We blog for a million reasons, but in the end we’re all storytellers. Our writing challenges help you push your writing boundaries and explore new ideas, subjects, and writing styles.
To participate, tag your post with DPchallenge and include a link to this post to generate a pingback. Please make sure your post has been specifically written in response to this challenge. We might just highlight some of our favorites on Freshly Pressed on Friday, or in our monthly newsletter.
In the past, we’ve loved reading your stories inspired from our “1,000 Words” challenges. Today, let’s revisit this challenge — and this time, you have several inspiration images to choose from:
For this week’s challenge, use one of the images in this gallery as a starting point for a short story, poem, free-write, or musing on whatever you’d like. The one-word captions — from contemplation to emptiness — are things I personally think about when I view these images. But photography triggers different ideas and emotions in all of us, given our varied paths and perspectives. In the image of the man looking out into the sea, I may think he’s contemplating in peace and enjoying the view, but you might wonder what he’s staring at. What troubles he may have. Or, if someone is watching him from behind.
I have my own narratives for these pictures; I’m curious to see how you use them to conjure your own. To clarify, you don’t need to write 1,000 words for your submission (although I won’t stop you if you do!). While the challenge calls for you to pick just one image, you’re welcome to experiment with more than one, if you’re so inspired.
Feel free to upload and insert any of my images in your own posts:
(For more information on adding a credit to an image, see this post on sourcing and attributing photos.)
Happy writing!
I know you had to choose one out of a given set of pictures and write a 1000 words on it. I did, just not all of them ! I am learning that the written word is just as powerful as those that remain unsaid. One often wants to say a lot more, but needs to say a lot less. I needed 140… You?

This is my first try at participation in these weekly writing challenge… and almost my first try at blogging, so I hope I am doing this correctly. I chose emptiness, in more ways than one 🙂

I actually combined the previous week ” Leave your shoes at the door” and this week’s ” 1,000 words” to generate this story of mine. http://creamcolouredreindeers.wordpress.com/wp-admin/post.php?post=622&action=edit&message=6&postpost=v2

Hola, qué tal a todos, he aquí lo mío, espero disfruten o al menos, no resulte tan

When is the deadline for this challenge?

While we go through each week’s challenge submissions and occasionally share standouts on Fridays (on Freshly Pressed), there really is no hard deadline for this — or any of our writing challenges. They’re meant to be prompts to get your going, whatever day it is.

I was inspired by the “emptiness” picture, although the story ended up taking on a life of its own!
