“Writing: often it is the only thing between you and impossibility.”

Need a jolt of inspiration? This Bukowski poem reminds us of the power of writing, and make us feel good about putting pen to paper.

Writing
often it is the only
thing
between you and
impossibility.
no drink,
no woman’s love,
no wealth
can
match it.
nothing can save
you
except
writing.
it keeps the walls
from
failing.
the hordes from
closing in.
it blasts the
darkness.
writing is the
ultimate
psychiatrist,
the kindliest
god of all the
gods.
writing stalks
death.
it knows no
quit.
and writing
laughs
at itself,
at pain.
it is the last
expectation,
the last
explanation.
that’s
what it
is.

  1. This is exactly something that I would wish to say every single day of my writing experience. Since I was realized this secret i’m all ways writing useful or not. I choose to explain something by writing than oral. Yes, Writing is a power that has everything. This is a wonderful experience that not we are waiting for, but its something we must develop. Keep pressing forward….have a blessed day.

  2. Beautifully written. I’m just discovering the joys of writing. Through writing I can reflect, i can become my own friend, my own critic, my own psychiatrist. Writing connects me to my inner being; that little part of me that neither praises nor judges.

  3. Indeed, writing does more than one can imagine. It’s therapeutic and can be the only thing that keeps a person going in a turbulent world.
    Why should I stop writing?

  4. Writing carried me through a harsh winter of cold weather, lots of snow, and an 83 year old step-mom to care for with dimentia. Honestly, I don’t know how I did it all.
