A juxtaposition is “the act of placing things side by side, especially for the purpose of comparison or contrast” — as in this shot. While visiting Toul Sleng Prison in Cambodia, I was struck by the brilliant blue sky and palm trees swaying in the tropical breeze just beyond the barbed wire encircling the building. I had to capture it.

Of course, a juxtaposition doesn’t have to be serious. I snapped a shot of this non-plussed pup at a pet parade in my hometown:

Juxtapositions are all around us. Maybe there’s one bright yellow flower in your vase of pink daisies, or you have a shot of your kids, one smiling, one making a face. Maybe you spied a vintage car parked outside a sleek, modern building, or a new car in front of a run-down house — or one of a thousand other things you wouldn’t think of until you see it.

This week, in a post created specifically for this challenge, share a photo showing JUXTAPOSITION.

Whether you’re a beginner or a professional, you’re invited to get involved in our Weekly Photo Challenge to help you meet your blogging goals and give you another way to take part in Post a Day / Post a Week. Everyone is welcome to participate, even if your blog isn’t about photography.

Here’s how it works:

  2. To make it easy for others to check out your photos, title your blog post “Weekly Photo Challenge: (theme of the week)” and be sure to use the “postaday″ tag.
  3. Follow The Daily Post so that you don’t miss out on weekly challenge announcements, and subscribe to our newsletter — we’ll highlight great photos from each month’s most popular challenge.

  1. It was an early morning around 7:00 AM. My alarm rang and I thought it is still early or wrong alarm has been set but to my surprise everything was alright.

I expected a bright sunshine rather than it was opposite. It was the fog. We have never witnessed such fog where we could not see beyond a nearby road.

Having said that, it was the beautiful scene we have ever seen in last twenty years.

Same here, guys — i fell asleep at 1am (Manila time), woke five hours later — checked my sites and found that the Weekly Photo Challenge: Juxtaposition … is exactly what i put together 14 hours ago in the blog when i juxtaposed 12 photos of my students in action at the police station — in contrasting states of glee and anxiety :) … in a gallery …
