This week’s photo challenge is guest hosted by Anne Ditmeyer of Pret a Voyager (Ready to Travel). Read on for more about this week’s theme, Simple, and her photography tips!
When I got my iPhone I never imagined how much I’d use it, especially to take pictures. I think there’s something about always having it on me, and at my finger tips that encourages photography of “the mundane.” Sometimes it’s the simplest things that make the best pictures.
As a graphic designer I’ve always been drawn to typography. When I used to work for architects I was always photographing cool signs for inspiration for projects. When I travel, from time to time I’d take picture of store hour signs so I could remember to come back when they were actually open.
This summer in Paris a different kind of signage started to attract my eye: the closed in August signs. Taking holiday in France is very much a tradition, and I was constantly amused by the signs I saw, and how omni-present (and handmade) they were. It started to becoming a game for myself to document them as I passed them. Then I posted them on my blog. I had no idea what a great response I’d get, so I followed up with another post with more signs. I loved the way the way something as simple as a boring sign was able to engage readers. It just went to prove that you need not photograph something earth shattering to capture someone’s attention.

New to The Daily Post? Whether you’re a beginner or a professional, you’re invited to get involved in our Weekly Photo Challenge to help you meet your blogging goals and give you another way to take part in Post a Day / Post a Week. Everyone is welcome to participate, even if your blog isn’t about photography.
Here’s how the weekly photo challenge works:
1. Each week, we’ll provide a theme for creative inspiration. You take photographs based on your interpretation of the theme, and post them on your blog anytime before the following Friday when the next photo theme will be announced.
2. To make it easy for others to check out your photos, title your blog post “Weekly Photo Challenge: (theme of the week)” and be sure to use a “postaday2011″ or “postaweek2011″ tag.
3. Subscribe to The Daily Post so that you don’t miss out on weekly challenge announcements. Sign up via the email subscription link in the sidebar or RSS.

I feel blessed today to read of your description “photography of “the mundane.” . I often just end up explaining that my camera… I haven’t figured how to get my photos off my phone yet…sigh…is my “memory”
and easier to have the photo to read than a piece of paper I’d loose.
I, like you, take photos of signs, store hours, menus, …
As I said, a blessing to find you. I never thought of it as being “drawn to typography” but you have it stated perfectly.
Will see what I have done in the past few days…always something !
Peace,
Siggi in Downeast Maine.
