Weekly Photo Challenge: Merge
This week’s photo challenge is guest hosted by Gary Ng of Gnostec Photography. Read on for more about this week’s theme and his photography tips!
Merge. The world is made up of many things. There is a saying that opposites attract, and this is true for relationships and other things. What about photography? Many surprises can come out of merging two different entities into one. Sometimes this fusion of the elements is what we call art.
For instance, try placing an object where it does not belong. Or, juxtapose two different objects. The statements they make together may be contradictory, but remember: break the rules and experiment. As for me, I love merging the arts, especially two distinctly different types of art. On one side, there is the performing arts—a ballerina, for instance—and on the other side, there is architecture.
Let’s see what you can MERGE in a photo!
Tip: The various genres of photography have different principles. For example, architecture photography is about capturing the lines, perspectives, light and shadows, details, and patterns of the design. In performing arts, it is about capturing a dancer’s fleeting moments and the incredible lighting (on stage). Capture some of these elements, and the arts can be merged beautifully.

Here’s my merge for this week’s challenge. http://wp.me/p2rsdj-1N
I’ve combined 3 pictures to make this one. Also did a lot of funky brush work in photoshop to get the final out put.
I especially dig the details in the sky. Cool interpretation of “merge.”
Thank you so mucn cheri. I’m glad you liked it
Here is my entry.
Merging photography and nature observation:
http://sebastienouvryphotographies.wordpress.com/2012/08/03/162365-3-aout-2012-welcome-to-the-jungle/
thank you for inspiring again!
Sure thing! Happy picture-taking.
my solution this week: a MERGE of religion, politics, art and high tech:
http://flickrcomments.wordpress.com/2012/08/17/weekly-photo-challenge-merge/
Oh, this is going to be fun! Truly inspirational. Ideas are already spinning.
Hooray! I’m glad the ideas are spinning and swirling.
Absolutely! I’m on it!
I have one for Merge but wanted to post another type “Merge”. The merging of many of my Photo Challenge photos as a tribute to the Weekly Photo Challenge.
It is so inspirational.
http://simplysage.org/2012/08/18/the-weekly-photo-challenge-sheer-joy/
This is my submission …Conflict of life… I hope you like it !!! http://rossellasphotography.wordpress.com/wp-admin/post.php?post=276&action=edit
I think there is a mistake in your posting. I’d love to see the picture but an error comes up when I click on the link.
Thanks Eleanor this is the right link http://rossellasphotography.wordpress.com/2012/08/09/conflict-of-life/
I love the way that the movement of these people makes them merge both into each other and the wall behind them, giving them a ghostly quality: http://thedailypost.me/2012/08/17/weekly-photo-challenge-merge/
I do, too. Definitely sense the fleetingness of the people juxtaposed against the staticness and hard surface of the wall. Cool!
The acrobat/circus/dancers/musicians company 7 Fingers certainly “merges” the arts.
http://cyclingrandma.wordpress.com/2012/07/27/summer-in-nyc-theater-yoga/
Here is my photograph. It’s consists of shards of glass that merge to form a modern building, in a very old city.
http://outandaboutinthecity.com/2012/08/17/weekly-photo-challenge-merge/
“Shards of glass that merge to form a modern building” = love this phrase. Poetic. Nice shot!
Thanks Cheri
Great challenge!
Here’s my entry. I love the challenge this week! http://cardinalguzman.wordpress.com/2012/08/17/weekly-photo-challenge-merge/
Glad you felt inspired! I like your takes on it, especially with the use of reflections.
Thanks Cheri. I forgot to add links to other bloggers and a trackback to WordPress, but I did it now.
Not digitally enhanced, just as taken, and not sure if it qualifies, but here it is…. http://justsnaps.wordpress.com/2012/08/17/weekly-photo-challenge-merge/
It’s not a requirement to digitally enhance. I think you can interpret the theme in many ways — at first glance, it looks like the statue is floating in air! Interesting find.
A real challenge, thank you!
Though I didn’t combine different photos or edit the image, I still think this post matches the challenge. And I hope you think so too!
This week’s contribution:
http://drieskewrites.wordpress.com/2012/08/17/weekly-photo-challenge-merge/
Marion — “merge” can be achieved within a single photo for sure (as Gary did above). The wood-sparkle juxtaposition certainly reflects the theme in its own way!
And if you are entering one dodgy picture, why not enter another too. Just as it comes….. http://chittlechattle.com/2012/08/17/weekly-photo-challenge-merge/
Here’s my take

Here’s my weekly submission to the current challenge. One is a piece of art. The other is a piece of candy. You decide.

Ha, nice shot with the balloons as heads. Neat interpretation of the theme.
thank you Cheri..
Lovely, Ileana. What a wonderful capture!
I like this one! Great take on the theme.
Thanks, Catherine!

Death merges with art????? Not really gruesome!http://annarashbrook.wordpress.com/2012/08/17/travel-challengemerge/
Oh my! This one will definitely be a challenge. May take me awhile to come up with just the right photo for this. Thanks for this week’s theme and for the great explanation of “merge” by Gary.
Looking forward to viewing your entry! I have offered a “valse des fleurs.”

Oh look! Another fancy entry for this weeks Photo Challenge! Ta-da!!!!
http://whataboutsteak.wordpress.com/2012/08/17/weekly-photo-challenge-merge/
Ta-da! Here’s mine – not sure if it really qualifies as I didn’t merge any photos together:
http://laavventura.wordpress.com/2012/08/17/weekly-photo-challenge-merge/
Hi Jennifer — while some entries here have indeed merged two (or more) photos together, that’s certainly not a requirement! The beauty of this challenge is that the theme can be interpreted as you wish
Ciao Cheri,
Thank you for stopping by. It was a difficult challenge that’s for sure! Nice one. As I said in the post, I haven’t editing software to actually merge photos together, I’ve looked and tried and it won’t allow me. Maybe I’m overlooking something.
I like to call this photo: Merging midnight reality with dancing shadows!
Two ta-da’s! We must be pleased with our submissions!

Glad that you were challenged
I like your interpretation of “merge.”
This is tricky.
Thank you Cheri, this was a real challenge
I mistook ‘merge’ for ‘blending into the background’. But this probably fits your criterion: http://theurgetowander.com/2012/08/17/weekly-photo-challenge-merge/
An iconic sight for “merge”! Nice choice. And thank Gary for the challenge — I tossed out a few themes to start, and he thought up this one

Here is my entry. I do not want to layer pictures on top of each other, so i choose for this one. A painting of a building in another building. http://chrisbreebaart.wordpress.com/2012/08/17/weekly-photo-challenge-merge/
Some people chose to combine multiple images, yes. I like your interpretation and use of just one (Gary did this as well, above).
Thank you for your reply! very welcome

The composition/lines in this are powerful. I think of “old and young” here, but also a sense of connection between the two because of the way they’re both holding the flag. Nice interpretation.
