The Road Taken

Show us something that surprised or delighted you on “the road taken.”

I was born and raised on the Canadian prairie, a place where the land is flat and the horizon is long, a place where you can see the approaching weather far in advance. All my life, I’ve lived in a place where blue sky touches the snow in winter and the plains of grass in the summer. This is probably why I’m fascinated with mountains.

I had the chance to spend a week in Whistler, British Columbia, last fall. We enjoyed warm sunshine and soft rain. One early morning, a friend and I took a walk before breakfast, meandering on a gorgeous forest trail amid huge coniferous trees. As we rounded a gentle curve, I was stunned to see the mountain rise up to the clouds before us. I had to halt the conversation to record the mountain in all its majesty. It was a wonderful surprise I won’t forget.

For this week’s challenge, show us something that surprised you on “the road taken.” It could be a heritage building in your city or town as seen from a new-to-you angle, a yummy meal on a road trip detour, or the penny you found on a casual stroll. (I still love to find pennies — always a small thrill!) This challenge is wide open — show us the excitement, surprise, wonder, or amazement of your “road taken.”

  1. What beautiful pictures! I, too, have grown up in flat prairie land and long for the mountains. While the hot summer sun shining down on the corn fields of southwestern Missouri can be pretty, I would rather be hiking a trail surrounded by trees.
One of my favorite places is at a girl scout camp I attended as a child. I go back every year for camp staff reunion weekend, and always hike the trails there. It’s my “happy place”….
