First Friday

New blogger? Welcome! Share a link to your first post, say hello to other new faces, and find your first few readers.

For other help:
If you’re not new and are looking for support or feedback, the Community Pool is the place for you!

For technical questions, visit the WordPress.com Support Forums.

To learn more about blogging, take a Blogging U. course.

To find, copy, and paste your link:
Head to your blog’s home page — not your dashboard, your blog itself. Click on the title of your post to open the individual post.

Highlight and copy the URL you see in your browser’s address bar, and paste the entire URL into a comment here.

Welcome to First Friday, a weekly open thread where any new blogger can share a link to his or her very first post with the larger WordPress.com community. To share your first post with us, copy and paste the link right into a comment here. If you’re not new, you can still be a part of First Fridays: visit a link or two, and leave the blogger a like or comment.

Please don’t use this as a space to share your first post…. that you published three years ago; ditto for simply sharing your latest post. Posts should have been published within the last month, and should be your first post. We’ll remove other posts to keep this space focused for new bloggers.

We ask that you help us keep this space focused by following a few additional guidelines:

  • We encourage anyone who shares a link to visit a few other bloggers. New readers for all!
  • When commenting, the third time is not the charm: don’t share the same link repeatedly, or in multiple First Friday threads. We’ll remove repeat posts.
  • Link directly to your new post, rather than to your blog generally — it makes it that much easier for folks to like the post or leave you comments.
  • Avoid repeated “Follow for a follow!” comments. (Tip: if you’re trying to build a readership, it’s much more effective to visit and comment on individual bloggers.)
  • To keep from losing your place while you visit others’ blogs, right-click on links to open them in a new tab or window.

    1. Taking a peek at your blog, you’ve got it set up nicely. Promise of interesting stories. You still need to do your first post so we have something to start on.

And then I’d recommend you go into your Settings. In the left hand pop-out bar you’ll see Widgets. Click on that. You’ll see an “Install new widget” button down at the bottom of the screen. Click on that, choose the option of a Follow this blog button and install it in your side bar. this makes it very easy for new readers to follow you.
There are a few other new widgets you might like to install as well, but start with this one. (My apologies if you already know all this.)

      1. I just checked again and there is no text on the post on your Home page, just a narrow picture of your throat. I suspect the image you used on your blog post has filled so much of it that there’s no room to display the rest. If you posted text, it isn’t visible or find-able.

On the other hand, posts don’t normally go on the Home page. That’s more a “greetings and a quick look at what I’ve written” page. Some of these new themes have a “page” called Blog and that’s where the actual posts go. You did go through ADD new Post, right — and not through ADD new Page?

      2. The picture that you’re talking about has a text in the left bottom corner, “RN, who?”, if you click on that, it brings up the post. Several others have gotten to it no problem! Are you on desktop, tablet or phone? I’ll look at each view, in case there’s one in particular that isn’t showing up well.

    2. Danika, I clicked on your link and went to this page https://nursedanika.blog/ It has a full screen pic of an operating room. When I click on the Home, About, and Contact links the screen changes slightly, but I go nowhere. Am I going to the wrong place?

      1. Hi! Maybe I need to set up my page a little different! When you open my page with the link above, I have my first post featured on that page. It’s titled “RN Who?” and has a picture of myself in scrubs with a stethoscope. You can click on that title and it will pull up the post. Let me know if that doesn’t work!!

  1. Hello Fellow Bloggers!
I am new here to WordPress, although I did open an account months ago for school; I only wrote on it for a couple of assignments and then quit. I have started a new blog and I hope to get some sound advice from some experienced bloggers. My blog is still finding itself, and doesn’t have a category yet, but I’m sure it will probably end up being some type of travel blog. I’ve read over and over that the best way to be a writer is to write, so I am writing! I hope you find something you enjoy on my blog! Thank you for reading it!

    1. Welcome to the blogging community!! I like the simplicity of your layout. 🙂 it’s easy on the eye. May I suggest a little easier navigation for your content? Right now it’s not an issue, but as you continue to post and share, it may benefit you to have a navigation tool. Only a thought. Thank you for sharing! I wish you all the best. 💫

I was given a second chance at life when I got a kidney transplant in April and I’m determined not to waste this precious gift. My instruction Manual focuses on my journey to be happier, healthier and more productive.

Here’s a link to my first post. Would love any thoughts or feedback, here or on the blog!

  5. Hi guys!
So I’ve pretty much been blogging for 2 weeks now and my blog is doing incredibly well. I’ve been able to move to a self-hosted site and build a following that enjoy my work. The post that kickstarted all this is probably my most emotive post to date, it resonates with a lot of people and may also resonate with you on a personal level. Please enjoy it and reflect on yourself as you read it, I’ve written it so it’s not too long 🙂
