TIP: To keep from losing your place in the comment thread while you visit others’ blogs, right-click on a link to open it in a new tab or window.

  • While you’re not required to, we encourage everyone who requests feedback to also reply to at least one or two other bloggers who need some help. Spread the love!
  • The Community Pool comments section can get quite big — and starting duplicate threads doesn’t help. Thanks for not posting the same question more than once! We tend to delete duplicate comments asking for feedback on the same post.
  • If you’re looking for quality feedback, be as specific as you can. Questions about a particular post tend to draw more comments than ones about entire blogs. Questions about specific design elements are more likely to be answered than ones asking for general layout advice.
  • We discourage leaving links without a more substantive message or question. These are often overlooked by other bloggers, and we frequently remove them to make the comment reading experience smoother.
  • Please keep all comments civil and constructive. The idea is to have fun — it’s a pool, after all!
  • When leaving comments, please remember not to add your blog’s url as your signature. It’s kinda spammy: after all, your handle links directly to your blog.

  1. Hello all! Leisel from Skill Up Skillet here. For those who don’t know, I run a weekly updating geek and game themed food blog. Supposedly I write well too, according to people who email me just to tell me they’re not gamers but they love my blog. To anyone who’s ever given me feedback, thank you!!
    So I tried to take what advice I could from you guys last week and managed to scrape together a Special Features page which includes a list of announcements, guest posts, features, and news. Because we like to pretend to be credible here, you know. I also significantly expanded my About page. If you could let me know what you think of the changes, that would be fantastic. I kind of did it in a rush because life stuff. Happy to look over other blogs and add my two cents as well, naturally.

    1. I have a hard time gaining followers as well… I noticed you have a Facebook Page, do you have a Facebook Group as well? I notice I tend to get more feedback on My Group page rather than my Page. I wish you luck and hope the best comes to you soon!

      1. No, I don’t have a group set up, just the page. I do post my content to a couple geek/nerd groups I’m part of. I don’t know, I’m not sure that having a group would make much sense in my case? Thanks!

        1. have you advertised your blog to the people you know in real life?
        2. try spending some time to browse the net using keywords relating to your blog. Spend time to sincerely read other blogs and post constructive/sincere comments for them. If you are good and nice, people will start clicking on your name, reading your blog and following you. This method is called birds of the same feathers, because most people who post on blogs you read will like the content you post too, and they will follow multiple blogs if you have valuable content.

      2. What’s g&g? Do I sound stupid? To be honest, you’ve got a really quirky streak and I think it adds more to your blog. I think if you’re persistent and grow your readership you can go places, I can already imagine you being author of a cook book! But because of how your recipes are inspired and how you write about them, it’d be very unusual and entertaining!

      What a tasty idea. Cookbooks are much too grown up and predictable. I hide mine. Aside from all the oil splatter and batter, they are *yawn* and pretty little liars. (No, I have never watched the show.)

      Your writing is fab. Funny and honest. Since authenticity is in such short supply these days that’s cool.

      I find the about us page quite busy. The stuff on the side is distracting from the main course. Dunno if it’s possible to use one or the other. Too many tags on display to be of use (for me anyway). The additional stuff about you on the left menu seems repetitive. Rather place link to “about me” page.

      Clever tag line is lost on background in header. Had to read it a few times.

      Typo? : Oh gods, that’s hard. (gods or god).

      Yummy and original blog indeed.

      You’re a cool chick L! Hope you get to collect loads of bakeware.

    1. Your latest post is very touching. Despite the ruling over here it’s still a rather mixed bag and it’s bringing a lot of prejudices boiling to the surface; it’s almost a little scary watching people draw the lines. It’s a victory, but it’s a small step. Keep up the great work.

        To me, this was a very bittersweet win. I needed to pour the words that were eating me up. The lines were drawn centuries ago in my country. We have adapted to changing technology. Not the changing emotions.

    2. When I went to your blog the first thing I saw was your latest post on the Supreme Court ruling. I thought it was an amazing post and I feel for you. We aren’t done fighting and I firmly believe us Americans have to start helping others around the world get the same rights we are asking for.

    3. Hi, I liked your blog, Love that big bold header, but I also had the problem (in Chrome) that it was covering half of the Title of your top post.

      I liked your posts, you write well. It’s always nice to find the blog of another writer. I followed.

      I especially liked the post My Reason to Write. Very raw and honest and personal. I have a series of guest posts on my Lit blog called This is Why I Read and I’m starting one this month for writer’s and authors called This is Why I Write. This piece or something similar would be perfect for it if you are interested, I’d love to have you!

      I would have commented on the post, but it doesn’t seem you have comments enabled. I’m not sure if that is just a personal preference or an oversight? Comments can be a great way for building a sense of community and getting feedback on your writing.

      The only other comment I’d have is that the menus seemed a little awkward to me. But I think that’s a theme element, but you might try re-arranging the order of what’s available in them a bit.

        I always get people who tell me half my blog’s name is hidden. Now I finally know why 🙂 I have a safari and do not use Chrome at all. Will try and find a way to fix that.

    3. Hi, nice little site. It’s clean and has a defined purpose. I like that you showcase your work in serial form.

      She is correct it should be “effect” not “affect”. That doesn’t mean you can’t still choose to leave it wrong, but people will pick up on it, and it will pull them out of the story. Sorry. Editor here.

      I’ve just read your post and I really enjoyed it. It’s not the type of fiction I normally read but you still managed to keep my mind engaged and make me intrigued enough to want to read more.       3. My novel is a dystopian which focuses on two characters who live very different lives but are somehow connected. It derives from the restriction that social class once placed on certain members of society and the effect that has on power distribution. Thanks for being interested in the novel, I’m hoping that when it is finished it will be seen as more than just another dystopian 🙂

    2. Your way of painting the scene is beautiful! It really draws me in to the story. My brain was tripping a bit over some extra words that could perhaps have been omitted such as “particular” when talking about the route of escape, but good work!

Call it temporary insanity. I also like to believe in everything falling into place at the right time. Maybe today was is that day. Brilliant writing, I look forward to seeing more from you.

      2. Yes, I do suppose I actively avoid things. After the bad week I had last week this was just what I needed. (Everything at the right time and place, remember. I have Stephen King books I’ve never read that I’ve owned for a decade that are just waiting for the right moment.)

      Nice, that really made me curious what he was running from (and worried to death that he was driving drunk out of his mind! LOL) Thanks for the link to the blog with the writing prompts too, what a cool idea. I’m in revisions on one my several un-pubbed novels right now, but haven’t forced myself to work within the confines and discipline of short fiction much and this might be a good exercise for me. I also never post any of my fiction so kudos to you for sharing!

And yes, these prompts are excellent, so happy I found them, it’s definitely a great exercise in trying to tell a concise story, even if I don’t always manage it. I’d also recommend Mara Eastern’s poetry prompts if you’re into poetry at all 🙂 I’d definitely encourage you to post your fiction online, I was wary at first too until I was encouraged by fellow bloggers and everyone has been so encouraging it’s been completely over whelming. I’d love to read some of your work, what is your novel about?

      I liked the suspense and evocative writing.
      The setting was almost thematic of his internal bareness. Not sure if that was intentional or serendipitous.

      Sentences could be shorter to speed up the pace even more, and thereby heighten the tension.

      Watch out for those adverbs: “laughably” “possibly”. As Stephen King said: “the road to hell is paved with adverbs.”

      Check out William Zinsser “On Writing Well”, if you haven’t already done so. My bible.

        That was definitely intentional, thanks for noticing 😉
        And thanks for the advice also, I always appreciate a good bit of constructive criticism. I think that’s the thing about short stories, you have so little room to make any ‘error’ that as soon as you use one too many adverbs or have a couple of sentences that are too long, it really throws it into relief. That’s why I like it so much, because I think, in terms of style, it’s one of the hardest to master.

        I’ve read King and loved his thoughts on writing. Yet to read Zinsser, but he is now firmly on my list, thanks for the recommendation!

Fun story – to be honest i would try to find a way to break that longish blog piece into smaller chunks so maybe a picture of a chicken or a bold heading a third of the way down – anything to give the reader a bit of a break and keep their attention – often when someone sees a whole bunch of paragraphs it can put them off. Otherwise it was great and good to see how everything linked together…

      I liked the post, especially how you tied them together at the end, though at first it wasn’t clear that you would be doing that and as another commenter mentioned it was a long post, so I was a bit confused by … well here’s another (seemingly random) story. It seemed like (at that point) the chicken story should have been one post. So…I would have reassured the reader that this was all going to have a point and tie in together so they don’t have an excuse to say nope, one story is enough thanks and click out.

      I also agree that breaking it up a bit with a photo would have been great, but if not that, just som interesting text headings, pull-quotes, varied text sizes, anything so the reader doesn’t see a wall of text and decide this is too much for their limited time.

      Other than that, great job.

      I’d love to hear your thoughts on mine. My comment is waaayy down on page 3! LOL.

    3. Hi, I really liked your writing especially in response to the prompts, those were great. The top post freaked me out! The images were both killer cool and darkly disturbing. I suppose they could be off-putting to some, but only you know who you want for your audience, and I say don’t try to cater to what you think people want, be true to yourself. I wasn’t sure if this was a fiction piece or if this was something from true life. If it was fiction it was an interesting choice to write in 2nd person (You). I don’t see that much.     2. Hi, First of all great blog. Love the look. Awesome name and fantastic header graphic! I also like the pics you choose for your posts, the funky gifs. I like the triple focus, but it’s all tied in together nicely. I read the ep review, but honestly I don’t know anything about those genres or who those artists are, so I don’t feel qualified to say anything about it, other than it seemed a very professional review, maybe a bit too professional for a blog, unless you are trying to work this into a journalism credit. Have fun with it. Put some of your personality into it. What did you LOVE about it? Why. People can connect to that!

      What I can relate to is book reviews. So I read your review of TFIOS. That was great. You had some really good insights and I’ve read a million reviews of this book. Again, could it stand to be a tad less formal, sure, but this one wasn’t nearly as stiff as the ep review.

      Keep it up. You will find your voice! Or if you are going for professional journalism, you are well on your way!

    1. Nicely written and I’m a metalhead so I could relate (I do listen to rock a lot as well). However the black colored background is something I just couldn’t stand! I found myself straining my eyes to read the letter on screen! I suggest you go for the more traditional white background.

    1. Totally jealous you saw Taylor Swift live!! Hope she was amazing! I love pictures in posts – it makes it easier to read and really adds some visual appeal. I’ll suggest you make the photos a little bigger so that way it will enhance the quality a little more! Hyde Park sounds awesome!

      1. Thanks for the feedback. She was absolutely amazing and I was completely starstruck! Since all of my pictures are taken on my iphone 4s they aren’t always the best quality, but since I’m getting a phone upgrade soon I will definitely be taking your advice and making the images bigger 🙂

    1. I like the simplicity of your blog, it isn’t overwhelming to the reader, and the posts are in a nice, systematic order….and the header for your blog reeled me in quick!

      I would suggest adding a calendar widget, it helps visitors know how often you post, very useful.

      Otherwise everything is in order, keep writing! 😀

    1. For some of your longer posts you may want to start incorporating a Read More tag; otherwise, it becomes tedious to scroll through your posts. Personally I’d also like to see your social media widgets oriented towards the top of your side bar for a more striking visual effect.

I woulds say, though, that the colourful sour patch image caught me off guard a bit with your all blue theme.. not sure how you could get around that, but it’s just an obversation 🙂 keep blogging!

    3. Your layout is fine. Not too small, not too busy. The blue is a fun colour. Your side bar is long, but it’s not to bad. Does your theme offer widget space at the bottom or other side as well? If not, perhaps lessen the length by removing/shortening the social media aspects. Not that it isn’t important, but you have the Connect page at the top, and you have both a Twitter feed as well as the little ‘Lets Be Internet Friends widget. I’d also suggest moving your Categories list up. But all in all, like I said, your theme is fine.

        Now, I went through your blog and was overwhelmed by the pleasant explosion of colors, it is really very beautiful to look at, although at times it takes the attention away from the content but I absolutely love your drawings.
        other than that I think a partition between the various posts would’ve helped me realize that each one was an individual post. It’s all in just one flow which makes it a bit difficult to discern. But the beauty of it is, that since all of it is so helpful I could just close my eyes and click anywhere only to find something that is really interesting to try out!
        so yeah, keep up the amazing work 😀

    2. Go for a walk, unless it’s godawful outside. If godawful, try pacing in lazy circles with your eyes closed. It is not a good idea to do this around low furniture. Take your time. Put your phone down. When you get back, put a writing utensil in your hand and write. A sarcastic grocery list, a stream of consciousness, it can be anything. Draw a line that fits your mood, even, and write about what the line means to you. It might shake a few things loose.

Hi Brent – i would suggest you do some stuff to let the product fall a little more into the background so stories and pictures that will hook people and then the punchline is – hey you can get this too. So from your cover pic to your tagline i would go for something that screams ‘This is life!’ or ‘Be the best you’ or something like that as that is a message that will intrigue people and then they will read a post or story and be like “Wow this is cool, how do i do it” and then at the end of your article or in tabs on the page you make it easily accessible…

      Cos like you say i click the link and it feels like an infomercial and i run like the wind…

Sharing can be scary but so so good if it’s the right thing with the right people – i share pretty deeply on my blog but there are a lot of things i also just keep for my wife or best friends – think a good balance can be most helpful – i have an amazing section on my blog called Taboo Topics where i have invited friends to share stories on a range of topics that are rarely spoken about like singleness or losing a baby or struggling to raise young children and by sharing their very real stories we have seen people encouraged and inspired and start opening up about their own:
