I was born and raised on the Canadian prairie, a place where the land is flat and the horizon is long, a place where you can see the approaching weather far in advance. All my life, I’ve lived in a place where blue sky touches the snow in winter and the plains of grass in the summer. This is probably why I’m fascinated with mountains.

I had the chance to spend a week in Whistler, British Columbia, last fall. We enjoyed warm sunshine and soft rain. One early morning, a friend and I took a walk before breakfast, meandering on a gorgeous forest trail amid huge coniferous trees. As we rounded a gentle curve, I was stunned to see the mountain rise up to the clouds before us. I had to halt the conversation to record the mountain in all its majesty. It was a wonderful surprise I won’t forget.

For this week’s challenge, show us something that surprised you on “the road taken.” It could be a heritage building in your city or town as seen from a new-to-you angle, a yummy meal on a road trip detour, or the penny you found on a casual stroll. (I still love to find pennies — always a small thrill!) This challenge is wide open — show us the excitement, surprise, wonder, or amazement of your “road taken.”

  1. Your opening about the prairies took me back to the summer of ’92 when my husband and I traveled for four months all over Canada (and into Alaska) in our 1975 VW van with a pop-up sleeping area. We camped on the edge of a huge prairie field one night and were surprised to watch the moon rise in the east as the sun set in the west. The huge sky was glorious with the two orbs on the opposing horizons and something new to us as we hale from the east. This memory continues to surprise me because it remains vivid, even after all of this time.
