Where WordPress bloggers support each other with feedback and advice.
Happy new year! Welcome to the first 2018 edition of the Community Pool. Let’s keep this forum a welcoming, friendly, and productive space — thank you for reading (or re-reading) and respecting our guidelines below. Here’s to another fantastic year of blogging and online camaraderie.
Have you just published a new post and are dying for some feedback? Are you redesigning your blog and could use some layout or design advice from your more seasoned peers?
The Community Pool is for peer feedback and advice. Looking for more specific information? Check out some of these resources:
- Learn, a series of step-by-step tutorials for those just starting out.
- All our posts on building an audience and growing your traffic.
- If you’re stuck for inspiration, here are our Daily Prompts and other ideas for writing topics.
- A roundup of posts on blogging etiquette.
Tap into the wisdom of The Daily Post blogging community and leave your question here in the comments. Others can then click through and offer input either on your site, or in the comments here (feel free to indicate which you’d prefer).
Looking for more information about custom domains, advanced design options, and other enhancements for your blog? Find the WordPress.com plan that’s right for you.
Are you a new blogger looking to share your very first post? We have a special forum for bloggers just like you in our weekly First Friday posts.
To help us make the Community Pool a productive space for discussion, here are some tips and guidelines you might find useful:
- While you’re not required to, we encourage everyone who requests feedback to also reply to at least one or two other bloggers who need some help. Spread the love!
- The Community Pool comments section can get quite big — and starting duplicate threads doesn’t help. Thanks for not posting the same question more than once, as well as for not starting numerous threads in a single Pool.
- If you’re looking for quality feedback, be as specific as you can. Questions about a particular post tend to draw more comments than ones about entire blogs. Questions about specific design elements are more likely to be answered than ones asking for general layout advice.
- We discourage leaving links without a more substantive message or question. These are often overlooked by other bloggers, and we frequently remove them to make the comment reading experience smoother. Also note that including multiple links in your comment might automatically put it in the moderation queue, which will delay its publication.
- Please keep all comments civil and constructive. The idea is to have fun — it’s a pool, after all!
- To keep from losing your place in the comment thread while you visit others’ blogs, right-click on a link to open it in a new tab or window.
- If you haven’t looked at our Commenting Guidelines in a while, now might be a good time.
- No running on the deck.

Hello everybody, Simon from To Cut a Short Story Short here. Firstly a Very Happy New Year to one and all, and I hope 2018 will be a year in which you can achieve some of your own worthwhile writing goals.
I’m reposting one of my most popular posts ever, New Year’s Eve Ritual. The ritual could actually be done at any time but New Year seems like a pretty good time. I hope you enjoy it and maybe will be inspired to try it for yourself.

I can’t see a follow button Simon!!
LikeLiked by 3 people
In the main sidebar on the right there is a list of the posts published in the last 10 weeks. Below that there are pictures of my top 10 posts. *Directly below that* there is a blue ‘follow’ button, then a picture grid of follower Gravatars. Click on the blue button and you can subscribe to my blog.
If you don’t see the blue button it may be that your browser isn’t loading the page properly. I often find it doesn’t load my fonts, even though the page isn’t showing any error indication. By refreshing the page they are then shown correctly. If refreshing the page doesn’t work, restart your browser/reboot your computer/try a different browser/try a different computer. I’ve had a few follows in the last couple of hours so they must be seeing it OK. Good luck!

Great review. Seems like an interesting book.

The book seems great, right up my street and I will definitely read it. My only concern was, do you mean “It is the story of their BLACK mother, Leonie and her white husband, Michael…” the word you have used maybe frequently used in the book, but it is a racially offensive term outside of this context.
Good job otherwise
LikeLiked by 7 people
Racism is one of themes of the book. And it is depicted through the marriage of a nigger with a white man.
LikeLiked by 2 people
Yes but I don’t understand why you are using the word nigger if not as part of a quote? It is a contemptuous word for a black person see: https://en.oxforddictionaries.com/definition/nigger
LikeLiked by 3 people
Agreed. I know it is a contemptuous word. But we don’t have any other word. And I don’t intend to offend anyone.
LikeLike
I am sure you don’t want to offend, so I am saying that in that case, you should replace that word with the word nigger with the word “black” or “African-American” unless you are quoting directly from the book. As it is it is likely to cause many people offence – I am just helping you out because it is a good review!

I understand you’ve used the n-word out of ignorance. However, it’s kind of a profanity. To throw some further light on it, let’s say you don’t call all people from the sub-continent “p**i”, do you? The correct word should be “black” or “African-American” or “Caribbean”.

On the topic of using the word nigger. As a black woman, I read the post and understood the context in which you were using it. If racism is a theme in the book anyone who reads your review should be prepared to come across it. As black people we understand that racism was /is something that happens in the world and we’re not triggered if you mean nothing offensive by it. There are much bigger issues to be dealt with than a bloggers use of the word nigger in a blog post about a book that contains racism. Keep writing

A big thank you to everyone in this conversation for expressing yourselves with so much civility and open-mindedness. As a moderator, I’d normally remove mentions of words that are considered pejorative and/or offensive, especially those that target specific groups and communities. In this case, the context — which is about commenters who are more familiar with the North American connotation of the word explaining its potential to offend to someone from a different, non-U.S. background — I’ll keep it here for future reference. It’s a real testament to the power of this community that a tough topic could be broached with respect, empathy, and clarity.

I think direction is something only you can figure out. You have to like what you write and have a plan of sorts, even if that plan is to write on a variety of topics. When you identify that, I suggest editing your About page and fixing your drop-down menu so it’s not as repetitive.
Happy Blogging!

I really like your writing style. I just read your short Thrones post and it had me laughing, you’re very right. To me titles seemed fine, and I think taglines could work really well, I would just try to refine them. I think your layout is good too, only thing is that there seems to be kind of a lot going on if that makes sense. I’d suggest trying to pick images that are going to be clearer and distinguish your posts on your page.

Hi, nice little blog, maybe thinking about using pictures for the blogs to grab peoples attention, many people are drawn by visuals and if they see something they like they are more likely to read what you have written. Also one slight thing I found difficult was the background to your tag line, it really detracts from the words and if you wanted it to stand out, that background isn’t helping it. Keep up the good work though 😊

One suggestion you may want to think about is changing your background color. Right now you have an all white page and you might like it better if you had a colored border. Go to Themes in your left-hand sidebar, hit customize, and one of the options given in the new side bar is Colors & Backgrounds.
This is a free feature and you have an unlimited spectrum from which to choose. Experiment. See what you like, what matches your header. Hit Save if you like the changes, or click back to Home Page and your experiment will disappear.

Happy New year to you all!
I have just posted for the first time.
I’m hoping that my blog, and reading others with encourage me to achieve all I want this year by documenting it.
It’s been a tough couple of years, but I have a very positive outlook on life and hope to share that with others. I’ll be sure to have a read of others blogs.

Hi everyone! This morning I tried to come up with a New Year’s blessing for writers. I’d appreciate it if you’d have a look and tell me whether this one sounds okay or what I should change. Or maybe it sounds altogether too silly? Thanks much.

Thank you! I had to wipe out the “Home” page and learn how to put Categories into the Main Menu under the Header, but I’m pleased with the results.
I wanted people to come right to my latest post rather than a Home page with snippets of all, but then I had to install a Recent posts widget to compensate. All these little tricks gave me the look I want. đŸ™‚

I agree with “youngmeetsfree” keep writing and readers will come. Practice genuine reciprocity. Read and comment on other bloggers posts. Analyze the people in the Pool and see who is most likely to cohere to your style and invite them personally to check out your blog. Trust me the readers and the followers will come.

Hi, your writing style is great, but… you need to use capital letters at the start of your sentences and when you use the word I. Readers will come. Sometimes it takes a little while to get off the ground, but persevere and you’ll be rewarded 😊
