A couple of things which are more of my opinion things. I find the gray text hard to make out. I also think you could split some of the larger paragraphs because I see some thought transitions within them and it helps with general readability.
At the very bottom where you mention that it is a static page, you can also add a link to your blog feed (I personally would link the words “TSOM News”), this way people don’t have to mouse up if the cursor is near the bottom.
And if you want, maybe add some pictures, mostly because I like looking at static pages that include pictures. 🙂

Thank you for your reply!!!! I find it interesting that you’re not the only person who has said the text is hard to read.
I’ll definitely add the link for “TSOM News”. And once I get some good pictures, I’ll be sure to add them!

I agree with Green Embers, the gray text is hard to read. I find the low contrast difficult to read and I’d suggest the using a larger font and split the paragraphs. You have a unique point of view and valuable insight to share. I’m looking forward to seeing pictures when you post them. The best is yet to come!

I have not read any content as yet but as a purely visual thing the knights head with the read square background looks out of place.
With the Menu, I wonder if it maybe getting a little “busy”, there are lots of TSOM references, would they not be better maybe as child menus of a main one called TSOM.
I like the background picture, it is a nice picture but not in your face so much it takes you away from what you have written.
Text size is good and it is clear.

Dear all, I have been writing reviews of books, movies, and music since 2008 (omg already?) and have a hard time getting recognition for my blog – http://www.saharsreviews.com – so I’m thinking there is probably a lot that I can improve about my site which I just don’t see. Is there anything you think would contribute to making my blog better? Is it the content or the presentation? Etc!
LikeLike
Hi Sahar, there is a real sense of community to review sites. I would suggest (if you are not already) reaching out to others – comment on others’ reviews and get discussions going just as others appear to be doing with some of your reviews.
LikeLiked by 1 person
Thank you! That’s actually an area of weakness for me – I read a lot but don’t comment. Do you write reviews?

Book reviews, yes. Occasionally I write “analyses” of video games and films. They’re reviews… sort of 😉

Hi Sahar
I just read a couple of reviews. You have got some very fine work going on you blog. The reviews are excellent. Moreover, blog has a very nice and modern look to it. I liked it.
A suggestions is to try to get some discussions going on your posts. You have written some very fine reviews and comments and discussions ll be an icing on the cake

I guess best way is to engage with other bloggers by commenting on their blogs. Moreover you can try to use social media, Facebook, Twitter, stumble upon etc, and request viewers to provide their feedback on the post.
Hope that helps 🙂

You know, I have this same problem at my own review site. I have been giving it some thought and I think reviews don’t really elicit comments unless someone is really interested in the thing you are reviewing. I think the big thing as others have mentioned is to make sure to comment on other people’s reviews etc.
Also maybe have some sort of editorial/opinion piece about things. Those tend to do better for me.
I’ve been asking other reviewers for guest reviews on our podcast as well to help get some cross promotion (which if you’re interested in giving a guest review let me know).
And finally you might be getting more traffic than likes or comments as people outside of WordPress stumble on your blog (but don’t want to deal with the hassle of WordPress commenting system). I have a friend who lives across the country where that is the case.
Your review blog looks great to me btw. 🙂

Thank you so much for this! I have bumped up comments on my to do list 😉 And I’m really glad you like my blog!
I am going to take a look at your blog to see what you mean by editorial/opinion pieces about things. I *think* that’s what my other blog does – http://www.saharsblog.com – so maybe the mistake was to separate the two.
I would love to give a guest review! And perhaps guest reviewing is something else I should look into. Thank you for the idea!

“Reviews don’t really elicit comments unless someone is really interested in the thing you are reviewing”. I think this is probably key, A number of years ago I used to write movie reviews for a website, there were hardly any comments on them, I wonder if people just read reviews to either confirm their own opinion on something or to see the general consensus on what others think of that film / book / product etc.
LikeLiked by 1 person
moi, that is actually an insightful question: why do people read reviews in the first place? I know why I do it – I like to challenge my thoughts on something in an attempt to expand my view of the world. Where did you post your reviews, so you still write any?

Nice presentation! Easy to choose, peruse something of interest. The writing is very clear and concise, so, reaching out to a community as others have suggested, might be the key.

Sahar, I love your site, especially the home page, and the reviews are quality. But one issue is that I do not see a place to follow the blog on WordPress…and I want to follow! I like how you review books that seems to represent a variety of genres. I agree with Sahar in that I also like your blog’s modern flair. Is there a way to reduce the size of what is read in the boxes on the main page that picture the book and link you to the reviews you’ve written?? I’m a fan of sentences that have as few uses of punctuation as possible. I’m not sure if others feel that way, though. Those are the things I immediately noticed. Keep up the good work!!

Hi Sahar, I enjoyed going over your site. I read a couple of your book reviews available on the Home Page and enjoyed them both. Your reviews are succinct and give the reader a good sense of the novel. One gets the sense that you’re having your say after a careful and deep analysis of the characters and story. Incidentally, I am a new blogger and have put up a longish but breezy travelogue on my Homepage. I’d greatly appreciate it if you took out the time to have a read and tell me your thoughts. Many thanks.

Hey Sid, I’m glad you liked my reviews, thank you for taking a look! I went over your travelogue, and I am torn. On the one hand, I do find it breezy. On the other, it is really, really long, so much so that after awhile, I didn’t feel like I was enjoying a wonderful day in Japan, but rather that I was being dragged along. Perhaps you could keep your unique style of writing but tighten the language, decrease repetition, add pictures so that you can tone down on the description in the text, that might help. Keep writing! And enjoy Japan.

Hi Sahar, thanks for your feedback. Yes, I realise my write-up is very long. I’d put in a lot of detail on purpose actually as it was initially written more as a my personal journal entry. But after several of my friends read and appreciated it I converted it into a blog. The decision not to over edit was again mine as I wanted to retain the detailed daywise narrative. It’s interesting how some readers found that aspect appealing while others got annoyed by it! I will be mindful of what you said. So thanks again.

The story in itself is good, and you are, in my opinion, a good writer. Your story is heavy though both in subject and in paragraph length. I would suggest looking at this short story like very rich food: you enjoy it if you take it in little bites. If you eat too much at the same time, it becomes overwhelming. Perhaps making the paragraphs shorter would make it an easier to read story, as well as making it more powerful. Thank you for sharing!

Hi Cyril, OK, I checked out your blog. The look and feel is really nice, I like the white, the cover picture is nice too (although I get a grey border to me left and right although that might be my resolution). But it looks clean and professional.
I am not sure what you are looking to achieve on your blog? I found on some posts the content was too short with regards words, sometimes of course some posts don’t need much in the way of words, but when there are multiple posts that way then I wonder why I am reading.
The pic with the flower that has (I assume) music followed by a pic of a book, even the lake Nicaragua was not that lengthy, if you’re writing a blog so people get to know YOU then expanding on these things sometimes is nice.
In total contrast is the day nineteen just write, it is a wall of text.
Text size is nice and clear, nice font too.

Hi moi!
Thanks a bunch for your feedback. It is much appreciated.
I guess my blog use is twofold, one, share and advertise my work (novels) and two, share random things from my life with people (writings, photos, music). And a third one I guess, being in contact with interesting people, using my blog as a portal to others’ blogs.
I will take your recommendations at heart and try to expand on the text going together with photos and music. FYI, the shorter sections are quotes from my novel.
Thanks again!
Be well.

hi again Cyril, Thanks for the follow.
I figured the quotes were from the book, Ill admit I didn’t realise the book was yours till I clicked through (congrats on getting published btw).
I wonder does the quotes generate traffic through to the book? as I was reading that front page I’ll admit I noted the pic, and the quote but then just went to the next post.
I wonder if a select sentence or paragraph from the book would ignite the imagination about the contents of the book/s

Hi moi,
Thanks!
As far as traffic to the book goes, it’s not much. But the blog is not geared toward that right now. It’s more a platform to share with people and if they happen to brows and check the book out then that’s a plus.
I added the little blurb about the novel on top of the picture as you suggested.
Thanks again for the feedback!
Have a good day!

Bonjour Cyril 🙂
Your blog looks great – it’s a nice clean format with clear to read text, and the pictures are also really nice.
The content is a little harder to assess. I found it a little confusing and didn’t understand what you were trying to achieve. I have the same problem – I wanted my blog to be a way to sell books, but then I used it as a place to put random collections of stuff.
What I have done since 2008 (it has been and still is a long learning process lol) is that I use different platforms for different things, but I make sure to “intertwine” them. So my Facebook page – http://www.facebook.com/saharsblog – is about my writing in general. I post general updates there. The first of my blogs – http://www.saharsblog.com – is a “demonstration” of the kind of writing that I do but features unique content. The second of my blogs – http://www.saharsreviews.com – is a “demonstration” of how I consume media such as books. My Pinterest – http://www.pinterest.com/sahar009/ – serves as a way to illustrate the images I have in mind when it comes to writing, and my Tumblr – http://sahar009.tumblr.com/ – serves as a random collection of mostly reblogged things that have to do with anything I like. I am still trying to figure Tumblr out, as well as Twitter.
So basically, I would suggest that you hone the use of your blog, to clearly show what it is meant to do, and stick to it. So in one of your replies, you said that your blog is “share and advertise my work (novels) and two, share random things from my life with people (writings, photos, music). And a third one I guess, being in contact with interesting people, using my blog as a portal to others’ blogs.” I think that either you should change from a blog to a website that includes a blog, or “assign” each of your goals to different platforms.
Gosh I wrote a LOT more than I was intending to! I hope this was clear… If it isn’t, let me know and I will try to explain it better.
On a random note, est-ce que le français te manque, maintenant que tu vis aux États-Unis?

Hi Sahar!
Thanks for your lengthy response! Much appreciated.
I can totally see how what you are doing would work better, but I don’t think I have time to deal with that many platforms, summer classes are intense. But I’ll keep it in mind moving forward, for when I do.
I will think on it and tweak my blog in the mean time.

I hope I didn’t come off as a know-it-all – I don’t think my solution is the best 😛 It’s the latest one that I am also trying to streamline so that I don’t have to deal with so many platforms as well 😛 My next step is to go through some website of famous authors and see what they are doing, and refine my own process as I learn from them.

Hey Anjana… You really have some great content and awesome talent at writing. I too share a passion for writing, but don’t end up having enough ideas all the time. Anyways, that is exactly why I was looking to have some invited content in my blog from authors such as yourself.
If interested, kindly check out the link below and it will give you all the details. You may also see the rest of my blog to verify if it is good enough for you to give a bit of your time to add something on my blog. You will be given complete credit for your work.
Finally, whatever your decision is, do let me know. And keep up the great work.

That is excellent… Thank you so much for accepting my request.
Since I have seen you’re story-telling talent, I think it would be good if you would write a short story as your first post on my blog.
I would really appreciate if you would mail me the basic idea of the story and the date by which you could submit the complete thing.
My email id is: xedmundian@gmail.com
Here onwards, we could communicate via email.

You have some good stories on your blog! Some typos, and I would suggest being more consistent with the formatting. Also perhaps look for official publishing formatting, it makes for a more “familiar” look for your readers, which would make the experience on your blog easier on them. And – I mentioned this earlier on this thread lol – have you considered self-publishing a short story collection? I also write short stories and used to post them on my blog – http://www.saharsblog.com/on-sahars-blog/short-stories/ – and received a lot of encouragement to publish them – and I did! http://www.amazon.com/Chills-A-Short-Story-Collection-ebook/dp/B00IBEFGSS/ – it has been quite a fulfilling experience and gives people other than your blog followers the pleasure of getting to know your stories.

Hi all. I blog at journeyofkylie.com and am always looking for new readers/new blogs to read. I write about spirituality (I left Christianity last year and find myself wondering what spirituality looks like for me these days), my experience with bipolar disorder, relationships, and much more. Some of you might be interested in reading and commenting. Thanks, and I look forward to checking out new blogs today! 🙂

Oh hello there, kindred blogger 😉 I love blogs that are basically a reflection on one’s spiritual journey – that’s what I try to do on my other blog, http://www.saharsblog.com! I like your header – it’s a night owl but the colors make it light and match the mantra of “Shine On” which is, I find, a beautiful metaphor for what you are doing. Did you draw it?

Hi, Lauren! I think your blog’s content is great, especially with the photos you post! My only concern is your picture you have as your header is too big for the screen. What do you think? I hope that helps!
LikeLike
Just a couple of things, not about fashion as I couldn’t speak to that. I am not sure if it is me, but your blog header is really really big and a bit pixelated. (I am on Firefox if that helps).
Also to help others, I would recommend the use of Categories and including them in your menu, so people can quickly access certain types of fashion posts that they are interested in. (That’s a bit more advance but definitely worth the time in figuring out how to do it, imo).

Congratulations on starting a blog 🙂 The content is great, but your pictures are a limiting factor. As mentioned, the header is too big and pixelated. The other thing is the lighting in your pictures. I’m sure you follow a ton of fashion blogs yourself and know what I mean when I say that these type of blogs have to really have visually pleasing pictures. Maybe a collaboration with a friend that has great photography skills would work?

I’m happy with the look, but again, if a user cannot navigate easily, then it must be revised.
Thanks in advance for a quick look and feedback.

I like it but in your home page, if you are having to tell people where to go to access content might be a bit of a failure on the blog theme design. Maybe just a bit too simple. Have you looked into Magazine style themes? I am no photographer but I have seen a couple that seemed good and there are some themes which are photography focused. Just my thoughts on the matter.

That is what I am struggling with. *I* really like the format, but I am not sure if the static page defeats the purpose and perhaps I should remove it, thereby allowing the interface to show itself more, or…
I’ll check around on more themes. I wanted a singular presentation model, rather than a ‘gallery’ type look. Thank you for your honest feedback. It’s why I come here!

Oh, the joys of choosing a blog theme. For me it is usually 90% of the theme I like, but there is this 10% I just don’t. I finally have to go with the one where that 10% bugs me the least, lol.

Isn’t that the truth! I’ll see what others say before I spend more hours tweaking. Maybe I am underestimating the WP user too, as I’m sure they run across this template often while out and about.

I like the layout of this theme. The only challenge with it is that because the pictures are laid out as such, a reader doesn’t need to click on them – and might miss out on the fact that you share some thoughts on each shot!

There are a few things I don’t care for, like how to find older and newer posts is wayyyy down at the bottom. And like you say, the ability to view the photos w/out clicking on them. But it seemed the most advantageous for showing the actual work itself, so I purchased it. I’ll probably change my mind again (female prerogative and all), but for now, I’ll see how it goes. Thank you for that feedback! My thoughts are less important than the beauty, I suppose 🙂

Hello friends
My interests include politics, history, sports, movies and music. I have started to blog regularly over last couple of months. I blog regularly for a couple of blogging & newspaper sites on history, politics & sports. I am trying to polish my writing skills by responding to daily prompts. Although accountants and creativity don’t go well with each other but I am trying. In future I intend to work on writing some fiction.
I ll appreciate your feedback on my blog and posts.
Happy blogging.
Thank you very much.

The content is good, the layout is good, but I am not sure about the colours. The text on the main page is a little hard to read, and I feel like there is too much going on because of the various colours – the widgets for example that are white and the pictures etc. But it might be a personal thing, why don’t you wait for other feedback and see if it’s just me or a general consensus?

Thank you for your feedback. Well I am simple person and tried to keep layout simple as well. Some of themes are quite modern looking but I feel it’s not user friendly. Widgets are both personal and for viewers as well e.g letting them know of my twitter and good reads accounts.
I ll try to check whether I can customise and improve font readability.
Thank you very much for taking out time and giving feedback.

Hi, Cielo!
Since my blog is all about being girly, I can’t think a blog could ever be “too girly!” LOL! I think your blog looks great, however, the only thing I could think of to make it “less girly” would be to change your script title fonts to more legible font. That could help your blog be less girly and easier to read at the same time. Just my opinion! I hope that helps! =)

Not too girly looking at all. Font is crisp, legible, topics easily viewable. Maybe you changed something betwixt your query and my view 🙂 It’s ‘cute’, graphics reflect that. Who is your intended audience? That’s key. Good luck!

I did make some changes. My intended audience is supposed to be people (men and women) b/w 20-50. I just wanna sure that my content is appealing to both the genders. 🙂

Hmm, it doesn’t seem too girly to me. Your colors are fairly neutral with blues and greens, I guess with the more pastel colors it could be kind of girly, but I don’t think so. (So not a designer so might need a second opinion on that, lol).
