To help us make the Community Pool a productive space for discussion, here are some tips you might find useful:

TIP: To keep from losing your place in the comment thread while you visit others’ blogs, right-click on a link to open it in a new tab or window.

  • While you’re not required to, we encourage everyone who requests feedback to also reply to at least one or two other bloggers who need some help. Spread the love!
  • The Community Pool comments section can get quite big — and starting duplicate threads doesn’t help. Thanks for not posting the same question more than once!
  • If you’re looking for quality feedback, be as specific as you can. Questions about a particular post tend to draw more comments than ones about entire blogs. Questions about specific design elements are more likely to be answered than ones asking for general layout advice.
  • We discourage leaving links without a more substantive message or question. These are often overlooked by other bloggers, and we frequently remove them to make the comment reading experience smoother.
  • Please keep all comments civil and constructive. The idea is to have fun — it’s a pool, after all!
  • If you haven’t looked at our Commenting Guidelines in a while, now might be a good time.
  • No running on the deck.

      1. I would appreciate any sort of feedback. Does my theme fit what I’m blogging about? Is there anything I could add to my blog, in terms of widgets or whatever? Just anything, really. 🙂

      2. Rach, I think the title of your blog is much more specific than your title and tagline let on. I read through a few blogs and they are all Christian based many with a scripture to emphasize your point. I think this is a nice touch. For me being a new visitor to your blog I was a bit confused between the title/tagline and the blogs until I scrolled through and read some more and discovered what your about. Let us know from the beginning.

      3. Thank you for the feedback. My idea was to put my own thoughts on Christian-based ideas. I also blog about imprisoned Christians, as I’ve decided that goes well with what I want my blog to be about.

        I thank you very much for the candid feedback. I’ll look into how I can update my tagline (I assume that’s the sentences under my title?) to be more specific. It’s nice to get a look into what my blog looks like to a new visitor. 🙂

        I enjoyed your post about posting food. 😛 I myself don’t post food, but I don’t mind it when others do, especially when the food looks oh so yummy. 😀 I think you have a good number of widgets on your blog that really compliment your blog, and at the same time don’t clutter it.

    2. Hi Rach! I’m rather new to blogging so I’m not sure how qualified I am to give any advice here…:-) I’m spiritual but not exactly as religious so the content doesn’t resonate to me but I do think that your writing is very good and I like your activism. I do think that making your heading more visually captivating may help. You can go to PicMonkey which is free and put together a very nice heading. It can be as simple or complex as you want. Those are just my thoughts. 🙂

Like your blog and the topics you go over, my only suggestion would be to change the color of your “Title’s”, the blue background followed by a blue title takes away the sense of urgency, which will eventually result in less clicks on your blog! Hope it was helpful, would love to hear some feedback too

        I would simply suggest adding some widgets, like a widget that allows people who aren’t on WordPress to follow your blog via email, and/or perhaps one that lists your recent posts, or your recent comments, etc. 🙂 Let me know if you don’t know how to add widgets and I’d be happy to help. 🙂 Too many widgets will clutter your blog (personally) but a few will make your blog more dynamic. 🙂
        Oh, and great post about the current school system in U.S.A.

      3. Sure! WordPress just updated for me (and hopefully for you too so we’re both on the same page.)
        1. Click on My Sites on the top left.
        2. Scroll down and click on Customize on the left side.
        3. Click on Widgets on the right side.
        4. Click on Sidebar on the right side.

        From there you can click +Add a Widget to search through the available widgets and add the ones you want! 🙂 Let me know if this works for you. You can even customize some of the widgets. For example, if you were to add the widget that allows people who aren’t on WordPress to follow you via email, you could customize your widget to say “Follow me!” or whatever you want. 🙂

      Love how clean your blog looks, & the only thing I would suggest (appart from just keeping it up!) is to add some visually stimulating components. I know some people have suggested Widgets, but even regular images in your posts would break it up a bit!

    5. Hi Rach! I love the idea behind your blog, but I think the title could be more specific so that your readers are more clear on what you’re going to blog about. I also would love to know more about you on the About page. I want to know where your passion comes from when it comes to imprisoned Christians and how you stay informed and how your readers can help. I just started blogging, so I’m also looking for any feedback you can provide. I started a storytelling blog and I want it to make people laugh, give hope, and just be relatable in general.       1. Thank you for the feedback! Ugh, I see need to work on my About page. I’ve gotten different kinds of feedback on it. One person said she liked it, another said it needed work. I’ve been busy recently, so perhaps over the holidays. But you’ve given me some things to highlight in my About page, so thank you! I’m also planning to post a page listing all the imprisoned Christians I know of, and what their situations are. 🙂 I encourage you to keep coming back to my blog!

Assuming you plan to keep posting, I would suggest adding the Search widget, so people can easily find a post you’ve posted in the past.
        I feel like your theme could be a little more colorful (based on what you’re talking about), and yet at the same time I like the colorful header, white background, and black text. Keep blogging! 😀

    1. What a beautiful blog! You truly do address some of the loudest thoughts that we have, as a human race, and it is worded wonderfully while challenging the reader to stretch themselves and grow. The only suggestion I could think to contribute would be to solicit more interaction/discussion from your commentators, to see if more of a collective voice would spark greater change or introspection.

    1. I think your blog’s style (the font, the layout, etc.) fits with your blog posts, looks unique and friendly. The content is also upbeat and funny (I left a comment on the ’18 ways ..’ post, and liked the 5 stages post (though mine are very different.)

      My only suggestion is that you might consider adding a ‘home’ item to the top menu (or whatever cool euphemism you come up with for ‘home’.) Though your site title links to the post page, it takes those of us who are slower a while to figure that out:)

    2. Definitely the best blog I have seen visually. Interesting topics and interesting writting style! I recently created my own anonymous blog but I am a writter for a famous one. Here is my advice, if you are looking for sponsors you need to find a character in your writting, and reach out to people you know. Obviously you will need more followers, but I can’t stress enough, it is essential that your writting is not only fluid but it has characte.

    2. Hey – I liked your blog post about the party (as much as one can like reading about other peoples depression!) and related to it. People invite me places and due to health/depression I will always say ‘I’m a firm maybe – I want to go, but it’s not always easy’ and that way nobody is too disappointed.

    2. Thanks for the Boxing lesson – I always wondered what those Canadians were doing. Christmas crackers are all over the place here now and yesterday I went to an outdoor market – such as you described – except it was called a “Winter Market” and there were no colored lights. Glad you can still call things Christmas in the UK.

  6. Wonderful fellow bloggers,

    I’m trying to decide between two formats for my cartoon gallery and would love some feedback. Which works better, Gallery A or Gallery B? Gallery A has bigger thumbnails, which link to the original posts, vs Gallery B where they link to a carousel, and does Gallery A’s spacing/alignment go wonky on some screens?

    Thoughts/suggestions on anything else are appreciated, and I will cheerfully reciprocate with a look at your blog, so please include your URLs!

    1. Those are some of the funniest cartoons I have seen in a while, great job!
      I’d say Gallery A suits your blog better as the larger thumbnails are of benefit here. Maybe you could change the configuration a bit so that the full-size cartoons open up in the same tab. In my opinion that would improve the user experience.

      3. To add the falling snow, Go to ‘Settings’, then ‘General’. Scroll down to the bottom of the General page and, just above the save button, you’ll see a box to check to add the snow. Be sure to hit save after checking the box 🙂

    1. How lovely to stumble upon a blog talking about film… one of my favourite subjects. I like that you encourage comments below a lot of your posts, I don’t see many people doing that, but it’s a good way of encouraging reader participation I would think. Everything also seems to be laid out clearly, your menus are good.

      Perhaps you could think about putting a ‘similar posts’ link at the end of each piece… might encourage readers to browse a bit further?

    2. I really like your site. It’s really busy but it’s busy in a clean way, if that makes sense. I poked and prodded and I think your site tells your visitors that you’re friendly and funny, and of course, opinionated. I think your theme fits what you’re writing/doing. For the one on minimalist posters, I can only say that I like the layout. I only recognize Final Fantasy and Zelda 😦 (the face is because I have no interest in Final Fantasy and Zelda but I know an abundant of people who do), but I like the picture of Link at the top 🙂

I don’t know that I qualify as someone to give feedback as in addition to the lack of experience I am running a new blog form my company, but I think that short post does a great job at initiating conversation with a simple statement and question and I believe that’s the whole point of a blog, right? Great idea.

    3. Clever – and yes, cover those peels. To answer your question, I like short and sweet, especially this busy time of year. I often won’t click on a post that is much over 800 words, unless the words are from a blogger (Momastery, for example) who I know can hold my interest for the long haul.

    4. I much prefer shorter posts because I usually don’t have much time to surf, and your little snippets with the photos are great, quick reads. I’m following.

      The four column layout is a very effective way to let readers to scan the posts quickly, which is great. If I had more content, I’d switch to one like that, too.

    5. I like something short and sweet – nothing wrong with a 1000 word rant about Peter Pan or Batman (yes, both examples are me) but it’s often the shorter posts that show off a bit of talent!

    7. Wow, your blog looks great. I wanted to tackle that Daily Post too, you were very quick off the mark! I love these little pocket pieces, I think it breaks the blog up, keeps it interesting. I like to include flash fiction in my blog every now and then, I have never been too sure about them for the same reason.

    2. I think your first post is well written and makes a great point–so good content. From a format stand point, you might want to put a space between each paragraph so that the reader doesn’t get that ‘big block of text’ feel when they first land on your site.

      You might also want to play around with adding some widgets, particularly a follow button.

    3. A very good point well made! For the future, setting up some categories now will be handy for when you have lots of posts (honestly, they build up fast) so both you and your audience can easily go through them without having to find a particular tag. Such a category for ‘random thoughts and another for ‘practical advice’ (nothing to stop something being in both) and one for ‘events’ or whatever suits you.

    I have a graffiti, Streetart and photography Blog in German Language.
    The most stuff are pictures.
    Now my question. The language of the blog is in German, my English is not as good as i would like it could be. But I want to show my pictures more people.
    Would you think it is necessary to write complete in English or is it ok to have the written word in English AND German? The headline – in english? For example one of my posts, small text, much pictures, of an old abandoned prison.

    1. Since your blog lives mostly off of the imagery I’d suggest sticking with German. A well written description in your mother’s tongue is better than forcing yourself into another language you aren’t fully comfortable with IMO.

Hi Jörg – as Philipp says, it would be a lot of work to translate absolutely everything into English, but as you already have a few categories like Lost Places Natur und Kunst and Outside Germany titled perfectly in both languages, you’ll be attracting readers who come to you via English search terms as well as German ones.

      How about a few words to welcome your English speaking readers on your About page? The way you put it above: “My English is not as good as I would like, but I want to show my pictures to as many people as possible” works perfectly.

    1. To create a sidebar, you’ll first one to make sure your theme supports one -which you can by looking at two-column themes in the Theme Showcase:

      Next, you’ll want to populate the sidebar with the widgets of your choice. There are quite a few to choose from; here’s some information to get you thinking about widgets:

  23. Hi, I’ve been blogging for a while now – writing reviews of history books, podcasts, exhibitions or any other random items that catch my eye.

    I got some useful feedback from the last one of these, so I am interested to try again.

    I previously had problems with long posts and the layout making the blog quite hard to read, but I have changed the theme and started splitting posts up (and editing some of the older ones to make them easier as well).

    The tagging is still a bit of a work in progress, but I’d love any opinions on the length and readability of the blog.

I took a look at a few posts and felt the length was appropriate to the material (though the post about the Battle of Tanga was admittedly a much easier read) My only suggestion would be to add some more graphics or perhaps a map to add more flavor to the history considered.       1. Go to post 58, 5th paragraph, last line. You mis-typed “kingdoms” for “kingfoms”
      2. History enthusiasts high-five!
      3. I see that you only deal with ancient history. Might I suggest you try and find a book on the Mongols conquest? They got to the Roman Empire. But if I’m not giving your blog a close enough look, better let me know for the next sentence. You should look into ancient China too. Super rich history.
      4. I used to find ancient history super fascinating, but I’d prefer videos, since I watch this stuff on pbs. Reviews should be short, but I understand that in post 58, as you wrote, the time period is not well-known, so you’re giving readers a history lesson.

        3. I don’t only deal with ancient stuff – I’m currently reading a book on Paracelsus and 16th century culture, for example, and I have written occasional posts on the medieval era. But it is certainly my general preference.
        I will look into a book on the Mongols. Dan Carlin did a very good podcast series on them not long ago, so I might start there for recommendations.
        4. Yes, I try to merge the review and the history into one awkward mix! Unfortunately I’m not up to making videos or even podcasts myself, but I have thought about posting about any good documentaries out there. Most of mine would be BBC though, so out of reach for a lot of people.

      2. Oh, if you like medieval stuff, check out medieval Japan where the samurai’s roam Japan! The trick is to find out who is in charge of the country. Good luck finding that out.

      5. I picked up as much as I needed to get the background of the Shogunate. Tbh I need to read a lot more Japanese history (and Chinese and Mongol … asia in general) – and take a trip there at some point.

        I’ve got a bit of a stack of books, but would be happy to add to it. Any suggestions?

      6. Assigned textbooks to recommend:

        1. Rhoads Murphey – A History of Asia. It’s good for general stuff and his intro. gets you to think about mainland Asia and SE Asia. Does Asia really fit?
        2. Patricia Ebrey – Chinese Civilization: A Sourcebook. It’s Chinese primary sources that I extra recommend (if there was such a thing). It covers ancient to modern China, but modern China is changing so much, some of the modern stuff is bound to be outdated – haha. You won’t regret this one.
        3. Kenneth B. Pyle – The Making of Modern Japan. Chapter 1 is brief about feudal Japan being super similar to feudal Europe, but then it goes into how the 3 unifiers – Oda Nobunaga, Toyotomi Hideyoshi, and Tokugawa Ieyasu – attempted to unify Japan from this feudal era, then moves on.
        4. Lynn H. Nelson and Patrick Peebles – Classics of Eastern Thought. There’s an introduction to each piece of primary source so you don’t get lost! If my memory serves me correctly, it starts with Hindu Vedic Hymns and goes on to Chinese and Japanese sources later. Warning: it’s mostly religious stuff – as most of the ancient world is often revolving around religion, but less religion as the chronology continues.
        5. Valerie Hansen – The Open Empire: A History of China to 1600. Obviously an overview about China but the Mongols are also covered when they take China and much of the landmass westward.
        6. (Japanese Woman’s name) Cook and Theodore Cook (so Cook and Cook) – Japan at War. I also super recommend this, because it’s a primary source for Japan during WWII. The introduction is worth a read and you’ll see why it’s so precious, and see the inside of Japanese as the book goes on.

        Optional:

        2. John E. Wills (Jr.) – Mountain of Fame: Portraits in Chinese History. About select notable people in Chinese history, including Confucius, Empress Wu, and Yue Fei.
        3. Charles Benn – China’s Golden Age: Everyday Life in Tang Dynasty. The Tang Dynasty was China’s greatest dynasty (I wrote a wonderful paper on it for this course). It’s format is much the same to the Silk Road book.
        4. Chushingura, aka The Treasury of the 47 (Loyal?) Retainers. See the movie, there are lots of remakes and lots of characters in this super famous play about a super important incident during the Tokugawa Shogunate when Tokugawa (Ieyasu) banned samurais from getting revenge for the lords/daimyos.
        5. Helen Kim. I can’t remember the title but Kim is a Korean woman who wrote about her experience when (imperial) Japanese occupied it.

    2. I really like how you placed images while you were writing to give visuals. The only thing I would suggest is maybe add more color to your website or something else to set your blog apart. However, that depends on you if you would like to keep your blog simple. 🙂 Great start by the way! I also love the snow falling, it goes perfectly with your post!

    3. I enjoyed the design and style of your blog. Not sure if it’s just my device but it appeared as if there was no space between the periods at the end of your sentences and the first word of the next. If it was intentional then I’d have to say it was more distracting than artistic. Loved your description of yourself!

    1. Had a look at your blog. As a travel blogger naturally I was drawn to your own travel category. As far as constructive criticism goes, I noticed several times that your use of verbs wasn’t always consistent to the tense. I’m no grammar expert myself but small things like that stand out. Hope this helps

    4. Hi Zenith. I found your writing incredibly honest. As a former sufferer of depression (yes former-I’d say it gets better but you made your position on that clear, though I’d never use it as a simple platitude) I can relate to many of the feelings you describe. I’d recommend adding some graphics to enhance your posts but ultimately anything that brings you some comfort and relief-even sharing your thoughts with the entire world, is a step in the right direction
