Weekly Writing Challenge: Mail It In

No matter how long you’ve been blogging, there is always more to learn. As part of the Weekly Writing Challenges, once a month, we’ll be highlighting a feature in the WordPress.com Dashboard and challenging you to incorporate it into your blog. We want to help you take full advantage of all the tools available on WordPress.com to make your blog the best it can be  — and to make your friends jealous of your web wizardry.

To participate, tag your posts with “DPchallenge” or leave a link to your post in the comments. Please be sure your post has been specifically written in response to this challenge; obvious attempts to link-bait will be deleted. We’ll keep an eye on the tag and highlight the week’s best posts on Freshly Pressed each Friday.

We spend a large portion of our days checking email, sending email, reading email, and following up on email. Suffice it to say that, for many of us, our email inbox is like a second home. It’s a place where we can communicate with old friends, update coworkers, or schedule meetings with colleagues. We share articles, ideas, emotions, and thoughts through our virtual mailbox.

Did you know that on WordPress.com you can send a post to your blog via your email address, without even visiting your Dashboard? With the Post by Email tool, you can draft a post, insert photos, and publish it to your site without ever leaving your mailbox. It works by creating a unique email address to which you can send your posts and that automatically converts your email into a regular, WordPress.com post. (Do note that it’s very important to keep this email private, since anyone with access to this email can publish to your blog.)

For this week’s challenge, use the Post by Email tool to create a new post touching on email, communication, and online correspondence. Go beyond how email may have changed how you communicate and dive into a specific example of a funny interaction, specific trends, or a detailed, comedic account of your email obsession. If you need a few ideas to get you started, try these on for size:

  • Take the challenge literally, and write an email for your blog. Your email can be to your favorite favorite teacher from grade school, or an open letter to that gigantic chain store you just can’t stand. Either way, write your post in email format, complete with salutations and small talk.
  • Talk about email itself. Do you roll out of bed each morning, dreading to check your inbox? Or do you thrive on the accomplishment of clearing your unread emails each day? For those of us who remember the days pre-email, we know not to take online communication for granted and remember both the pros and cons of relying on telephones, snail mail, and even spontaneous visits to a friend’s home as the only way to stay in touch.
  • Use a subject from your inbox to write a story. It can be a line from a ridiculous Groupon offer that prompts your tale, or a sincere message from a blog follower. Use whichever email subject that strikes your family as a writing prompt and go from there.

Don’t forget to add the post title shortcode to your email so that you can set your title before mailing in your post. To do this, add the following short code to the beginning of your email. Replace “Weekly Writing Challenge: Mail It In” with your preferred post title.

[title Weekly Writing Challenge: Mail it In]

For an advanced challenge, incorporate the other available Post by Email shortcodes so to embed photos, select your categories, and insert a slideshow without ever even visiting the WordPress.com Dashboard. Who knew that checking your email could help you with your daily posting?

Update: For those who would prefer to not email in their post, please feel free to use the prompts to respond to the challenge without using the Post by Email feature.

  2. Maybe because I’m in Blogger, but I don’t participate even in the interesting ones (like THIS) because I don’t understand about codes and linking it up. That said, I can tell you that on my blog, on my specific post about 9-11, there is a big part of the story that swings on an email I received – which I feel aligns to this post.

Excellent. I was composing an open letter in my head right before I read this. A perfect opportunity to actually write it and post!

  5. I’ll attempt this although I don’t understand the post by email thing very well. Worth a try!

  9. This is challenging. I still couldn’t set it up. I couldn’t find “Post by Email” on my Screen Options. I use the theme 2012. Could someone help me?

I’m trying to follow the instructions on http://en.support.wordpress.com/post-by-email/

    Thank you.

    September 17, 2012
    • You can set up your Post by Email email address via your My Blogs page, which you can get to by adding /wp-admin/index.php?page=my-blogs to your site URL (i.e., http://example.wordpress.com/wp-admin/index.php?page=my-blogs)

If you don’t see the Post by Email column, you’ll want to click on the Screen Options while on your My Blogs page. If you’re still having trouble, let me know!

      September 17, 2012
      • 1) I typed in my blog with your instructions above: http://janetsnotebook.com/wp-admin/index.php?page=my-blogs

        It didn’t work.

        2) For the benefits of many many Dailypost fans like me, please update your instructions on the support on Post by Email section.

Please use plain language that most of us might understand.

Please also make sure the steps are logical and easy to follow.

        3) I got to my Dashboard. I got to My Blogs.

From Step 2 onwards, nothing makes sense. “Make sure Post by Email is enabled in your Screen Options.”

I’d love to crack this problem. Please advise.

        September 17, 2012
      • And now there’s “/wp-admin/index.php?page=my-blogs” to add…while it was not stated in the first instructions.

        September 17, 2012
      • Okay? so we use the email address generated by WordPress to type a blog in our regular email….

How do you see that blog posting for the writing challenge???

        Very, Very confusing.

I made you a short video tutorial on how to enable it. If you follow the above instructions and don’t see “enable post by email” do what I’ve done here: http://screencast.com/t/wR96pzg4AK

    September 17, 2012
    • Step-by-step instructions are available here. If you’re having any trouble getting this set up, can you let me know where you’re running into trouble?

      September 17, 2012
      • My attempt on post by email was a failure.

        September 17, 2012
    • I noticed that the two sites linked in your Gravatar are not hosted on WordPress.com. Do note that this feature is available for WordPress.com users.

      September 17, 2012
  11. This question may have an obvious answer, but I was wondering if there is a requirement to fulfill this week’s writing challenge THIS week? Sometimes I get great ideas from these WordPress prompts and start working on the post, but by the time I finish, there is a new prompt. Do the older posts written to fulfill a “DPchallenge” still get considered for Freshly Pressed?

    September 17, 2012
    • We do check the DPChallenge tag every week and primarily bump posts from the current writing challenge. However, if your posts are in the tag for DPChallenge, we will see them :)

I have reservations about this feature due to the amount of spam that does the rounds.

    September 17, 2012
    • I too was worried about spam until I signed up with “Akismet”. Since I added it through my widgets…spam has been blocked twice. Once you have this you will notice that spam does not get through. Just thought I would comment on this, since you had the same reservations that I had when I started out blogging.

  28. Finally — it worked. I sent my very first post via email. I even included an image.

    1) Remember to add your post TITLE on the SUBJECT area.
    2) I failed the first time, as I put the Title in the main text area. So only the Title was shown.
    3) I’m not sure why the Category details didn’t show up. I had to sort out the category manually afterwards.Tags details showed up as they should.

I believe practice makes perfect. It’s worth a try. I’m pleased to have learn another WordPress trick!

    I’m happy now.

    September 17, 2012
  29. I have my Post by Email enabled but when I sent my email the body of my email didn’t come through. All I had was a post titled with the date and time and no body! Oh well, I just copied and pasted what I wrote. Here it is:

    http://thesullinsfamily.wordpress.com/2012/09/17/weekly-writing-challenge-mail-it-in/

    September 17, 2012
    • It happened to me too. 1) Did you put your TITIE in the email text area? 2) If so, move your TITLE to the email SUBJECT box. 3) Type your blog text in the email text area.

      This should work.

      September 18, 2012
      • Another thought – this may sound obvious, but did you add the shortcode [end] after the body of the email, or in the list order on the support page? The [end] shortcode removes everything that follows it, so if you (like me, initially) copied and amended the list of shortcodes then it’ll have ignored all your actual text.

  61. Ok so I am very new to blogging. I have only written for 3 weeks. I write a post weekly and for this week decided to do your challenge. I set up the email stuff. It took some searching and I got the email adress I needed. I posted my blog body into the email draft and my subject was the title of my blog entry and I did add the [....] around my title. I hit sent and it has not yet showed to my blog.
Did I do something wrong? Or is there possibly a delay in it posting from email? I have no problem posting it the regular way, but the challenge said to email it so that’s what I tried. I don’t want to post it and it show up an hour later from email as a double post.

  72. Hi Everyone!

Oh, that was soo cool! I have to say – sorry Erica – the instructions were a little unclear and it did take me awhile to figure it out.

For those of you still trying to figure this one out – here is what I did. Go to your Dashboard. There will be a category on the left side that says “My Blogs” click on that. It will then take you into a screen that has two options – Post By E-Mail and Post By Voice – click the “Enable” button under the Post By E-Mail. It will then generate an address for you. Use this address as the address you send the e-mail to. When you are composing your post you will need to add “short codes”. If you click on the Post By Email link Erica has in the second paragraph (it is underlined) this will take you to an instruction page that has all the links available. They are in brackets [ ]. Copy and paste what you want to include in your post – these will remain invisible. You MUST include the brackets. When you have included all the short links you want – edit them to reflect what you need. For example for the category short link I took out the X,Y,Z and put in its place blogging, writing. The post is now placed in these two categories on my blog. After I sent the email posting was immediate. It needed a little editing – but nothing big.

This is a really cool tool! Thank you Erica for encouraging me to step outside of my blogging comfort zone!

      • Hi Erica

No problem! I’m a newbie and a lot of the lingo is unknown to me. I decided after reading the comments that I wasn’t the only one having a little difficulty figuring this out. So, I just wrote down what I did step by step and I hope that helped others like me!

Love the Challenges – this is my 4th. If I get an idea for one – is that something I can submit to you? Besides the photo are there other challenges I can participate in? How would I find them?

  73. Done!
    http://wrightonthebutton.com/2012/09/19/down-to-1-unread/

I did miss the “preview” function though, because this is where make my final minor adjustments before posting.
I edited after posting this time.
One weird thing happened which has not happened to me before. Someone new “liked” my post within less than 30 seconds of it being posted. In less time than it took me to click on “Read Blog” after hitting the Send button on the e-mail. They must read incredibly quickly. Or have a “like” addiction.
In any case, I would be happy to post by e-mail again. I managed the insert hyperlink and insert image functions fine. So people, it is foolproof – I have just proven that!

  78. I wasn’t able to set up the Post By Email but I did take this Challenge as an inspiration to write an email-style blog post about something I am very passionate about. Would love to know what you think: http://seathechange.wordpress.com/2012/09/20/dear-world-from-the-world/

  81. I’m a little intimidated by words like “code” and such, but given the videos and step-by-step that others have posted, I might give this a shot this weekend.

I think the ability to do this is rad, whether I use it or not.

I did link back to this post but for some reason the pingback did not happen. Hope you find my post. I did tag it DPchallenge.

  85. Here’s my post:
    maddyspeaks.wordpress.com/2012/09/21/weekly-writing-challenge-mail-it-in-letters-to-the-future-1/

published it directly from email… the feature is super awesome!
There’s only one glitch.. I tried to schedule it for a few hours later (so I could log-in and preview it once before it gets published), but that didn’t happen.. I guess something to do with time zones..

    Anyhow, great feature! Cheers,

  87. I emailed mine in twice… Deleted one and had to edit the second to adjust the format and add a link to this page… This is the second time I’ve used the feature and, each time, my photo either didn’t appear or ended at the bottom of the page. It’s a great one for a quickie post but I’m not completely sold on it… TY for the suggestion as it got my creative juices flowing. Hope you like my entry: http://eof737.wordpress.com/2012/09/20/musings-ode-to-an-email-junkie/

    • Reading the comments above, I know Erica touched on this already… Again, the first step is to enable your email by post through your settings page, and once it generates a unique email address for you to use, then bingo, the rest is simple. I put my blog title/topic heading in my email Subject line, wrote the content in the body of my email, used some of the recommended codes (tags, ) and then added my special email address in the Send To box, hit send and voila, published! Sure there are a few things we need to fix but it does work. I sent mine twice because it took a bit long to get the notification that the post had been published. But it works! ;-)
The first time I used this feature was when the power went out on my street and my neighbor (he has a generator) let me use his iPad. I used the email feature because it was fast. I have to admit that like anything else, it does take making the effort to use it from time to time so each time we learn a bit more. This time around, I learned how to use the tags feature… So don’t give up fellow bloggers. You can do it and the instructions are there at the WP support site.
Best wishes and happy emailing! :-)
