Community Pool

The place for advice, feedback, and friendly blogging chatter.

Have you just published a new post and are dying for some feedback? Did you recently start your blog and could use some layout or design advice from your more seasoned peers?

Tap into the wisdom of The Daily Post blogging community and leave your question here in the comments. Others can then click through and offer input either on your site, or in the comments here (feel free to indicate which you’d prefer).

To help us make the Community Pool a productive space for discussion, here are some tips you might find useful:

TIP: To keep from losing your place in the comment thread while you visit others’ blogs, right-click on a link to open it in a new tab or window.

  • While you’re not required to, we encourage everyone who requests feedback to also reply to at least one or two other bloggers who need some help. Spread the love!
  • The Community Pool comments section can get quite big — and starting duplicate threads doesn’t help. Thanks for not posting the same question more than once!
  • If you’re looking for quality feedback, be as specific as you can. Questions about a particular post tend to draw more comments than ones about entire blogs. Questions about specific design elements are more likely to be answered than ones asking for general layout advice.
  • We discourage leaving links without a more substantive message or question. These are often overlooked by other bloggers, and we frequently remove them to make the comment reading experience smoother.
  • Please keep all comments civil and constructive. The idea is to have fun — it’s a pool, after all!
  • If you haven’t looked at our Commenting Guidelines in a while, now might be a good time.
  • No running on the deck.

    1. Hello! Did you ever receive a comment from me on your time travel post?! I only ask as I’m still figuring out whether this spamming incident is still leaving its trail. Also, are you ever up for collaboration? I had an idea but not sure if you’d be interested.

        Good luck 🙂

  1. Hi guys! Mark here. I have reached the final few laps on my journey to complete my first psychological thriller novel. It is almost finished and what a journey it has been. Now the editing process begins! I have just released my front cover so feel free to stop by and check it out! I still need all the support I can get so if you would like to ‘follow’ please do. It would be very much appreciated! Take care, Mark.

    1. You nailed the cover, even as a teenager i would have chosen this simply on the cover. Most times i flip to the end to help build suspense but the cover accomplished that already.

    2. I really, really love the cover!!! I love books and yes I know that we should not judge a book by its cover but sometimes I do buy books before knowing what they are about just because they are beautiful to look at 😁. And yes, I would definitely buy your book! Great job!

Are you putting on the cho-RITZ-o?

And here’s a tip, especially for new bloggers – be careful how many links you leave on sites. I got tagged as spam last week and it may have been because I shared a post link on a couple of different meet and greets. :/

      1. Hopefully it will make others aware – if you don’t comment on blogs much or don’t login regularly, you run the risk of not realising for a few days, so worth knowing 🙂

      1. I noticed that my comments were not appearing. At first I thought they were just waiting to be moderated but when they didn’t show on blogs I regularly visit and comment on, or in the Pool which doesn’t authorise on an individual comment basis, I queried it with admin support. They didn’t see a problem at first but eventually realised I was wrongly labelled spam.

I’ve set up a new-ish blog and got rid of my old one as it was a tad all over the shop.

I’d absolutely bloody love it if you lot could have a look at the snazzy new one and tell me what you think, about any aspect of it; design, writing style, anything.

    2. I really enjoyed your writing, it engaged with the reader and had a slightly wacky, informal, and irreverent feel with a definite charm too, a great combination that I really enjoyed reading. With regards to design, I think that the simple layout of the theme with the widgets at the bottom works well to put the focus on the writing (though a more colourful theme might echo more with the tone of the writing).
Hope this was helpful, but obviously they’re only my ideas and opinions so feel free to ignore them if you see fit.

I am (gradually) working on a new (currently top secret) blog feature, but it is going to take some time to get up and running and looking nice. I’m anticipating two major changes to take place in about two weeks. It’s going to be super exciting, I promise!

I do have one question for you all this week: how do you encourage readers and potential fans to stay on your site, rather than clicking away after reading a post or two?

    1. I really like your blog and your recipes its an awesome idea, consider me a new follower!

As for getting potential fans to say, its hard. Im not sure how to do it to be honest, keep writing engaging content. respond to comments to let readers know that you are listening to them. I found that sometimes a lot of the same people would coment on most things I wrote, I went on to read their blogs and became friends with them.

      Good luck 🙂

Like many others, I am taking a Thanksgiving Challenge…with a twist.

My son died on the 12th of August 2013. A number of months after The Accident, I decided to choose gratitude and began posting “Twelve Things I Am Grateful for on the 12th” each month.

This month I am posting “Twelve Things I Am Thankful for in November” every day. My post included a list of things I am grateful for plus a prayer and scripture reference to go along with that day’s list.

Check it out and let me know what you are thankful for today!

I am writing for the sake of writing, and meeting that 50k goal. I won’t let it affect me too much personally, and I think that sort of objectivity is necessary to get the job done. I do hope you give it a try in the future. Thank you for reading!

Was ‘ingestion’ supposed to be ‘indigestion’? I think good writing could be made even better by reading through your post a second time before hitting the Publish button.

Regarding your actual blog, I love your logo but hate the background and theme. The organization of your widgets seems to be all over the place as well, you may want to take a look at it. Though, I’ve successfully started doing the same, I could use some honest feedbacks on how clearly (or not) the write-ups are understandable and coherent. So a new visitor’s perspective could give me some much-needed ideas on overall improvement if any.

    1. Hey you, so went through your blog and the poems are really interesting. The content is not really the problem.
Try adding a gravatar image. and update your profile there, because now the image is blank and the blog looks incomplete wihtout it-another reason is adding gravatr image instantly helps readers separate your blog from others. Like you can see even in this comment, your blog icon is blank.
Other thing themewise, Try to keep your widgets to the top(my preference, as I personally find it time consuming to scroll to the bottom of the page, also something that I do so..), and add some menu. The idea is the first half of your page should give an idea of what your blog is about. I am on mobile WP, but in case you dont have a menu, do add it, it completes the blog also helps the readers easily navigate your blog. Hope this helped!

    2. Id add the read more tags, I think they add a provisionality to a blog as well as keeping it tidy. But for you I think they could be important in hiding the twists in your poems, like you said.

I like your theme, it suits your style!

      Good luck 🙂

    3. Just to address a question raised above: the reason some elements of your site switch positions on mobile devices is because of the responsiveness of your theme, meaning that your layout automatically changes depending on your reader’s screen size. You sacrifice a bit of control with that, but gain enormously by having a site that people can read comfortable no matter what device they’re on.

Therefore, I would like you people to have a glimpse at my blog and, if possible, provide me with some productive advice. Any interaction with the blog is highly appreciated and will be payed back.

I would love it if you could head over and give me some feedback, a like or even a follow 🙂

    1. Hey Joe, your blog is really cool, love the blog header btw. My only feedback is the theme, since your blog is image heavy, maybe use a photography theme as it will showcase your blog best. From what I see, you’ve use a theme that’s mostly for texty blogs.

Oh n hey, I have a posted a link somewhere in the beginning , mind giving feeback? thanks.

    1. I like your writing!! I recommend looking back over your posts later and decide what ignites you most. You can always have odds and ends, but I find that having a focus for the blog and a few goals makes it much more rewarding.

    2. Love your blog. It’s awesome to see fellow travelers and writers here on the community pool. Keep up the great work, my friend!
As for what you should be writing: Honestly, it’s up to you. This blog should be for you and what you want. I don’t see anything wrong with you writing about your city if that’s what makes you happy. I wish you the best of luck 🙂
