First Friday

New blogger? Welcome! Share a link to your first post, say hello to other new faces, and find your first few readers.

For other help:
If you’re not new and are looking for support or feedback, the Community Pool is the place for you!

For technical questions, visit the WordPress.com Support Forums.

To learn more about blogging, take a Blogging U. course.

To find, copy, and paste your link:
Head to your blog’s home page — not your dashboard, your blog itself. Click on the title of your post to open the individual post.

Highlight and copy the URL you see in your browser’s address bar, and paste the entire URL into a comment here.

Welcome to First Friday, a weekly open thread where any new blogger can share a link to his or her very first post with the larger WordPress.com community. To share your first post with us, copy and paste the link right into a comment here. If you’re not new, you can still be a part of First Fridays: visit a link or two, and leave the blogger a like or comment.

Please don’t use this as a space to share your first post…. that you published three years ago; ditto for simply sharing your latest post. Posts should have been published within the last month, and should be your first post. We’ll remove other posts to keep this space focused for new bloggers.

We ask that you help us keep this space focused by following a few additional guidelines:

  • We encourage anyone who shares a link to visit a few other bloggers. New readers for all!
  • When commenting, the third time is not the charm: don’t share the same link repeatedly, or in multiple First Friday threads. We’ll remove repeat posts.
  • Link directly to your new post, rather than to your blog generally — it makes it that much easier for folks to like the post or leave you comments.
  • Avoid repeated “Follow for a follow!” comments. (Tip: if you’re trying to build a readership, it’s much more effective to visit and comment on individual bloggers.)
  • To keep from losing your place while you visit others’ blogs, right-click on links to open them in a new tab or window.

    1. Those are all great tips! And very well written I might add. Have you turned off comments and likes purposefully on your posts? You may want to allow readers the opportunity to give feedback. Just a thought. 🙂

    2. I really liked your post a lot. It reminded me of an adult school class I took called “Decluttering your life and reducing stress”. You covered a lot of helpful things.

Like the above poster said, I couldn’t find a comment field in your post. Not sure why. Do look into that or let us know how to find it. Getting comments in your blog is quite nice.

    3. Very useful tips, I probably should declutter myself 😀👍 I does seem like your missing a comment-section and likes, which you probably need if you want imput from readers. Sometimes life gets a little too decluttered 😉

    4. Wonderfully written! There’s a perfect balance between useful advice and emotion. Good clarity of thought as well. I enjoyed reading it! Can’t wait to see what else you come up with. Have a wonderful day! 🙂

    5. Good first post — and it reminds me of a “death by clutter” news article I read one time. Maybe I’ll do a pingback from my blog. (that’s where I give your link somewhere in my post so my readers can click on it and read your article if they want.)

      All the best.

    6. Like your post!! I am doing this whole decluttering-deep cleaning myself, it’s a challenge! Will try step 6, inviting friends and see what else is there that can be missed

    1. I liked how you took us on a journey of your thoughts during a special part of the day for you.

A lot of people have insomnia, so I think many can relate. Generally I don’t unless I get hypomanic/manic (I have bipolar disorder). But yes, when I experience mania it’s wonderful to have that extra time and I’m usually having so much fun. The night is a very romantic time of the day.

    2. Welcome 🙂

I noticed that you still have some placeholder text in your blog’s sidebar, on the right side — you can remove or edit that by going to My Site > Customize > Widgets. Look for the Text Widget!

If you’re not sure what to write about, The Daily Post offers a new prompt every day; give one a try! You’ll find them right on the home page here.

      1. I think enabling the ‘like’ button is a good way of engaging other bloggers who maybe interested in your content without necessarily having to comment. Just a thought…

    1. Solid few blogs so far, always enjoy reading and discussing films with others, keep up the good work. I would suggest adding some pictures to break up all the words or maybe have a featured photo. Your blogs are short enough that pictures aren’t a necessity but its always an added plus 👍

    1. I think it is great that you are sharing about your experience with kidney failure. There are surely people out there that can relate. Though I wouldn’t say I have kidney failure, my kidneys were affected by a medication I used to take. Because of that I had to stop that medication and consult occasionally with a nephrologist.

Please note that your first post contains some text that you might want to remove. It looks like text that WordPress might have put in the post as instructions to get your started. Also, be sure to read over your post a couple of times for editing before publishing. I noticed a number of grammar issues.

A tip — you still have a bit of placeholder text in your blog’s sidebar, over on the right — you can remove or edit that by going to My Site > Customize > Widgets. Look for the Text Widget!

      1. You can find a list of active tags at https://wordpress.com/tags/ WordPress allows up to fifteen (combo tags and categories) —make use of them to share your posts. I use categories for the BIG topics and tags for the lesser. Like Category: Poetry; tags: night, moon, sailing, ocean.

Beware: When you see the list of topics others have written about, you may spend half a day just reading all the interesting posts! Best wishes.

      2. This might help:

Tags help readers find your blog.
Categories help people already on your blog find specific things on your blog.

If you wrote a post about your favorite movies, you might give it the tag “movies” so people searching for posts about movies in the Reader can find you. Then, you might give it categories like “Comedy” and “Action” so the people already on your blog who are looking for specific kinds of posts can find it.

Some folks use both, some only use one or the other — it’s up to you.

You’ve got a way with words.:)
      On a side note,if you created the illustrations,you’re basically a masterpiece of a human!:D

    3. Stunning post!
Michelle has already mentioned the widget guide text still appearing at the bottom of your post. WP can be a little tricky when you’re are starting out. I suggest using your browser to edit if the app gives you issues. It’s easier to follow the ‘customize’ options from there.
      Great job overall!

    1. I like your lighthearted humor. And this post I think is very relatable to many bloggers; its not just you. I noticed you do not allow comments or likes on your post. You may want to change that so you can get feedback from your readers. Welcome new friend! I hope you stick with it. 🙂

    2. I haven’t taken a look at your blog yet, but just reading what’s here, I’d suggest now while you’re bored you could jot down some thoughts for future posts, subjects that really mean something to you.
Life happens, we get busy and don’t always get to writing. Then it’s handy to have a few blog posts worked on or at least outlined so we can pull one up and finish it.
Once people follow you, they’re interested in your thinking and what you have to say, especially about current happenings. To be a successful blogger you should aim for posting twice a week or more, not just “whenever.”

    1. Hi, and welcome!

We’re glad you’re so excited about your new blog (yay!), and that you shared your link here. We’d appreciate it if you didn’t leave multiple comments linking to your blog — it’s considered a little spammy and we’ll remove the duplicates. The best way to get people to visit you is to visit them and/or leave them some meaningful feedback!

Looks like you haven’t given your site a title yet! If you’d like to add one (we recommend it), you can do that my going to My Site > Customize > Site Identity.

    1. It’s a great start. I’m very new to blogging too and I’ve learned a lot in the last month by just being a part of the word press community and forum. So far my blog is a kind of “find myself” again. Good luck!!

    1. Looks like you’re off to a good start. Grammatically, you refer to ‘Ashley’ a lot. I would use more pronouns to clean it up a bit. Sounds like you have quite the handful in terms of camping/hiking buddy; should make for a fairly entertaining blog. 🙂

    1. It looks like you’re off to a good start. I read your About page (and who is Jason Statham?) and think you could give readers a ballpark idea where you live, like What-shire?

Be sure to install a Recent Posts widget for when you have a number of posts. It make a blog much more user-friendly. I didn’t check: did you do categories and tags on your first post? This is important for sending your posts to the Reader where others can find them. As I said to another newbie above, WordPress allows a total of fifteen C &Ts. Use them all if you can.
      (See https://wordpress.com/tags/ for ideas)

As to the historic House you’ve written about, you could make this several posts, elaborating more on various features. All the best.

    1. I’m afraid that with such a title and a depressing mostly black header image, your blog is rather off-putting. “Solidary brooder” sounds like you just want to be left alone to ponder the miseries of your existence. I hope that isn’t the case at all, but it’s the first impression I’d get.

You have some great ocean and sky pictures there; why not use one of those for your header. Or a solitary seagull…or swan…or whatever. A bit more upbeat, unless you’re hoping to attract brooding type readers. In which case ignore this comment.

      1. I agree with you Christine! The intention might not be ‘dark’, however a title and feel of the blog can dominate the message you want to communicate – which in this case – can kind of discourage a pictorial mind like mine and deter me from reason further. I’ve been in a space of wanting to be left alone. I was still trying to figure it all out then, but I knew that even if my reasons were valid they didn’t communicate what I really meant within – so I waited until I could communicate my intentions more clearly. I sure hope I do that now 🙂

    1. I found your post to be a good post! My only advice is to make your posts a little more personal- talk about your own experiences and thoughts. Best of luck with your blog! C.

FYI: that link goes to your dashboard, which is private, so people won’t be able to see your site. The simplest way to get the public link is to go to your blog’s homepage and click on the post title. Then, copy the address you see in your browser’s address bar and use that.

    Here’s your homepage: http://theshashanksharma.wordpress.com

It looks like you haven’t actually published any posts yet, so be sure to share once you do!

    1. Hi! That was an interesting post, as I don’t use makeup:) however, I think that most of the people who read makeup posts are looking more for tips/ product reviews than the actual definitions or uses of makeup. So that’s my only advice:) best of luck! c.
