Tap into the wisdom of The Daily Post blogging community and leave your question here in the comments. Others can then click through and offer input either on your site, or in the comments here (feel free to indicate which you’d prefer).

To help us make the Community Pool a productive space for discussion, here are some tips you might find useful:

TIP: To keep from losing your place in the comment thread while you visit others’ blogs, right-click on a link to open it in a new tab or window.

  • While you’re not required to, we encourage everyone who requests feedback to also reply to at least one or two other bloggers who need some help. Spread the love!
  • The Community Pool comments section can get quite big — and starting duplicate threads doesn’t help. Thanks for not posting the same question more than once! We tend to delete duplicate comments asking for feedback on the same post.
  • On the subject of duplicates: please don’t repeatedly share links to your blog or your blogging event. Duplicates will be removed. It’s a bit spammy, after all.
  • If you’re looking for quality feedback, be as specific as you can. Questions about a particular post tend to draw more comments than ones about entire blogs. Questions about specific design elements are more likely to be answered than ones asking for general layout advice.
  • We discourage leaving links without a more substantive message or question. These are often overlooked by other bloggers, and we frequently remove them to make the comment reading experience smoother.
  • Please keep all comments civil and constructive. The idea is to have fun — it’s a pool, after all!
  • When leaving comments, please remember not to add your blog’s url as your signature. It’s kinda spammy: after all, your handle links directly to your blog.
  • If you haven’t looked at our Commenting Guidelines in a while, now might be a good time.
  • No running on the deck.

  3. Allo all! Leisel from Skill Up Skillet here (https://skillupskillet.wordpress.com/). I run a weekly updated geek and game themed food blog and I’m trying to build a decent following. Aren’t we all? I added a new widget (PayPal Donate button) to my blog a few days ago and wanted to know what you think. Don’t worry, I’m not asking you to donate, just want to know if it looks okay/classy/not beggar-ish (unless you want to. bakeware is expensive as heck!). I have also added several new tags to help people find my posts.

    Also, for those of you interested in baking, can you tell me what I did right in my most recent post, the Zerg Cake Roll? It looks like this one is my most popular post to date and I’m excited to continue the trend.

    Good news, I received a lot of views over the past weekend (as in, more than the entire month of May in a week) so you guys are definitely helping me out. I appreciate all of you so much for this. I should be around for most of the rest of the day to offer my input as well. Cheers!

      1. Speaking of what I’m baking next, I need to buy some beans or I’ll be late. I actually have the next month’s worth of recipes planned, or that’s what I like to tell myself. Anything could happen, right? I’m a little scared of my 4th of July idea, but we’ll find out, right?
        Spoiler alert: It involves lit sparklers and it is a delightfully bad idea.

        Thanks for the feedback about the widget; I was kind of feeling like a jerk about it. I do intend to make an extra post to explain why and how it got there, though. I’m just doing my usual procrastinating to the last possible second thing.

  4. Hello!

    I’ve been messing around with menus on my 1990s teenage diary blog for the last few weeks. I’ve gone from just a home page, about page and contacts to adding a teenage diary share, a who’s who chart and a bit of an archive.

    Hypothetically, if you kept a diary as a teenager, is there any other information on the ‘Share your own diary’ bit (under ‘Guest posts’) that you’d want to know?

    Also, how often do you use tag clouds while searching through blogs? I’ve got one down the right-hand side but I was considering removing or reducing it.

      I think your blog is a great idea and has inspired me to dig out a diary I made when travelling in my teens.

      In the ‘Share your own diary’ have you considered adding gender? I always felt that diaries were a female dominated arena so might be interesting to get a view (and also help empathise with the writer) if you know some basic background info. Maybe age when you wrote the diary? Could all be optional obviously!

        Yes, that’s what I meant. I could only see name, e-mail and the comments box on the “Share Your Own…” page.

        I’m sure I will find some shockingly cringe-worthy stories, although I have a vague recollection they largely focused on what I’d eaten and where. Obviously that was very important to me at the time!

        I’m looking forward to finding them again and will share if I can face it.

      3. Ah I see… That’s just the contact form to get in touch with me. Filling that in wouldn’t create a post, it just sends me an email so the potential diary-sharer and I can discuss it further. Perhaps I’ll change the text to make that more obvious.

        The daft level of detail in diaries, even about mundane things, is actually pretty funny when you look back on them. Do get in touch if you fancy sharing any extracts but I’ll totally understand if you don’t want to!

    1. Just a quick one about the pictures… I’ve had a little look and I personally like them. Maybe I’ve got a short attention span but I like pictures to break up text in long post and I actually think a good picture draws attention to (not away from) shorter posts.

      Other than on blogs that I regularly read, if I see a good or interesting picture in my reader or in a search, it can sometimes be the deciding factor on whether or not I click to read more. The post titles obviously help with that too.

      Got to dash home from work but will be going back to read more later!

    2. Rather pleasing reading overall, and I agree with IDST regarding the picture situation. What few pictures you do have up currently are a welcome break between posts. I don’t do much in the way of poetry anymore but you do seem to have a gift.

    3. I really like your writing style and poetry. I think that the pictures add to the posts because they give a sense of feeling before reading to post to kind of set a tone. I don’t think they detract from the content at all. Keep up the good work.

    1. I’m afraid fashion isn’t my thing really, so I can’t evaluate that. However, here are some points about your blog in general:
      *Proofread before posting (eg ” LOOK HOE CUTE”)
      *Perhaps consider a ‘contact me’ page to allow easy and private messages as opposed to putting your email online-this doesn’t show your email so doesn’t lead to spam (unless you reply)
      *You’ve got a good number of tags on your posts
      *I really like your idea of ‘Friday Favourites’, though you may want to explain a little more about it on the page; and I would consider continuing it (just a suggestion though), regular features are good
      *I like the recipes listed
      *The ‘Thoughts’ page is excellent, as is your list post on ‘Cures for a good mood’
      Your blog looks really good, and I have followed (though I cannot guarantee my comprehension of fashion ;)), keep up the good work!

      I enjoyed reading your post. I learned some things from it as well, particularly the part about the real reason why chocolate is satisfying.

      I especially like that you use “I” statements throughout the post. I found it easier to read and consider adopting the ideas than if you had used “you” statements, which can sound like a lecture.

    1. Hello there! I found your post both intriguing and relevant. As a fan of superhero movies, I would love to see a little bit more diversity on the big screen. I’m particularly excited about Micheal B. Jordan playing The Human Torch in the the upcoming Fantastic 4 film.

      There have only been a handful of black/non-white superheros and when there are, their roles are minimized. Like you said, people like to see characters that look like them every once in a while.

        You could work on your About page, maybe develop it a bit by adding a picture:)

        You’ve done the hardest bit already, you’ve created a blog…keep writing and connecting with others through Community pools.

      2. For those, you may want to add something like, “I don’t know the source of this photo. If you can identify the photographer, please comment and let us know.” That way it doesn’t look like it is yours.

    2. As Kathleen says, the pictures that aren’t yours should probably be sourced. There is a way to do this! If you right click on the pictures on your blog (it has to be on the internet), and click ‘Search Google for this image’, all the places the image is used will come up, and hopefully you will be able to find and accredit the original taker.

      4. Matt, The blogger wrote a post detailing his stress over the situation to warn other bloggers not to have uncredited photos. The photographer found out and sued. The blogger took the photo down, but it wasn’t enough. The photographer still sued him, and he had to get a lawyer which was extremely expensive. To help others avoid that expense and stress, he wrote the post. That’s all I know. Now, I try whenever I can to take my own photos. Maybe Dandelion should take the uncredited photos down. Flickr has photographers’ names and amazing free photos. Dandelion could begin again with cool credited photos.

      5. Thanks for telling me, I’d heard that sometimes things like that go badly wrong… I’ll have to take a look at my earlier posts and check I credited my sources. However, I do really admire you for only using your own photos, that’s a great skill.

I really like the way your poetry flows, despite the fact it doesn’t have a rhyme scheme it has a very distinct rhythm that comes from the clashing consonants and half-rhymes that gives it a wonderful tone. Something I can never quite manage with my own work, but nice job, keep it up, will be interested to read more.

    1. If you’re after a bigger following, Community Pool is one way, but another popular one (though it requires a reasonable following before) is a blog party. However, if your blog does not have sufficient readers already, the party could flop which is not a situation you want. Social media (which it looks like you have) is meant to be one of the best ways to increase traffic, and guest posts are often considered another good way.
      I’m afraid I don’t watch Game of Thrones so cannot critique that. The fact that (I think) you did your own descriptions of the TV shows is very good. Sorry I couldn’t have been of more help. The last thing is that having so many widgets down the side, on short pages such as your about page, it scrolls down a bit.

    1. My first suggestion would be to spell out your words. Grammar and syntax errors really put readers off, especially when you’re appealing to a literary set.

      For your blog itself, I recommend breaking up your posts. You have a lot of large blocks of text which can turn off casual readers. Trying adding more spaces or pictures to vary the appearance. This will make each post seem visually more inviting. I realize your posts are short, but even posts of a few hundred words can seem impossibly dense when they aren’t chunked well.

      I hope this helps, good luck with your writer’s block, it affects all of us.

      2. Admittedly, these suggestions are exactly why I clicked off of the blog (and believe me, I always want to give fellow coffee addicts more credit than they probably deserve; it’s a solidarity thing I guess). Spelling, grammar, and paragraph breaks are your friend!

    2. Hi there! The first that that caught my eye was your header photo and background image. Very simple yet still visually appealing.

      I particularly liked your post “Living in My Own Skin” but like others have said, watch out for grammar and spelling errors. This is a great post/blog and it sucks that it doesn’t get the attention it deserves just bc of a few grammatical errors.

      My first suggestion would be to rework your bio a bit. Lists of descriptors don’t really tell us about you, perhaps you could rearrange it so that the list comes after a few lines about yourself.
      I like your layout. It grants one quick access to your articles and invites visitors to read what he or she finds interesting. I think you’ve mastered the use of that theme, well done.

      I agree with thistle, I would rather hear some historical bio and how you got into writing rather than a stream of conciousness approach. Also, if you are going to use a theme that utilizes a lot of pictures, I would love to see a picture for every post-particularly pictures you took yourself.

    I was really excited to restart a weekly post called Fortune Cookie Fridays on my blog, the idea being that each week I’d select one of my preserved fortune cookie fortunes and write a short piece of fiction using the phrase as a starting point. I was excited until my girlfriend mentioned that fiction isn’t really within the realm of the blogosphere’s appetite. What do you think?     1. I like the idea. It’s different and has loads of possibility. In disagreement with your girlfriend: The blogosphere is for whatever you want it to be! There’s tons of fiction on WordPress. Have fun with it.

    3. I think that is a fantastic writing prompt idea! I have seen a lot of people post fiction pieces. Eventually you can combine your best ones and release them as a ebook! Such potential here. In the end, if it feels right to you go with it.

  28. Hey all! I have a question that not only pertains to blogging and my blog, but your perception in general: Do you know what an archivist is or does? Some of you might have an archive section on your blog, but do you know what an archive is?

    I’m an archivist and, as such, this colors my view of the world. I’ve been wanting to write on what non-archivists think or know about this weird record historic document “thing” known as an archive. So, what do you think?     1. I think I have a general, abstract idea of what an archive is and from there what an archivist must do. I can’t say I’ve ever given it much thought outside of looking for information from items no longer deemed immediately relevant.
      I found your post amusing. I’m not sure I better understand how an archivist define’s his or her role as opposed to a librarian, curator, or other such specific organizer, but I was very much entertained.

      1. Yay! I was going for giggles with that one. To be honest, we just give up and tell people we’re librarians half the time because things like permanent/impermanent, retention schedules, preservation/conservation, and access aren’t that sexy to discuss at cocktail parties.

        But — yay! Entertained!!

  29. Hey everyone! I absolutely love coming to this thread every week, since I find lots of new blogs to follow. I also like to receive criticism on my work, since it helps me a lot. I also need advice on my header, which I recently changed. Any other suggestions to help me improve my page are always welcome, and I love to do the same!

    1. Hi Noopur… I loved your blog layout, but due to the colour of the font in the header, it looks dull in comparison to the rest of the blog. The ‘links’ in your blog are blue, which add a pop of colour, and takes the reader’s eyes there immediately…

      4. It looks so different now Noopur!! The blue looks great! Though I still find that the font colour is a little on the ‘dull’ side, but from what I read in your other comments, that’s the mood that you are trying to set?

      5. I believe so, I primarily wanted it to be greys and blacks and whites, but this looks more soothing, I think. Also someone suggested to make the font colour the same as the bg, I can’t think of any other!

    2. The blog seems cold because of the greys and blues… and the similar tone of the header and the background makes my eyes tired. I couldn’t stay on the page for longer than a minute before my eyes hurt… maybe make the colors more different?

      5. YES! It is much easier on the eyes! MAYBE, maybe you could change the header font color to match the background color- but I’m just being nit-picky about that haha, looks great now!

      I like your header, if you’re not sure about it, add some colour to it, but still keep it simple!
