Weekly Writing Challenge: And Now For Something Completely Different

For some of us, blogging is personal. Others are trying to educate or entertain; many more are hybrids. Yet we’re all storytellers. We all want to feel confident in what we’re offering when we hit “publish.” Creative Writing Challenges help you to push your writing boundaries, show off your blogging chops, and, hopefully, spark more post ideas.

To participate, tag your post with DPchallenge or leave a link to it in the comments. (It would also be great if you could link to this post to encourage people to take part–the more the merrier!)  Your post should be specifically written in response to this challenge; obvious attempts to link-bait will be deleted. We’ll keep an eye on the tag and highlight the week’s best posts on Freshly Pressed each Friday.

____________________________________________________

Last week, we highlighted Tim of Get Second Lunch, whose latest post had just been Freshly Pressed. One of the things that drew us to his post was his unique style—illustration-heavy posts that give him a great opportunity to put his own spin on familiar topics.

We certainly don’t want to suggest that everyone needs to start illustrating their posts; goodness knows The Daily Post would just end up awash in crudely-drawn stick figures. It did get us thinking, though: what if we occasionally pushed ourselves out of our comfort zones and tried an unexpected post style? It could be interesting to readers, but more importantly, it could help us expand our boundaries, push past writers’ block, and spark ideas for other posts.

So this week, we challenge you to step outside your blogging box and try something totally different:

  • If you normally write non-fiction, try fiction.
  • If you normally write fiction, try poetry.
  • If you normally post photos, try writing.
  • If you normally just write, try including photos.

Need a little more guidance? Check out these post types, and pick one. Don’t opt for something that seems immediately doable; go with something you’ll have to work at a bit:

  • Stream-of-consciousness
  • Short fiction
  • A day in the life
  • Instructions on doing/making something
  • Top ten lists
  • An open letter
  • An explanation of a topic you know a lot about
  • A walk down memory lane
  • A rant
  • News/current event analysis
  • A book, movie, or music review

The goal of this challenge isn’t to turn you into someone you’re not, but simply to see what you can take away from trying something completely new. The better we understand all the creative avenues open to us, the more effective we can be as writers, bloggers, and communicators.

At the end of your post, take a minute to reflect on the experience of creating it. Was it easier than you thought? Harder? Did you learn anything useful? Will you incorporate the new style into your repertoire? Would you try this exercise again with a different style?

We had a blast reading through last week’s Metaphor and Simile entries, and can’t wait to see what you come up with in another wide-open challenge!

  2. I’m in the middle of reading through all your posts now. I love how y’all embraced this challenge!

    • It really was a challenge, Michelle. In fact, it was so outside of what I wanted to do–I almost blew it off. I’m so glad I didn’t. I made a pact with myself to do each challenge you all throw our way . . . . and I’m now realizing that the more difficult–the better.

  3. Ok so I am finding these challenges quite fun to do. The last 2 have been a blast. Enjoy!

  5. Too late for this challenge, but I actually did this last week. For the first time ever, I wrote a post around a recipe. http://humanrightswarrior.com/2012/10/05/soup-season/ Interestingly, it pulled in a whole new blogging set – the foodies! Writing in a different way turned out to be a great way to meet new bloggers and gain some new followers. Thanks for the Weekly Challenge!

I NEVER do quizzes and I rarely every do lists. I know I should, and have been planning to work posts structured like that into my post rotation… so this challenge came at a good time. Here’s mine: http://pilotingpaperairplanes.wordpress.com/2012/10/12/running-pop-quiz/

Aloha, Everyone! It was my first challenge which was fun! And challenging! The biggest lessons learned were how to post photos more efficiently and how to link! I surprised even myself with how different the 5 posts were! Do see the last one, ‘Taking A Break From Mac Screen’ which I plan to do! http://heulu.wordpress.com

    A stream-of-consciousness post? That’s my blogs name! :)
(http://gailannov.wordpress.com/ ) Well, almost. I call it “Stream of Conscience” because “conscience” is shorter than “consciousness.”. Even though it doesn’t really make grammatical sense. :)

So glad I found this (via http://cloverandthyme.com/2012/10/11/leash-train-your-cat-in-7-excruciating-steps/ )

  10. Here is a post where I tried to do a mockfomercial. Something different than my usual discussing about infertility issues. Not sure if it was a success or not.

  12. I dont know if this post qualifies – I usually spend a lot of time on posts agonizing over them and in a baby-step toward an eventual stream-of-consciousness post, I gave myself a deadline and then just hit publish.

  25. I never thought I could write fiction. Who knows–maybe I still can’t. At least I took a stab at it.

FYI: As is typical for my blog, there is some erotica thrown in. So, you can decide if this is the kind of thing you wish to read or avoid.

I got the idea by imagining what would happen if a lover-friend moved in with me, I created a “me” kind of character, and thought about how this friend of mine would have behaved in the given situation. This is what happens:

  29. I don’t normally do much outside of poetry and short stories, so this came at a good time. It might be a tad late, but I’m linking to my review and recap of the first episode of The Secret Circle:

I really enjoyed this. Taking notes was the easy part: putting it into coherent sentences and paragraphs was the difficult :)
Looking forward to the next challenge!
