First Friday

New blogger? Welcome! Share a link to your first post, say hello to other new faces, and find your first few readers.

For other help:
If you’re not new and are looking for support or feedback, the Community Pool is the place for you!

For technical questions, visit the WordPress.com Support Forums.

To learn more about blogging, take a Blogging U. course.

To find, copy, and paste your link:
Head to your blog’s home page — not your dashboard, your blog itself. Click on the title of your post to open the individual post.

Highlight and copy the URL you see in your browser’s address bar, and paste the entire URL into a comment here.

Welcome to First Friday, a weekly open thread where any new blogger can share a link to his or her very first post with the larger WordPress.com community. To share your first post with us, copy and paste the link right into a comment here. If you’re not new, you can still be a part of First Fridays: visit a link or two, and leave the blogger a like or comment.

Please don’t use this as a space to share your first post…. that you published three years ago; ditto for simply sharing your latest post. Posts should have been published within the last month, and should be your first post. We’ll remove other posts to keep this space focused for new bloggers.

We ask that you help us keep this space focused by following a few additional guidelines:

  • We encourage anyone who shares a link to visit a few other bloggers. New readers for all!
  • When commenting, the third time is not the charm: don’t share the same link repeatedly, or in multiple First Friday threads. We’ll remove repeat posts.
  • Link directly to your new post, rather than to your blog generally — it makes it that much easier for folks to like the post or leave you comments.
  • Avoid repeated “Follow for a follow!” comments. (Tip: if you’re trying to build a readership, it’s much more effective to visit and comment on individual bloggers.)
  • To keep from losing your place while you visit others’ blogs, right-click on links to open them in a new tab or window.

    1. Hi, Happy Friday!! Your blog looks like it is still under construction. I see that you were asking for help on what to do. I know that wordpress has a tuturoial that can walk you through stuff like that. Other than that, you just have to play with it until you find what you like. There is a customize button on your dashboard, you can pick a layout there and start making changes page by page.

    1. Welcome 🙂

I noticed that you still have some placeholder text in your blog’s footer, at the bottom of your homepage — you can remove or edit that by going to My Site > Customize > Widgets. Look for the Text Widget!

    1. I like your blog! Looking forward to more writing from you! The layout is pretty good too. I personally don’t like the dark background with the white words, it is hard on my eyes. But I love the color scheme as a whole. Especially the blue and grey!

      1. Thanks you for going through my blog! I am also working towards a more ‘reading-compatible’ layout – hopefully will update that soon!

    1. Look like you’ve posted a link to your preview, which only you can see — make sure you share the link to the public, published post!

(If you’re not sure how to get the correct link, just ask 🙂 )

      Welcome!

  1. Hello everyone. I’m totally new at all of this, but I love to write. My blog is about my life as a fibromyalgia warrior. Trying to keep going and continue to live while dealing with every issue and pain from fibro. My address is ladyfibrowarrior.wordpress.com

    1. Your blog is pretty! You are off to a good start 🙂 Just a heads up, you have an unused widget on your side bar, not sure if you realize it is there or not. Also, you have two “first blog” posts. I don’t know if you meant to do that or were unsure how to delete the first one that you didn’t do on purpose, but you can do that from the dashboard where the “posts” are at. I’m still learning too, so hopefully that wasn’t confusing. I’m looking forward to seeing what all you do with it! It is lovely so far!

      1. People often use them as a space to share a little introduction/summary of themselves and their blog, but you can also just remove it entirely — up to you!

    1. Your blog is funny and your daughter is really beautiful! A couple of comments, when I go to your blog on the PC my entire screen is filled up with your pink print and I have to scroll down before I can read your blog. Was that intentional?
Also, I notice your categories are all very similar, dad, dadblog, dadblogger, fatherhood.
      Happy blogging!

      1. Are you confusing categories with tags? Categories group all your blogs into distinct grouping eg on my blog I have Life in UK and Life in Taiwan, talking about stuff in my two different life.

Tags on the other hand makes it easier to find your blog. eg If you tag your article with dadblog or dadblogger, anyone who searches for these words will hopefully find your article, sane as instagram and Twitter.

You have to assign none, one or more than one category to each blog, same for tags.

Sorry if I sound like Im teaching you to suck eggs, defo not my intention 😀

      2. This might help:

Tags help readers find your blog.
Categories help people already on your blog find specific things on your blog.

If you wrote a post about your favorite movies, you might give it the tag “movies” so people searching for posts about movies in the Reader can find you. Then, you might give it categories like “Comedy” and “Action” so the people already on your blog who are looking for specific kinds of posts can find it.

Some folks use both, some only use one or the other — it’s up to you.

        Make sense?

    1. I checked out your blog and I really enjoyed reading a couple of your posts! I have one small thought geared toward the visual aesthetic of your blog. I think you might hold more traffic through your page if it had a bit more color. The only colors on any of the main pages are black and white and there are no pictures. Maybe take a look at the “theme” you’re using for your blog under your settings. On my home page, I include the post’s featured image, just to give my home page a little visual appeal. Feel free to look at mine to see what I mean.

    1. Hi! I checked out your blog and I have a couple of thoughts for you!
      1. You need a profile picture so that when you comment on threads (like this one) we get a little bit of context (Mine is a pic of a journal). Without a profile picture, it just looks a little not-put-together and probably decreases traffic to your page a little. 🙂
      2. I like the idea for your blog- health blogs can be very helpful for a lot of people! I’m about to graduate with a degree in medicine, so I found your information very interesting!
      3. I think it would be beneficial to include an “About the author” page and explain a little bit of your credibility so people know you aren’t just making things up. Whether your credibility is a Ph.D or an avid health magazine reader- people want to know. Context adds to the content!

      1. Your post is beautiful. I absolutely agree with you that it’s high time we learn to live for others… We will have to learn to spread joy. It’s a necessity which we humanity fails to realise.
