Last fall, the Moving Image Contemporary Art Fair in London, England, featured the National #Selfie Portrait Gallery — one of the first major exhibitions focused on the art of the self-portrait, or selfie. Depending on your view, perhaps art isn’t the most fitting term, but whether you love it or hate it, selfie-portraiture is indeed a thing, and an expression of our ever-evolving culture in our digital age.

For this challenge, snap a selfie with your cameraphone or camera. In the shot above, I captured my reflection on the surface of an Arnaldo Pomodoro sculpture at Trinity College in Dublin, Ireland. Feel free to get creative and clever, and if you don’t want to share a photo of yourself, think of a way to approach this challenge in a different way. (Hint: silhouettes and shadows are your friends.)

A selfie doesn’t have to be all about you; it can reveal much more, given the elements you choose to include.

In a new post created specifically for this challenge, share a selfie.

New to The Daily Post? Whether you’re a beginner or a professional, you’re invited to get involved in our Weekly Photo Challenge to help you meet your blogging goals and give you another way to take part in Post a Day / Post a Week. Everyone is welcome to participate, even if your blog isn’t about photography.

Here’s how it works:

  1. Each week, we’ll provide a theme for creative inspiration. You take photographs based on your interpretation of the theme, and post them on your blog (a new post!) anytime before the following Friday when the next photo theme will be announced.
  2. To make it easy for others to check out your photos, title your blog post “Weekly Photo Challenge: (theme of the week)” and be sure to use the “postaday″ tag.
  3. Follow The Daily Post so that you don’t miss out on weekly challenge announcements, and subscribe to our newsletter — we’ll highlight great photos from each month’s most popular challenge.

  1. Cheri – that sculpture from Dublin is very interesting – and this is a fun selfie. I have never once taken a good selfie– and so I am curious to see if this challenge will have good results – what a fun topic. :)

  2. In 1992 or thereabouts, I submitted five photo self-portraits to a faculty art exhibit in Lynn, MA. Then, as now, I couldn’t resist touting my own selfie horn. Apologies. A dear friend at the time took a selfie a -day for the year and had them printed as a single continuous roll. Brilliant.

  3. 4. I have done some things that i ain’t proud of. I paid for it when the others should have. Actually it would be a great history lesson for your class, I wrote a book once, or actually I wrote several. Stamped and filed, then returned. I actually wrotte a master piece. Check it outif you want to see just how people will be inhumane. I bet it took me about two and a half years to finish it. Awsome read, 2006, gotta love it.

  5. Check out this new cool Selfie app – CamMe. It lets you take pictures from a distance without even touching the device :)
