We blog for a million different reasons, but in the end we’re all storytellers. Writing Challenges help you push your writing boundaries and explore new ideas, subjects, and styles.
To participate, read the challenge instructions and write at least one post in response. Tag your post with DPchallenge and include a link to this post to generate a pingback. Make sure your post has been specifically published in response to this challenge. We might just highlight some of our favorites on Freshly Pressed on Fridays, or in our quarterly newsletter.
Three times Three
Recently, Michelle wrote a great post on how to tell a story in three photographs. We loved the idea so much, we used it as the subject of the “threes” photo challenge. Today, we’re going to look at the idea of threes for a third time. (So cubist!) In this week’s writing challenge, you’ll write a post using three photographs for inspiration.
Your challenge, should you choose to accept it

Come and knock on our door! We’ve been waiting for you! Source (Public domain)
You can choose to write a post inspired by a response to the “Threes” photo challenge, or you can write your post based on three photos you supply.
Not sure how to get started? Here are some ideas to give your muse a friendly nudge:
- Choose one set of three photos below and write a fiction piece inspired by the photos. You might choose a photo subject as your main character or the location as the setting for your fiction.
- Write three haikus, one to represent each photograph in the set of photos you choose.
- Choose an object/location depicted in a photoset and write a reflective piece about that object/location. For extra inspiration on writing about objects, refer to Andrea Badgley‘s recent writing challenge, “Object.”
- Write about a memory inspired by either three of your own photographs or a memory sparked from a set of samples below.
There is no right way or wrong way to participate in the challenge — the object of the challenge is to get you writing and to have a bit of fun.
Visual Inspiration
Here is just a small sample of the amazing responses to the “threes” photo challenge to choose from.
Very important: if you choose to use any of these photographs in your post, you must credit the photographer. THIS MEANS YOU. Please feel welcome to copy and paste the photo credits below.

Hi, I linked my post up to this post, so my page has appeared on the list of pingbacks. Now this may be a stupid question, but I’ve noticed that other bloggers are able to recreate this list of pingbacks within their posts. How do I do that? I’d like to link to other people’s posts as well as to this one, but I just don’t know how. Thanks for your help. I’m kind of a blogging neophyte…

Someone will tell you, I would think. But if you have interest in other input … these lists of pingbacks are damnable! There’s no justification for them, as you’re putting a link to this site within your post, anyway, and are therefore ALREADY LINKED TO EVERY OTHER POST! The blogosphere doesn’t need 3,581 times all these URLs accreting away like anything thoughout its innards, believe me. They’re only an excuse for making people increase other people’s hits – and that’s … sad.

Fair enough. I was just feeling bad for not doing it since everyone else was. Thanks for your input 🙂

No, not at all. It actually made me feel a bit better. I’m new to blogging and always sensitive to accidentally failing to follow some unwritten etiquette. So it’s nice to know I wasn’t upsetting anyone by not doing it. Plus, I hate not knowing HOW to do something, even if I don’t choose to do it. 🙂

I totally agree with you M.R. There’s no need for bloggers to be linking to every other blog post in posts like The Weekly Photo Challenge. Most of the bloggers that do this, doesn’t even visit and comment in the other posts – they just add links there so that they get their stats up on their post.
Spamming is the technical term for it.

Hi @OMMommy,
Thanks for putting a pingback in your post — there’s no need to create a list to all the other bloggers’ submisssions. Some bloggers do this, though there is no requirement. If you’d like to know how to do this, let me know. I can share how to do this via email.
Happy blogging!

Jessie, the pictures are absolutely beautiful. I do apologise if it is a bit of ‘gloomy’ post for those lovely pictures. Memories were triggered when I saw them pictures and hope you don’t mind me using the pictures for this.

With dead week looming, I don’t think I’ll have time to participate in this weekly challenge, but thank you for the tip! Seems like an exciting and different approach to the blogging niche I seem to have fallen into. I look forward to attempting this as soon as I have some down time!

Fun challenge, Krista. Thanks so much for the idea.
I suspect some of you will get a laugh out of this post, part of which addresses “TOILET TRAINING” for North Americans living as expats in the developing world. I’ve included the 3 photos that inspired the piece, as well as a cartoon, for good measure. Hope you enjoy.
