First Friday

New blogger? Welcome! Share a link to your first post, say hello to other new faces, and find your first few readers.

For other help:
If you’re not new and are looking for support or feedback, the Community Pool is the place for you!

For technical questions, visit the WordPress.com Support Forums.

To learn more about blogging, take a Blogging U. course.

To find, copy, and paste your link:
Head to your blog’s home page — not your dashboard, your blog itself. Click on the title of your post to open the individual post.

Highlight and copy the URL you see in your browser’s address bar, and paste the entire URL into a comment here.

Welcome to First Friday, a weekly open thread where any new blogger can share a link to his or her very first post with the larger WordPress.com community. To share your first post with us, copy and paste the link right into a comment here. If you’re not new, you can still be a part of First Fridays: visit a link or two, and leave the blogger a like or comment.

Please don’t use this as a space to share your first post…. that you published three years ago; ditto for simply sharing your latest post. Posts should have been published within the last month, and should be your first post. We’ll remove other posts to keep this space focused for new bloggers.

We ask that you help us keep this space focused by following a few additional guidelines:

  • We encourage anyone who shares a link to visit a few other bloggers. New readers for all!
  • When commenting, the third time is not the charm: don’t share the same link repeatedly, or in multiple First Friday threads. We’ll remove repeat posts.
  • Link directly to your new post, rather than to your blog generally — it makes it that much easier for folks to like the post or leave you comments.
  • Avoid repeated “Follow for a follow!” comments. (Tip: if you’re trying to build a readership, it’s much more effective to visit and comment on individual bloggers.)
  • To keep from losing your place while you visit others’ blogs, right-click on links to open them in a new tab or window.

    1. Welcome to WP!

For me, writing is the most therapeutic thing I can do. I hope it becomes that for you as well, and it can be part of your daily inventory towards sobriety. Best wishes.

      1. Your initial posted link. It takes us directly to our own posting page. Next time, post your blog’s URL (its directly underneath “My Site”). It’s also the one included in my previous comment. 🙂

  1. Hello everyone, I’m not new to blogging, but I am completely new to WordPress. And I love this site better than other site I’ve tried. After blogging about politics, family, and current events, I’ve started this blog to explore my mind as a mid-lifer. Thanks in advance for any interest. I look forward to meeting some of you! 🙂 https://onbecomingmaria.blog/2017/04/19/blogging-anyway-discovering-the-joy-of-a-writing-life/

    2. Following. Your first post touched my heart. We’ve had different paths but I feel I can relate to a lot of what you wrote. I too ummed and ahhed about creating a blog. I do have a creative one on blogger but the content I wanted to write about didn’t tie in with it, so thought I’d give WordPress a go. Well done on your newest venture, I shall be sure to follow x

      1. Thank you so much for the lovely words 💜 yes, i guess thats important because many people think that controlling is something that is done out of love. Maybe there is, they are limiting us out of concern. But there is a limit to it too. It all comes with mutual respect. I guess i have been affected by it too much, its intimidating. Thats why i joined WP to build my confidence. Thank you so much for all the support.

      2. Well this is the perfect place to be then. Writing helps a lot with stress and issues weighing your mind down and this community is very friendly and supportive. I’m glad you’re a part of it 🙂

    2. Hello! Congrats on your first post and blog! It’s all very exciting but please don’t get discouraged because it takes time for readers and followers alike to ‘find’ you and to build up your readership. Keep writing, keep posting and have patience. It will eventually come together. Have a great week! 😊

    1. Welcome 🙂

I noticed that you still have some placeholder text in your blog’s sidebar, over on the right side — you can remove or edit that by going to My Site > Customize > Widgets. Look for the Text Widget!

      1. Ah, that’s something that’s much easier to do on the website than in the app. If you’re using the app, go to your site, then tap on “Dashboard,” which is the last option on that screen.

  2. Hi! I just started blogging two weeks ago after years of burdening my friends and family with long winded, bloggy type facebook posts about the joys of being a grandmother, mother, wife and nurse. I know nothing about blogging or creating a site, although I have given it a try. I would appreciate some honest feedback from you smart people! Thank you so much. http://www.spunkynoni.com/

    2. I loved your last post – reminded me of my Grandma! I couldn’t figure out how to like/comment your post, or follow your blog. So my main advice would be to make sure your blog is user friendly!

      1. Thank you, that is good advice. I will try to fix it but I’m still trying to figure out what widget is so this will be a challenge!

      1. Thank you so much for this. I appreciate it. I will need to take pictures more and figure out what goes best with what. I’ve never been so inclined as to do so. Thank you again.

    1. I’ve had a look at your blog. I can’t say I care for the flat grey colour with no header but perhaps the “dull” look is what you’re wanting. (Judging from your bi-line above.)

I’m happy to see you’ve installed a Recent Posts widget. It makes a blog much more user-friendly in my opinion, though I’d have put it in the side bar. I’d encourage you to install a Tag cloud. and do use categories and tags; this is how your posts get seen by other readers. Check out https://en.wordpress.com//tags/ for ideas.

And have posted six items already. One thing I’d say to any blogger. No more than two posts a day max. We are busy people. It’s too hard for readers to keep up with a slough of posts coming at them. I follow one blogger who posts over a dozen poems a day and I read one or two at the most. Write them and save them for the times you’re not so inspired.

      1. Tag cloud is definitely something I will have to learn more about. Yea, the flat grey needs to go. I was curious about how often people post. That makes perfect sense though. Thank you so much for giving me some awesome info. I really appreciate it.

      1. Thank you Ares. One day at a time indeed, although this evening it felt like “one hour at a time”. Cooking dinner without a glass in my hand and wine down my throat felt almost painful but once I got through eating dinner I was ok. Thanks again

    3. Raw, and upfront. I love it! I was this mom as well. 3 years and 8 months later. I lost a lot of years, but know by the Grace of God my fall has lifted me higher. Nothing I love more then truth without it we can’t come to the realization of self. I will keep reading, as my days were so much like yours. Keep em’ coming, and don’t look back!

      1. I am a pretty upfront and raw person in real life, just not about my alcoholism! So it is an immense relief to be able to type out these words, feelings and thoughts.

      2. I am the same way with mine, raw! I forwarnded my family it will not be for the faint of heart. They will be reliving what came to my arrest, and surrender of my life over to God to be free of the solace I found in a bottle. Stop by and take peak. It gets real raw, for death awaited me. All the better for it 3 years and 8 months later. I lost much to gain even more. Good luck in your venture. Keep on keeping on. For the bottle is no friend. For me it was just a mask, and numbing agent for my wounds in this life. Living in the clarity of freedom, and happiness. Daily sober, Lisa

Two things: First, I noticed that you still have some placeholder text in your blog’s sidebar — you can remove or edit that by going to My Site > Customize > Widgets. Look for the Text Widget! Second, you have a few extra posts without content that you’ll probably want to remove, and you can do that in My Site > Posts.

    1. One thing I noticed — you’re using a lot of tags and categories on some of your posts. The WordPress.com Reader actually filters out posts that use more than 15 tags and categories (combined) as an anti-spam measure, so using this many tags actually makes it harder for folks to find your posts, not easier.

      1. Thank you so much! I am all heart. Everthing I write is from the heart, I find it healing and draining all in one. I wear my heart on my sleeve. So this is quite an adventure. My passion comes from the hands of my gracious God who picked me up at my most feeble state. So weak I could barely lift my eyes. He came, and with His gentle hands lifted my chin so I could see all the Glory in His splendor waiting for me. Just a lost drunk girl, waiting for her King!! He rescued me, and I whole because of Him. Thank you, blessings. For Grace lives here…Lisa

      2. Did I forget to mention I have done all of this on my phone, yep my phone. Could not even tell you what it looks like from a desktop point of view. When I went back to school at 40, the writing was a breeze it was the formatting I stayed up all night to get right. This has been quite a fun experience. Learning my phone(future job with T-Mobile)….yeah right!! Anyways all from my phone I bleed my heart out on word press. Which I am so grateful for today’s avenues in which we can share, and multiple ways to share. 📚📝💭☺📖📱
