At Discover, I recently asked Divyakshi Gupta — a photographer and traveler based in Mumbai — about her obsession with doors:

I often think doors are veils to homes. Each have a distinct character, speaking volumes of the people living behind the door. It’s fun to guess what could possibly be behind a door — an array of secrets, emotions, and mysteries. A home with laughter, heartaches, hopes, banter, and more.

Behind every door is a story, says Divyakshi. I love this thought: that any door you encounter — while walking through your neighborhood or exploring a new place — can lead to a story, an opportunity, or a glimpse into another’s life.

For this Discover Challenge, let’s focus on a door. You’re free to interpret this challenge as you see fit, and respond in any genre or medium, as long as a door — real or imagined — is your primary inspiration. Ideas:

  • Memoirists and nonfiction writers: Tell us about the time you were hesitant to physically enter a building. Share a story about the childhood home you miss. Describe a day when you felt, symbolically, that a door to something new opened, or a door to your past closed.
  • Short story and fiction writers: Creatively use a door as the main setting of your story. Personify a door in your tale.
  • Poets: Write a haiku or sonnet — or your preferred poetic form — about a door, or entering or exiting a place or phase in your life.
  • Photographers: Get inspired by the doors of India captured by Divyakshi or these doors I’ve photographed on my travels, then get outside and capture your own.
  • Artists: Draw a door you’ve encountered while out on a walk, illustrate a door in your own home, or sketch a doorway during a museum visit.

For this challenge, the door is wide open. We look forward to your submissions and interpretations!

  1. When I was young the back door was always open to friends and family. Our neighborhood was filled with children and mother’s who would sit for hours drinking coffee on Saturday morning. There was always somebody at our back door stopping by to borrow a cup of sugar, chat about issues going on or just to play a game of cribbage. Nothing fancy about the door but it was never locked. I miss those days!

  2. I was thinking more about the door to our heart. How we open the door of our heart to God or to people. You are right, behind each door there is a story. And behind each door of one’s heart is a story of one’s life.

      1. Hey, thanks for taking out your valuable time to reply to my comment. I started a post to write about doors but it eventually turned out to be about a soldier! I have an idea in mind of penning down emotions hiding behind doors and I’m looking forward to it! 🙂

      1. I also started a post to write about doors but it eventually turned out to be about a soldier. Though it has an outside reference to a door but not really about it!

  4. Hey I thought I was the only one who noticed the subconscious affect that doors have on us humans. This is a great post. Thank you for being like me…sorta. 😆👍

  5. Isn’t it interesting that on Friday, I started preparing for a challenge on my WP blog titled Intuitive Poetry Writing. It began on Monday. A door is included in the exercises.

    Perhaps, synchronicity.

  6. Happening right now, shot an hour ago:
    Door to the future…
Rehearsal and sound check of the commencement exercises of the University of the Philippines on a beautiful morning outdoors at the amphitheatre, a canopy of giant wings in flight in emerald green, sunflower yellow, sunrise orange, forming a doorway above the stage — see for yourself at:

  7. I love doors and the meaning they carry with them. Behind each door are people with different stories and the opportunity to meet them.

  8. It resembles the story a person has in his life which he wants to open up but unable to open up because he doesn’t want to ruin it again and he isn’t confident to whom should he trust
