We blog for a million different reasons, but in the end, we’re all storytellers. Creative Writing Challenges are here to help you push your writing boundaries and explore new ideas, subjects, and writing styles.

To participate, tag your post with DPchallenge and include a link to this post, to generate a pingback and help others find and join the challenges. Please make sure your post has been specifically written in response to this challenge. We’ll keep an eye on the tag and highlight some of our favorites on Freshly Pressed on Friday.

A few weeks ago, we published a roundtable on humor writing, featuring some of your favorite funny bloggers. They gave great advice, offering pointers on everything from the importance of editing to combining comedy and tragedy (and of course, they revealed the critical gem that a monkey riding a dog is always funny).

Time to work out your own funny bone! This week, write about whatever topic you’d like, but go for laughs.

Poke fun at yourself, write a limerick, find the absurdity in a real-life situation, come up with some groan-worthy puns, sketch a comic, put some fictional characters in a farcical situation — all’s fair in comedy. If you didn’t see the roundtable, take a minute to skim it for tips and inspiration.

Want a little more guidance? Give one of these challenges a try:

Beginner: Open-Mike Night

  • What was the last hilarious story or joke you heard? Tell it.
  • Post a photo that never fails to crack you up.
  • Write a funny haiku about a current event.

Intermediate: National Tour

  • What was the last embarrassing thing that happened to you? Write about it, and find the funny in what happened.
  • We all have a quirky friend or relative — write up a character sketch of a funny person in your life.
  • Write about a comedy of errors — a time when things kept going very, hilariously, wrong. (Go fictional if you’d like!)

Advanced: Summer Comedy Blockbuster

  • Locate a small monkey, and post a video of it riding your dog.
  • Write about a sad or particularly difficult situation you faced, and find the levity in what happened or how you dealt with it.
  • Try your hand at satire — parody a public figure, expose the flaws in a situation or thing you find ridiculous — without devolving into outright mockery.

Ready to go? Make us laugh! Remember to tag your post with DPchallenge so we don’t miss a chuckle.

    1. I figured I better participate with something more than a smart a$$ comment.

I don’t have anything for Open Mike NIght, but being a Peeping Tom’s peep-ee is humorously embarrassing enough for the National Tour: http://feitcanwrite.com/2013/05/22/my-day-so-far/

As for the National Tour, I have a whole category of Reject satire (http://feitcanwrite.com/category/rejects/) as well as reviews of two of the stupidest products ever made (http://feitcanwrite.com/2012/12/31/the-stupidest-product-ever-made-or-how-to-waste-14-99/ and http://feitcanwrite.com/2013/04/29/the-second-stupidest-product-ever-made-or-how-to-ruin-your-smartphone/)

Okay, that’s enough shameless plugs for one comment.

  1. ~ Here’s an old post of mine, my About page. I am serious when I wrote it but friends and some bloggers told me and sent me a mail saying my About page is funny. What may be funny for you may not be funny for me and vice versa. But then I guess, if the general public thinks that something is funny, maybe it really is! I hope I’d get there someday. Here goes: http://thelurkerslist.wordpress.com/about/. Cheers! – Bliss, The Lurker’s List :)

      1. Thanks tric – I’m a runner myself, but haven’t had the chance to get out much lately. Perhaps the wife needs some practice…
