What do you love about where you live? Show us!
Recently, I was chatting with a friend about a trip he’d taken. He’d briefly visited a warm destination from our cold city, escaping the deep pit of Winnipeg’s long winter. He remarked that the first thing he couldn’t help but notice was the volumes of tourists we don’t see here.
Despite the fact that we don’t attract many visitors, there’s still plenty of interesting places and beauty in my town, although you might have to look a little harder to find it. I went deep into the archives of my camera phone to find these three images, ones that are special to me for various reasons.
On the left, in the back of the photo, is the J.H. Ashdown Warehouse. James Henry Ashdown, also known as the “merchant prince of Winnipeg,” literally helped build much of the city. He bought the land for the warehouse in 1870, and turned it into a thriving hardware business. Today, you can actually live in his legacy, in one of the building’s lofts.
In the center is this huge, beautiful tree I pass on my runs through Assiniboine Park. I happened to catch it at the halfway point as it transitioned to fall color, just a day before the first lasting snow of the season.
On the right is my favorite, if slightly melancholy shot of Main Street and Bannatyne Avenue, looking south. I can still hear the adhesive sound of the car tires on the wet road that day.
And now, over to you. Share with us an image, or two, or three, (or more!) of where you live. For bonus points, tell us what it is about the photo(s) that you love. I can’t wait to go on a fantastic virtual tour of the world, courtesy of photo challenge participants. Away we go!

That was a nice mini tour.. The three pictures you posted and all the dots to connect in between. My city – though there have been many in the recent past- is special in many ways. Not just because it is one of the best cities to live in the world, but it is also my home now. Chicago through my eyes./ iPhone 🙂

Enjoyed your tour of Winnipeg, a city we frequented many times in our years as newlyweds.
Saskatoon’s our city, so of course the Bessborough Hotel, the Bridges, lots of contenders for third.

I hear so many great things about Saskatoon! It’s at the top of my “must visit” list.

I believe that all places, wherever you live, have something that can appeal to those who never been there. An interesting theme and a very nice presentation from where you live Krista. I really like the big tree in contrast to the street scene.
Now I’ll consider what Malta has as I want to show, here are so much… 📷

The turkey parade is in front of my house most days right now. It seems to be mating seasons. Stay tuned for chicks.

Well, Krista, I guess we all love at least something of our place in the world. A tree or a street, a special house or park. This is an interesting challenge – as usual.

Krista, I knew less than nothing about Winnipeg and enjoyed the photos. Now I’m very curious about the street names you mention — are they all First People names? Is there a French influence? Scottish?
LikeLiked by 1 person
Hi Ellen,
Thanks so much for your kind words! Street names are a real mix. We have the largest French-speaking community outside of Quebec as well as many founding families who were of European descent so it’s common in the downtown area to have street names that were the last name of prominent family, such as Bannatyne, named after a fur trader and merchant born in South Ronaldsay, Orkney Islands. There is Tecumseh Street, named for indigenous warrior Tecumseh (1768-1813) who fought on behalf of British forces during the War of 1812.
