Perspective is important to every photographer. With the creative use of perspective narrowed down through the lens of a camera, a bit of gravel can look like a barren desert landscape or a few trees can trick the eye into thinking you’re deep in a centuries-old forest.

Who hasn’t seen real estate photos that inexplicably make a house and its rooms look several times bigger than they really are? Photos aren’t objective — they show what we want them to show.

This week’s photo challenge is about perspective: post a photo which is not what it seems to be. Make sure you share what the photo actually is of in its caption!

For those who are looking for an extra bit of challenge, show us two photos, each one showing a different angle or interpretation of the same subject:

A Modern Musketeer

The first photo makes me think of a world-weary man taking a rest. Maybe praying, maybe just staring into the void. But when you look at the second (uncropped) version, you see a much more complete (and possibly more amusing) view of the situation!

This is a great chance to put Cheri’s great cropping tips into practice. I used Adobe Bridge to crop this image, but fancy software isn’t required — WordPress.com has a crop tool built right in.

ashIn a post created specifically for this challenge, share a photo that shows us perspective.

We look forward to seeing the unexpected!

New to The Daily Post? Whether you’re a beginner or a professional, you’re invited to get involved in our Weekly Photo Challenge to help you meet your blogging goals and give you another way to take part in Post a Day / Post a Week. Everyone is welcome to participate, even if your blog isn’t about photography.

HERE’S HOW IT WORKS:

  1. Each week, we’ll provide a theme for creative inspiration. You take photographs based on your interpretation of the theme, and post them on your blog (a new post!) anytime before the following Friday when the next photo theme will be announced.
  2. To make it easy for others to check out your photos, title your blog post “Weekly Photo Challenge: (theme of the week)” and be sure to use the “postaday″ tag.
  3. Follow The Daily Post so that you don’t miss out on weekly challenge announcements, and subscribe to our quarterly newsletter — we’ll highlight great photos from the most popular challenge.
