We blog for a million reasons, but in the end we’re all storytellers. Our writing challenges help you push your writing boundaries and explore new ideas, subjects, and writing styles.
To participate, tag your post with DPchallenge and include a link to this post to generate a pingback. Please make sure your post has been specifically written in response to this challenge. We might just highlight some of our favorites on Freshly Pressed on Friday, or in our monthly newsletter.
In the past, we’ve loved reading your stories inspired from our “1,000 Words” challenges. Today, let’s revisit this challenge — and this time, you have several inspiration images to choose from:
For this week’s challenge, use one of the images in this gallery as a starting point for a short story, poem, free-write, or musing on whatever you’d like. The one-word captions — from contemplation to emptiness — are things I personally think about when I view these images. But photography triggers different ideas and emotions in all of us, given our varied paths and perspectives. In the image of the man looking out into the sea, I may think he’s contemplating in peace and enjoying the view, but you might wonder what he’s staring at. What troubles he may have. Or, if someone is watching him from behind.
I have my own narratives for these pictures; I’m curious to see how you use them to conjure your own. To clarify, you don’t need to write 1,000 words for your submission (although I won’t stop you if you do!). While the challenge calls for you to pick just one image, you’re welcome to experiment with more than one, if you’re so inspired.
Feel free to upload and insert any of my images in your own posts:
(For more information on adding a credit to an image, see this post on sourcing and attributing photos.)
Happy writing!
Those arches inspired me to write The Dark Just on the Other Side of the Light today. Thank you for prompting me to think and write about something I tend not to appreciate as much as I do now.

Hey! I really enjoyed this challenge. (:
I chose the picture for “Contemplation,” but saw loneliness (hence the title to my poem). I hope everyone who reads enjoys! (:

due to the recent snow/ice storm that clobbered the East coast, i lost all cable/internet/phone service for over 24hrs. i couldn’t even do my homework since it was stored online. i did remember the pic from the Challenge though. so from memory, i created my tale. odd what the mind does when the distractions slip away…
