Community Pool

The place for feedback, advice, and friendly blogging chatter.

Have you just published a new post and are dying for some feedback? Did you recently start your blog and could use some layout or design advice from your more seasoned peers?

The Community Pool is for peer feedback and advice. Looking for more specific information? Check out some of these resources:

Tap into the wisdom of The Daily Post blogging community and leave your question here in the comments. Others can then click through and offer input either on your site, or in the comments here (feel free to indicate which you’d prefer).

To help us make the Community Pool a productive space for discussion, here are some tips you might find useful:

  • While you’re not required to, we encourage everyone who requests feedback to also reply to at least one or two other bloggers who need some help. Spread the love!
  • The Community Pool comments section can get quite big — and starting duplicate threads doesn’t help. Thanks for not posting the same question more than once!
  • If you’re looking for quality feedback, be as specific as you can. Questions about a particular post tend to draw more comments than ones about entire blogs. Questions about specific design elements are more likely to be answered than ones asking for general layout advice.
  • We discourage leaving links without a more substantive message or question. These are often overlooked by other bloggers, and we frequently remove them to make the comment reading experience smoother.
  • Please keep all comments civil and constructive. The idea is to have fun — it’s a pool, after all!
  • To keep from losing your place in the comment thread while you visit others’ blogs, right-click on a link to open it in a new tab or window.
  • If you haven’t looked at our Commenting Guidelines in a while, now might be a good time.
  • No running on the deck.

    1. It was a really nice tribute, its so sad to think some people see such horrible things at such a young age. There are a lot of terrible things happening in the world at the moment 😦

    2. I thought this was a really insightful post. People are always very quick to give their opinion on terrorism and I think it’s really important to hear from people who experience it first hand: The innocent people who have no political gain by talking about it. Thank you for sharing this!

    3. It’s weird isn’t it? That even in this day and age there are still people out there that think they need to do these actions.
It can be said for anything, it’s horrible to think that every person involved in this had dreams, a life, a job, friends and family.
I know that war and human suffering at the hands of other humans will always be a thing, but surely, surely we must be getting closer to a time when we don’t have to resort to these actions?

There’s loss on all sides when this happens and for that, it saddens me deeply.

      1. I admire your honesty. You appear to enjoy being you. In my young 60 something opinion, your personality is all up in your blog.

That to me, is what makes it a Mecca of sorts for your followers. Relatable, yet humble is key!

Nice design, which seems to be congruent with your prose.

      2. Thank you for the appreciation! It’s words like these that tell me I might be doing something right. I have tried to experiment with several themes but somehow nothing fits as well as this one and hence keep I coming back to it! I hope I can keep the good work going! Thanks again, Sparky Jen!

    1. Hey Eddy, so I’ve checked out your site and left you a few comments too. Just wanna say, awesome work, great content, loving the stars rating system too, no idea how you got that in there lol!

Anyway, just wanna say that I couldn’t find any “Archive” section and I think it might be a useful tool to include for readers who’d like to check out your older posts.

Aside from that, I got nothing much else to comment on. Your site looks really clean and organized, the images are really nicely used and overall, my visit was really smooth and pretty cool.

Keep up the good work my friend! Hope you can check out my site in return and let me know what you think!

      1. Hey Benjamin, thanks for all your comments and thorough feedback. Really glad you like my content. I do have a menu with a full review index and all of my old articles – would you say it’s not clear enough to find?

Also, I really like the idea of your site. It’s basically exactly how I feel, and what I’m trying to do with my life. Your writing and overall layout is nice too, very clear easy to navigate.

(The star thing is just an image I photoshopped. Sorry to spoil the mystery!)

Well, maybe it’s me missing it due to lack of sleep affecting my perception (Work is sucking my energy source dry!) but when I’m settled over here, I’d check it out again and let you know?

I’m happy to hear that you share the same idea as the team! Perhaps if you want to, you can check out our forum?
Everything is new as of this moment so nothing much is up yet but I foresee things to change pretty soon but before that, it’ll be nice to see the change happening and maybe you can join us and be a part of the changing process 😉

    2. Hi Eddy! I can’t read your latest review on Batman V Superman because I haven’t seen it yet but I will check it out later this week. I did take a look at your Jump Scare post and I loved it. You have a great style of writing and your thoughts are very clear and easily accessible even for those who are not horror fans. Of the movies you have listed, I have not seen The Witch, so I will definitely check that out. I am an avid horror fan myself and it’s great to see someone who truly appreciates the genre!

And thanks, really. Comments like this make it easier to keep going when it feels like no-one’s reading! Ha. Always like to meet a fellow horror fan, too – what are some of your favourites?

      2. Yeah I will check it out at the end of the week. Well I did actually really enjoy The Babadook and The Conjuring. The newest version of The Evil Dead really disturbed me, like I am 99% sure the DVD haunted my apartment. I think The Strangers was really good and terrifying.

    1. If you want to do a giveaway and you feel like it is a good idea, then do it. Blogging is the freedom to write. You don’t have to conform to anything. I personally really like the idea of giveaways 🙂

      1. I see what you mean. But honestly, don’t change your content. It is great, and if the content you are producing now is something you are passionate in keep it. Because if you changed your content, that doesn’t truly reflect your personality, then people are loving you for things that you are not. I love your blog, keep up the good work 💕

Always love looking around your blog and I really like how you’ll be writing other people stories on your site, I wish you luck in that accord and hope a lot of people participate 🙂 In regard to the giveaways, I think that’s a great idea! It’s always a way of increasing your following as well as generating more buzz around your site. Good luck with everything and I hope you have a lovely rest of the day!

      1. Thanks lovely! I am looking for anything honest/personal – so far I have had a story about online abuse, a story about mental health, and a story about insecurities. I’d like an array of stories – can be something you experienced that was negative or positive. I’m actually setting up a Kickstarter for it, as I think it would be a beautiful magazine one day – I just think a lot of people’s stories need to be told and sometimes they don’t know how or are too scared to do so (mine are all anonymous). If you wanna get involved holla at me! 🙂

Question: Why in some places do you use a lower-case “i”???

      Liked by 1 person

      1. It’s definitely not on purpose. I am used to the computer that I normally write my blogs on, automatically changing the lower-case I to an upper-case. So then I guess when I use my laptop it doesn’t do it automatically.

In my opinion, your blog reads a tad like a journal, or a diary. Just a mention.

Also, I would like to see more breaks. New paragraphs, maybe a picture of you with each post, or a caricature of you. Just a thought.

Overall, I enjoyed the reads. I left likes, but couldn’t seem to find a way to leave comments???

One thing I’d like to mention though is the fact that some of your posts have large blocks of text, this can be pretty daunting on the eye for a reader. I would suggest you split said posts into some paragraphs 🙂 Good luck with your blog and I hope you have a lovely rest of the day!

    1. Hi Mac…..I used to have the Adelle Theme for my blog a while back so I immediately liked “the look” of your blog.
My only thing is that I don’t know exactly the purpose of your blog. I think you can define this a bit on your About page. Just so your audience knows what to expect from you. For example, I can see you like travel, food and general topics.
I think it will help to elaborate more on your About page.
      Good luck!

I left a comment on your blog too. I wish more visitors would, don’t you???

Personally, I like your writing style. Would you say your blog is more of a Personal Blog? I notice you write on many interesting topics.

I’m still deciding on a cubby for my blog too. In my opinion, posting is more important at first. Otherwise, you fixate on the “What Is This” question and stall. Just a mention!

Keep on rolling. Oh! Love the name of your blog.

    1. Hi…I like your logo because I can get the gist of your blog from it.

However, I tend to view blogs (especially my own) in all browsers, and using laptop, iPad, and phone. That way I can tell how responsive the blog is resized up and down.

Your logo (though very cool) look a bit small to me by comparison to other objects on your page. Could you check all your devices and see what you think???

I wouldn’t have brought up except it was my very first thought.

      1. Oh that’s a very good point! I was struggling to make it fit on my Twitter header and kind of forgot about the other optimisations. My only difficulty is, I can’t make it much taller and if I make it wider I think I’ll need more content to add to it but don’t want the issue of it looking to cluttered. I think I’m going to have a look at work tomorrow and on different devices to see how it appears and try and make it look better! Thank you for the comment though, I really appreciate it!! 🙂

      1. Haha I don’t think it is your eye sight, I think the triangle background is quite busy so maybe that is drawing away from the text. I think I’ll have a play around with more fonts and colours to see if I can stop it from being lost amongst the other components! Thank you! 🙂

  5. Hey everyone! I run a pop culture blog, and I usually write about specific topics, but in this week’s post I went for something more general, wondering about series like Pokemon and Star Wars, and if they will ever end. I worry this post is too vague or doesn’t say enough. If you have a second, let me know how it is.

Is Media ever supposed to end?

    Thanks!

    1. I attempted to leave this comment on your blog. There was something about a ping back. I was allowed to leave it.

I found the pop culture analysis post interesting, and insightful. I knew a little about your subject matter, so that help me to stay focused.

Here is my comment. I cut and paste it here:

I didn’t have a lot of access to comics when I was growing up (50’s), but I was aware they existed. I guess they weren’t exactly thrown at girls anyways.

Today, I eat, drink, and sleep movies and tv shows based on Marvel Comics. I’m thrilled they still exist, but must admit I prefer the characters Live & in motion.

      Keep Pop Culture Alive!!!

      1. Hey Jen! Thank you for your kind words! Just out of curiosity, which post were you trying to comment on? Was the ping back a problem?
And you make a strong point – there has been a gradual takeover by comics in all media, as they’ve shifted from a niche market to a mainstream powerhouse.
        Thanks again!

I didn’t read. I scanned. Still learned that using formatting is another key piece because not everyone has the time to stay long on your blog.

I’m new myself. Looking at other blogs helps me grow as a blogger. Personally, I love leaving comments. I’m hoping more visitors will consider leaving more than a ‘like’ as well on my blog.

      1. Thanks so much for the comment Natalie. Yes, I’ve been told about adverbs not being particularly liked by editors and I know my usage can be on the heavy side (along with exclamation marks 😉) However, I was mindful of this when I re-edited my daft and have certainly reigned them in. I found it bizarre when I first read about it, as adverbs are taught extensively in school over here to add to quality to writing.
Your piece on ballroom dancing was really interesting – such a great way to be active and I completely understand about the confidence / empowerment angle.
