Where do you belong? In the hustle and bustle of a big city or amongst friendly faces in a small town? For this week’s challenge, show us your place in the world.
Ever since I was a little kid, when my mother and I would visit New York, she’d announce, “This is the best city in the world.” That’s how she instilled in me her passion for that famous island. No matter how many other places I visit or how long I’m away for, I always feel an energetic sense of magic when I cross over the Hudson River.
The reason we both feel New York is such a powerful place is because of its grandeur. The buildings are big, the streets are packed, and there’s always a crowd of people. With so many individuals on one small island, there’s always an exciting exchange of ideas going on. Scurrying in between the tall buildings, I always feel so small, but full of possibility.

Feeling both big and small in New York’s metropolis.
All cities — especially the big ones — have a way of reminding you of your place in the world. You know those graphs that always show where human beings fall in the history of the universe? It’s a bit like that. There’s a gigantic world out there and while you can feel disheartened by being just one small dot on the planet, so to speak, it’s also a source of hope and opportunity.
For this week’s photo challenge, explore what it means to find your place in the world. Where’s your safe space? Where do you go when you need to feel inspired or cheered up? Do you prefer to feel cozy and comforted in a smaller town or do you thrive on the buzz of a big city? If landscapes aren’t your thing, you can even explore portraits by playing with scale or fashion.
Let loose and give us a glimpse of who you are in the grand scheme of things.

Nice. I wrote a poetic-memoir where part of it reflects on living On that Island as you say. Your piece started out reminding me of my poetic-memoir. Thanks for your post.

My place in the world is wherever God happens to lead me. Now, the place where I want to be is either, back home in West Virginia in the 50s or some place like it. Since practically nothing is ever the same again, I make my place wherever I am, but my choice place is the picture I painted on my fb page.

Ha ha. I live in England about 30 miles outside of London. Surrounded by countryside. Once working with a couple of New Yorkers I declared my habit of avoiding London as it was to my mind dirty and smelly. They were horrified as they considered London to be clean in comparison to New York. However, I spent my childhood summers with my Grandparents in the far North of England (close to Scotland) surrounded by heather clad hills only occupied by sheep, playing in the clear pure waters of the river. Although my home was in an industrial town I have always lived within walking distance of countryside

Love New York though I’ve not been there. Always wanted to go, especially since taking tours via “Cash Cab” TV show. Such variety of people and businesses, something rural America lacks these days, though I love small towns too, and want to see them revitalized. The sense of belonging is defined by many factors, and not necessarily confined to just one place. You can feel a bond with the village you grew up in, the people you love, the city you feel at home… But sometimes you stumble upon a place by sheer coincidence, and you are inexplicably drawn to it – without any previous bonds or logic. It just presents itself, and you feel a sense of belonging. My place is called Heimaey – the Home Island of Vestmannaeyjar. I saw its mysterious shapes on the horizon, and it was as if there’s an unexplained energy emanating out of it. I just had to go there. It’s an incredibly beautiful place. I’ve already written a blog about it, but I wanted to share it with you nevertheless 😉 Vestmannaeyjar – Where the heart beats: https://wildernesscoffee-naturalhigh.com/vestmannaeyjar-thar-sem-hjartad-slaer/

I feel the same way! I’m from St. Louis, which is not exactly a small town, but it’s no Manhattan. I was born in a small town though, and Manhattan seemed like such a magical place. The first time I stepped into Times Square and saw all of the lights, my heart jumped and my breath caught in my throat. It was absolutely beautiful and so thrilling to be in such a magnificent place. It may not be that way all the time or to everyone, but to me it was more than anything I had ever dreamed of.
