What Makes a Post Freshly Press-able? Literature and Libation
Every day, 19 WordPressers are featured on the Freshly Pressed section of WordPress.com. And every day, many more wonder, “What do I have to do to get Freshly Pressed?”
Well, it’s time to reveal what the folks who push the launch button are thinking. Each week, a member of our editorial team will do a close-up on one post and why we thought it was Press-worthy. We hope we can provide insight into the process and give you tips and tools to make your blog the best it can be.
___________________________________________________________________
Before we delve into today’s post, there are a few preliminaries to get out of the way:
- We don’t actually get to push a launch button, although that would be awesome.
- There are half a million of you and a handful of us, and we’re scouring the blogosphere day in and day out. If we don’t find you, it’s nothing personal – promise. Keep writing, and we’ll keep looking.
- We’re real people with different perspectives and tastes, so we’re drawn to different content. And we love feedback, so if a Freshly Pressed post feels really off-base to you, let us know!
- We do not accept bribes, although that may just be because no one has offered us enough gold bullion… yet.
Last week, Oliver at Literature and Libation made it to Freshly Pressed with Craft and Draft: Character Counts. If you haven’t wandered over there to read it, you should remedy that immediately (especially if you’re a fiction writer).
Go ahead, I’ll wait.
There are lots of reasons to love this post, but the big three are:
- The content was informative and entertaining.
Lots of Freshly Pressed readers are themselves writers, and we thought this post – a tutorial on the mechanics of character development, with homemade Lego illustrations – would speak to you. The figures morphed as the easy-to-follow post took us though each step of the character creation, refinement and revision process.
The accompanying commentary was clear, well written, and made us laugh hard enough to shoot coffee out of our collective nose. On his newly-born character, left, he writes:
I mean, it is kind of identifiable as some sort of humanoid, but there are some major problems here. One: his period-inappropriate tri-corn hat is on fire. Two: He has two heads, one of which is completely black and has no face…
This is an extreme example, but my point remains. It is very difficult to properly build your character the first time around. He’s going to come out with conflicting motivations, bad dialogue, missing limbs, and possibly even a flaming hat.
See what we mean?
- The photos were genius and filled out the content.
Many posts can benefit from an image; they add another layer of texture to your words. Photos also help break up a longer post, and are useful for clarifying complex or intangible points. Oliver’s Lego shots took the potentially ephemeral process of developing a fictional character and grounded it in something nearly all of us can identify. Plus, they were cute as heck.
- The organization and layout made reading easy.
Reading dense blocks of text is difficult enough on the printed page, and even more so on a screen. Smaller paragraphs help readers scan more easily, while headings make a longer post digestible and keep readers from getting lost in your content.
Oliver took full advantage of both guidelines. Paragraphs were short and focused on a single point. Headings broke the process down into four discrete components.
What did you think of this pick? Will you be reading along with Craft and Draft?

My FP had no humor in it that I was aware of, but I suppose information articles are good too?
Humor isn’t mandatory – just good, engaging writing.
How do we know you are real people? And if you are indeed “real” people…. how much (exactly) is “enough gold bullion”? Not that I’m offering….just curious.
I have found wonderful blogs to follow through FP. So thank you for the good choices!
Hmm… I can only vouch for myself. I suppose my colleagues could be automatons. As for how much gold is enough, you’ll just have to make an offer and see.
I’m too stingy with my gold bullion. And I think this may be a trick.
But keep up the good deeds WPFPers.
Instead of a gold bullion (What the heck is that?) What about a nice bar of dark chocolate? In my mind, they’re equal.
I’ll give you a bar of dark chocolate for a bar of gold….
Deal!
(Now, where can I get a bar of gold…)
My blog was Freshly Pressed on Nov 16, 2010 and it boosted my readership by a gazillion! I said it before and I’ll say it again – thank you!
How long did the surge it last?
It’s still going! I post every Tuesday (sort of like “Tuesdays with Laurie”) and each post gets an average of 4,000 hits.
Thanks for the tips! Being Freshly Pressed would be like a dream come true
but, hey, I’m still growing as a blogger. I’ll just have to be patient.
I have known many bloggers who started out blogging but then lose interest pretty quickly. Just because they lost patience. One must realize that it takes time for a blog to mature. The blogs that we have seen, admired, and inspired us to blog have been really old ones and those bloggers have been blogging since ages. Patience is the key. Don’t loose out hope, and you’ll realise that Freshly pressed is just as close as your level of patience to build your blog.
I can’t second this enough. It took me years of weekly posts to really find my groove. I had years of ~15 hits a week, but I just kept plugging away, for the sake of my writing and well…fun. In that time, I matured, my writing matured, and my readership grew. It’s like fine wine or something.
Amen to that
This gives me hope!! I also have to keep remembering: as wonderful as it would be to be Freshly Pressed, & to have bazillions of readers, I am writing MindMindful for ME (but…..I’d still like to have bunches of readers ………….)
The main purpose why i chose to blog was to make sure that I share my art with the world, beyond the boundaries of social networks. And I also know that it’s not going to be easy and will take a lot of time. I think there’s a purpose behind the whole process taking time. When you start blogging, you are new, you need ideas, you need inspiration, which definitely lacks in every bloggers earliest posts. At such an infant stage if the blogs get a whole lot of attention i’m sure that is not gonna create a good impression about the bloger to the users. A blog “has” to mature over time, as it happens, even the number of readers automatically will.
I can’t hear this enough. I’ve been struggling to find my voice and find that it’s not that I don’t have one, but actually have too many going at once!
Well, sorry to tell you, I’ve been blogging for 7 years now, and I still only get an average of 30 hits a day and I still find it hard to find things to write, so I guess I must just be rubbish at blogging! Not entirely sure why I still do it…
I enjoy it and have had little glimmers of success. I think when I stop thinking about how it will be received, I’ll probably find it a lot easier. Like the original post, I have a heap of started entries that sound like rubbish to me, but others might enjoy. I thought the condom bit was hilarious…so you never know.
I’ve found that blogs that focus on one particular topic, or interest tend to find “success” a lot more easier than the ones which are diverse. I think you should try to figure out what it is that intrigues you the most. Something in which you feel you are the best when you do it. I’m sure you will find a change.
Totally agree – to quote Woody Allen “Eighty percent of success is showing up”… blogging is indeed a marathon not a sprint, keep plugging!
Thanx 4 the tips i want 2 be on freshly pressed
Not with this spelling.
I know I’ll never be FP because my blog covers humor, human interest stories, information, memoirs, and fantastic nature posts from the redwoods.
Your examples are great. However, I was shocked to find one blogger recently being FP. It was her very first post, and I thought that was a little unfair to the rest of us.
I do have a peek every now and then at the FP choices and sometimes am bored or disappointed. I can be disappointed in my own selections, too.
I wish more good bloggers would respond to comments.
I’d love to have more readers. I need the feedback.
About the blogger that got fp’ed on the first post, I’m not sure if that’s a good thing to happen. I would collapse with a heart attack if that had happened to me. Mostly because of worry, knowing that now I have a lot of eyes watching me.The main purpose why i chose to blog was to make sure that I share my art with the world, beyond the boundaries of social networks.
You have excellent points to think about. I think that it would have been a terrible thing for me to get FP right away. I would have felt very pressured and then disappointed if folks didn’t stick around, or I didn’t fulfill their expectations.
As to ideas, inspiration, I have no lack. I’ve been saving so much over the years, inside my head, and on scraps of paper, notebooks, that I have to hold back, so as not to over post, if there is such a thing.
I agree and thank you sincerely for the comments. You are correct, a blog does have to mature over time, and I believe I’m doing so, as I’ve noticed what people are most interested in, how they seem to drop by when I write a little life story.
You write as if you’re speaking, and I appreciate that.
I write because I “have to.” I threaten to stop every now and then, and suddenly, I’ll shout, “I have to write something!” The somethings are already swirling around in my head.
Very supportive, you. I appreciate it.
I have seen some very average posts on your list, but this one is exceptional and totally deserves to be freshly pressed! Thanks for the lead.
Agree. Whatever happened to the Freshly Pressed era of Joy Victory’s editorial stint? You have Only eleven picks for FP at the time but ALL were truly exceptional.
I have half a chocolate cake and an almost full bottle of Pepsi with your name on it.
Now you’re speaking my language.
And they said Mel Gibson was the only one who knew what women wanted.
I wish there was a ‘like’ button on wordpress. I would totally ‘like’ your comment.
Haha thanks!
I would totally ‘like’ your reply.
Not even if the bribes are chocolate in nature?
A Lego parrot is a thing to behold!
Yes I agree with Madhu, I have come across some AMAZING posts through FP but many of them I felt were average. I follow some talented writers on WP but none of them were freshly pressed. Thanks for this post, I hope to get Freshly Pressed some day. It’s on my bucket list.
Feedback, please! We’re definitely interested in what does or does not ring your bell.
Most times, I’ve ended reading an FP post laughing through snorts or feeling some sort of inspiration….sometimes it’s just like meh. I’ve gotta say that the writing is excellent in all posts you pick but the content is not always that interesting. It may be a personal thing to me and not a reflection on you in any way…I can’t describe it without putting someone on the spot. I want to read a post that gives the reader something, something that resonates and lasts. Not just an account of an average “what” that the writer happened to do and write about and it’s not giving the reader anything. I don’t know if i’m making sense now
Freshly Pressed is good fun and I always find something worthwhile to read. It’s especially fun when it just happens to be a blog that I’m already following. Keep up the great work and maybe some day I’ll make the cut. *Fingers Crossed*
Cheers!
G-LO
Would you like us to point you to our favourite bloggers to see if they could be freshly presed?
oops
‘pressed’
Sure – feel free to leave us links, and we’ll check ‘em out.
Done… I have left three at the end of the comments so far!
Ah ha!!! You answered a question that I actually had a few days ago. I was going through the Freshly Pressed posts and was looking at them like: “How the heck did this make it?” Now I know I will probably never be freshly pressed…. Hahahahaha…
Never say never!
I know I’ll never be FB and I’m okay with it. I have to be me, and I’m not ordinary or trendy or mainstream. I’m an oddball.
As long as you are being you that’s all that matters.
How do you review posts? Do you really go through and try to visit everyone? If so, wow! Do you all wear glasses from looking at the computer screen 23/7? Kudos!!!
daisy
I’d love to say that we try to visit *everyone*, but we do sometimes need to sleep. We try to get to as many folks as we can every day, though, looking for a mix of topics and voices that we think y’all will respond to. And yes, several of us wear glasses.
Good one Daisy. Like you, I am always in wonder how they manage to pick The best of 421,846 bloggers, 1,093,040 new posts, 1,282,915 comments, & 276,212,875 words posted today on WordPress.com.
:O
Hi,
I am glad I found this post because I wanted to say THANK YOU SO MUCH ever since my post ‘Is Blogging Addictive’ was freshly pressed on 25 July, only two months after I started blogging! To say that I was surprised would be understatement. I was ecstatic. Not because I thought it will bring loads of readers (I did not know that would happen) but because you liked my post! The post I wrote straight from the heart and without any pretence. As it turned out many people found that speaks to them, resonates with them. And that is the biggest prize anyone who puts words out to people can hope for. That those words travel and touch others. For that I am truly grateful!
Daniela
Good evening, Wordpresidents. I’d just like to thank you for Freshly Pressing my scribblings the other day.
It was only upon reading the email that it dawned on me that there’s a team of you diligently sifting through every word we write. I believe the great philosopher Spiderman once mused ‘With great power comes great responsibility’, and whilst it must surely be worth it for every glint of gold you find, I can’t say I envy the reems of ramblings you have to go through to determine what they might be.
Thank you for your dedication to what must be all-too-often a thankless task.
I agree with almost everything you said. the only thing i disagree with was the fact that it was in fact spiderman’s uncle Ben who said it. Spiderman simply recalled the statement often.
Ah, my mistake – kudos to you, sir! You are clearly a much greater nerd than I, Eric. (This might seem insincere – my intentions are good!)
One might argue that Stan Lee was the great philosopher in this case, but saying that wouldn’t be as funny.
Again I agree! haha. I think Ben said it. Stan just put it to paper for the world. (because it is all real)
What a ruddy nice thing for Stan to do!
indeed.
My topics change on a daily basis, and my writing is not all that great. haha. guess I will have to pray someday to be freshly lightly leaned on, instead of pressed…
A dear friend, for whom I cannot help but be happy because of our admiration for each other, was FPed not long ago. My friend does not use humor, does not really inform about anything except daily life, and that, I think I can say, is not well-written, and I think anyone would say it is not well-thought-out. It’s just musings. Few visitors. No real content. No theme except, maybe, self. Etc. Sometimes the photos are rather wowie — other times so-so. Same for grammar and spelling.
I was very happy for my friend and I thank you ALL for noticing the bullion I sent on the behalf of that friend’s site.
Also totally excited to find Oliver!
We love a good musing; seemingly random musings are so often relatable. I do feel I should point out, however, that none of the bullion reached my pockets.
I’ve been looking for this answer a long time. This was insightful, I’ll take note!
I was thinking about this the other day as I was preparing a large sack labeled “not a bribe, bribe.”
Thanks for this and hopefully the donkey with the sack makes it your way!
:]
Geez…….
Right.
my very first blog piece at my second blog internetbrainchild.wordpress.com was recently freshly pressed. A good friend of mine also happened to get his first post of a new blog pressed. This makes me think that newer blogs are more likely to be FP?
Also, going off the content of the posts I have seen, international appeal seems to be preferable to commentary on national interest stories. Would this be a fair assumption?
Nope, we don’t search by date, we search by tags. (For more info, check out http://en.support.wordpress.com/five-ways-to-get-featured-on-freshly-pressed/). I also wouldn’t try to gauge what types of topics will get you pressed; write passionately about whatever *you* care about.
Regarding #3 above about offering feedback to FP, I can attest to this one: I was STUNNED by what I considered some particularly “off-base” content in a post a few weeks ago, brought it to an admin’s attention, and *poof*…it was gone within minutes.
Thank you for listening to the meager masses. I had never been shocked before by an FP post…but I was this time. And anyone who’s ever read my blog knows: I’m not even easily shockable. (Though I clearly make up words. Like shockable. But whatever.)
Thanks for the insight here — I’m excited about the new 19 times/day “Pressing” possibilities!
I hope to have my spoken word featured one day…until then I’ll just keep posting!
Do you speak as you write? That is, write down what you’re saying? Do you speak in public?
I speak in public…I speak as I write and commit it to memory…I love to capture my thoughts…I get the most original work that way.
Interesting. I enjoyed speaking in public and entertaining, so I have no problem with it. I just wondered, because as I’m writing, I’m actually talking in my head or speaking out loud!
Like your style!
It’s been a huge thrill to be chosen for Freshly Pressed four times. I’m in awe of how much content you’re wading through daily to make these picks.
A few thoughts on the FPs you choose, in general…it seems (?) you’ve finally relented and allowed some tougher/more political posts into that mix, and I’m really glad. It looked, for a while, that only non-controversial photo/travel/food posts were being chosen, and it felt a little safe and predictable. I like the international mix very much as well.
We certainly want to make sure we’re offering posts that will have broad appeal, but edgier posts – as long as they’re well-written and not defamatory – are great too. We want to inspire others to write as much as we want to highlight those of you doing good work. In any case, glad you’re liking the mix!
Once you click on a FP entry, also check on some of their prior and later posts. You’ll find some gems that few others have found.
I have discovered quite a few favorite blogs via FP — a recent discovery is Small Farms Matters Big. That guy can write. FP is a great WP feature — really makes it feel like a community out here in cyber space. Nice job.
Looks like I’ll have to put in more photos if I want to make it to Freshly Pressed someday.
Photos are great, but not mandatory. We know there are some folks who are all about the written word.
that sounds like me. after all, my blog and tag name is ramiungarthewriter!
It’s funny how Freshly Pressed is the unattainable prize, that I wonder about every day, even though a month ago I had no idea what it was. I have found so many wonderful things to see and read here, only some of them being through FP. I search topics as well. I do read the Freshly Pressed blogs every day though, and I hate to say it, but I must agree with some previous posters that I am surprised at some of the entries chosen. It makes me think that my chances of being pressed for something really good that I worked hard toiling over aren’t much higher than for a piece I splurted out with a hang over that I personally feel is crap, just to say I wrote something everyday. Time will tell I guess. Over all, though, I love the idea, and it does bring many wonderful writers the attention they deserve.
Agree entirely.
Well I’m a WP newbie, never been FP but that’s okay.. I still keep reading so many other wonderful blogs and that makes it A-O-K!!!
I agree with some of the others who commented that posts are just average sometimes in FP.
Also, I know that you favor writers on WP, but there are some amazing artists and I would like to see more of thier work in FP (I’m not talking illustration)… the “art” tag is always high up there in number of posts so more artists, please!
I started a second blog and featured my art and some children’s writing. Even my own readers weren’t looking… It’s a tough place for art.
Just curious: I follow one blog in particular that I think is genius, but hasn’t been Freshly Pressed (I don’t think). But, I think her best post ever was a few months back. Do you only “press” truly ‘new’ stuff?
Not at all; as mentioned above, we search tags in the reader. And you should feel free to share links with us.
I feel your pain! There are so many great daily posts on WP that it must be near impossible to choose favourites (I find it hard enough to choose my faves and I don’t follow all 4,000+ of them!)
Keep up the good work
Feedback sent
It’s always great to see how you pick FP posts.
Response sent
Ah, I was Freshly Pressed once. It’s kind of like that time I got an upgrade to Business Class on a trans-oceanic flight – now every time I get on the airplane, I know exactly what I’m missing. But I soldier on… Thanks for a look at the process!
interesting!
im a newbie though:/
Do you mind checking out my site http://www.candelacouture.com, its new and your feedback would mean the world to me!!
Just want to say I’m the host of 4 different blogs on WordPress, and I do not feel at all insulted or hurt that you haven’t chosen one of my “offspring” for ‘Freshly Pressed.’ I do realize that you have so many thousands to consider every single week that it’s impossible for your staff to even visit all the good ones, let alone spend enough time on them to choose them for promotion. The way I see it, I have instituted each of my blogs because I believed it was the right thing to do for my own reasons, and I write every article because I want to do so and believe each one will bless the right person at the right time. I don’t write to get “Freshly Pressed.” I write for my readers and for myself. So you can rest assured that there are many of us out here who don’t get up tight about the “Freshly Pressed” choices. However, I think it’s nice of you to offer these insights in order to encourage bloggers in a number of ways. Keep up the good work.
Thru freshly press I have found some gems, thank you. What a cute mug (is that mug in you gravatar?), would offer a bullion, but only have coffee and some pastries
,
It is indeed a mug, a mug to which I am very attached
Sorry my comment went to your reply, I do not know what happen, maybe is sign, will check all four of your blogs!
No problem. I just posted a comment on a friend’s blog, and right in the middle of my writing it, my computer sent my page somewhere else and posted my totally incomplete comment before I was ready. I don’t know what happened either. Sometimes I wonder if computers really do have a mind of their own.
Good – we hope you’re all blogging because you love to do it, and not with the hopes of being Freshly Pressed. We’re starting this series both to give folks a look into the inner workings, but also because the best FP posts have lessons that can help any blogger make the most of their site.
This is a great idea for a Daily Post series. It’s interesting to read your comments and thoughts in choosing blog posts to highlight. I regularly read the blogs chosen to be honored with Freshly Pressed status and have discovered so many good ones that I now follow. I hope to be among them, someday, but meanwhile enjoy all the creativity out there.
Thanks for sharing a little behind-the-scenes insight.
I agree with the reasons for why that post was chosen, although I agree with the others who say some FP posts kind of leave me scratching my head as to what the criteria was for choosing them. On the other hand, like you said, those who are choosing it have a variety of tastes among them so what appeals to them may not appeal to me.
Have definitely come across some good reads, so keep up the great selections!
Btw, did it change from 10 to 19 FP posts per day?
It did; we upped it so we could highlight more of your great work. As we continue this series (it’ll be a weekly feature), you should find yourself scratching your head less frequently.
Awesome!
Well, I humbly invite you over to my neck of the WP neighbourhood any time you please
Regarding bribes — do you have any sort of range or guidelines?
I’m betting chocolate speaks louder than bullion . . .
Cool people from WordPress, I just want you to know that I love all of you and that I enjoy your every Freshly Pressed edition! Keep up the good work. And I’ll write in my little corner, work at my 8 hour day job and earn enough “gold bullions” to invite you guys for tea sometimes and make a proper offer! Wait, or are you guys more of a coffee bunch? Let me know!
I would love your job, and I too have found many bloggers to follow on FP
That’s really helpful – it’s good to know how other people do things right. I’ve been blogging on and off for years, but only started on WP a while ago. Let’s see how things work out here. I certainly already met a few great characters. It seems to be a nice community here, where one can learn a lot
We think the community is pretty nifty, ourselves. Welcome!
Interesting you guys wrote this blog because I had been wondering about this for some time.
It did bug me that I wasn’t rising up the ranks by being featured on the Freshly Pressed page. Even after racking up likes for a blog or short story I posted but I resolved those grievances by crying myself to sleep after eating a big bowl of ice cream.
After two plus years of blogging, I don’t expect I will ever be Freshly Pressed. I don’t have that kind of luck. (How else would you describe the confluence of the right post, right tag, right place, and right time?!) Of course, after a blogger has been Freshly Pressed once, they have an increased chance of being Freshly Pressed numerous times. Luck breeds luck!
No, my lack of luck is summed up by Calvin: “You know, Hobbes, some days even my lucky rocket ship underpants don’t help.” ― Bill Watterson
Like what Michelle W. stated, never say never. But I believe you are so right about a couple of things: No. 1 — LUCK. Because aiming for FP is like waging for the lottery. No. 2, about the “increased chances” — maybe so. Because once you make it to FP you’ll get an email which says “You are now part of an ELITE group etc.” Wow. Elite.
FYI, you now get a very different email with no mention of your elite status. Which means no Sky Club passes or priority boarding, but them’s the breaks.
Margie,
I have been blogging here on WordPress for two plus years as well, as this was the first time I got Freshly Pressed. Michelle said it higher up in the comments; it isn’t the age of the blog, but the quality of the post they review.
I say this: don’t blog to be Freshly Pressed, blog to blog. To write. To create. To have fun. Sure, it’s an awesome little feature that gives you a great little ego boost, but it shouldn’t be the goal of your craft, I don’t think.
This, exactly.
I agree – if my goal in blogging was to be Freshly Pressed, I would have quit long ago.
Huh. Before this, I thought you had to sacrifice a virgin to volcano gods before you came even close to getting Freshly Pressed.
Colour me surprised! (Incidentally, the colour of surprise is purple.)
We prefer burnt offerings of livestock placed at the foot of Mt. Olympus, and then we’ll *think* about considering you
Great. The people running Freshly Pressed happen to be Olympian Gods.
This is worse than the time I discovered George Lucas was secretly Cthulhu.
avery: i laffed out loud when i read your comment.
as i was just listlessly sifting thru’ the whole thing, still … if i make it to the end i’ll post something…
i’m afraid, tho’, that CTHULHU LIVES !
Oh well, haven’t we all discovered FP at some point?
http://wingrish.wordpress.com/2012/03/13/thoroughly-wordpressed/
Most importantly, check out the advantages of NOTmaking it to FP –
http://wingrish.wordpress.com/2012/03/30/10-advantages-of-not-being-freshly-pressed/
Reblogged this on Brand Versus.
So far I have not used anything but my own photos, creations, and artwork- and some of my daughter’s. Sometimes I don’t have time to make something. Is it better to use a photo from a google search and give credit or go without a pic?
I highly recommend using Wikimedia Commons when you don’t have your own photos to use. It’s a giant photo library that is free for anyone to use; photographers upload stock images and you simply search for an image, download, and pop in your post. It’s always good to cite that it came from Wikimedia Commons, but other than that, you’re good to go!
You can use photo’s of me wearing a Mexican wrestling mask if you want. No credit required for such awesomeness.
If the situation arises, I’ll hit you up!
I used to use GIS images, but eventually found it was a lot more fun to make/take my own. I pose beers in ridiculous places, often in my neighbors yards while they’re not home. I also take pictures of Lego men on my desk at work, during my lunch break, much to the confusion of my coworkers.
It’s so easy to just Google and Save As. Creating your own images takes creativity and patience and the result, I think, is a much more personalized and engaging blog experience.
That’s how I have kind of felt in my short time of blogging. I am learning some new programs and more about my iPad as a result, which brings me joy in itself.
Along with what other folks have already said, you can also search for Creative Commons images to use. As for whether or not to include an image at all, I’d say that depends on whether/how it contributes to the post – be open to how an image can enhance things, but don’t stick one in just because you feel like you need to to increase your Freshly Pressed odds.
Yeah. I’m waiting.
Loved the post, thanks for bringing it to my attention. Ummm, no gold bullion, how about a red velvet cupcake, smothered in gold dust? Yes? No? You cam PM me
What a great idea for a blog series: dissecting the Freshly Pressed posts to show why they were chosen. I bet this will be extremely popular with the WordPress community.
I was Freshly Pressed in June, and all I can say is thank you! I was so honored and unbelievably surprised. You truly helped me get my blog off the ground, and I can’t thank the team enough!
I’m pretty new to wordpress (2 days actually) and I’ve written 3 articles already. But I’m not pressing on the freshly pressed button yet. I hope to refine my work so it becomes worthy of publishing. I’ve got time and patience.
Lucky you. FP is a curse. Once in, you’ll want more
Loved this. Thanks
Thank you for the advice; I appreciate it and your sense of humour as well! I am still a new blogger (as of a week) and truth be told, I blog more for myself than for an audience, but if I ever make it to Freshly Pressed some year down the line, I will be honoured. Thank you for all the work you put into this site, I have had a wonderful first week blogging here!
Does posting at a particular time of day have anything to do with it? I post EVERY day for almost two years -a great blog about parenting, kids, drinking, and murder (sort of) and I notice an uptick when I post in the morning as opposed to late at night.
Nope, not at all.
This may sounds like a dumb idea but I think while a panel picks who will be freshly pressed it might work to have a month long vote in kind of feature where other bloggers nominate the bloggers they like and love for the honor. I think that way you get a little bit of feedback and its further strengthens the WordPress community in many ways
Not dumb at all – we’re working on ways to have community involvement. You’re totally right about the impact on the community. Great minds!
My first nomination:

My second nomination:

And my third

humour, jokes and much much more, with a keen following
I do not have the slighest bit of doubt, “My blog will never be picked for “Freshly Pressed.” It basically comes down to the signs of the times, and I as an age 70 writer of my blog, do not fit perfectly into our liberal minded socieity. I come from a generation of those who believe in working hard and earning our way in our socieity in America. Where does a WordPress Blog, that is spiritually-centered in written poetry fit into WordPress? The answer “No Where” in a society that placed an individual such as Obama in office as President of our country. Defeat Obama in November 2011!
Whether or not you feel like you fit into our liberal-minded society, you fit into the WordPress community. We try to showcase diverse voices every day, and that includes people from all places on the political spectrum.
Michelle,
Thank you for taking time to share your thoughts in relating to my posting. Blessings in your journey.
John
I think my blog and writing style are pretty deeply rooted in what most people would consider “fringe” (I discuss dragons and wizards and pirates more often than not) and yet I’ve found a great home here on WordPress. Sure, not every reader is going to love every sentence you pen, but if you write with passion and skill (no matter the topic) you’ve got just as much chance as anyone.
Don’t get too mentally mired in what is popular or how you fit it. I just read some of your poetry and thought it was quite moving, even though I am not a spiritual person.Just keep doing what you love; fame and glory finds those who aren’t chasing it.
P.S. There are still some hard working young Americans too.
Oliver,
Thank you for rendering your kind words and personal sharing. Blessings in your individual journey.
John
I’ve always thought FP blogs was very randomly picked…and this post doesn’t convince me fully…yet! So I do look around for blogs to follow on my own though…through specific tags etc. In a way making my own FP list I guess
It looks like I am already doing this. Maybe soon I will be Freshly Pressed!
It would be a dream come true for this Nebraska girl
. Thanks so much for the tips!
Out of over 600 FB friends, only 1 friend blogs regularly (my brother, on WP, too) and a few more sporadically. So, I go to Freshly Pressed to read some good articles. Thank you for the time and effort. I don’t have to search for good blogs myself. You already pick the best ones.
I still wish I could be FP’ed someday.
I will work more hard for that! Come on!
My nomination:
xmscan.wordpress.com
a blog that have a good taste for tech!
Thank you for your post.
Whereas what you mention is true for the English version of WordPress (I’ve found loooads of good blogs through FP) it is certainly not the case for the Spanish one. The FP tend to be the same bunch of bloggers every week. What is more, I only found once a good post through the Spanish FP. Since then, this blog gets FP every single week even if their posts are not as good as that one (in my humble opinion). I know this is a matter of taste but when I compare the English-language FP posts and the Spanish ones I can’t help thinking that somebody is not following the rules. Unless non-English posts have different ones, of course!
I just would like that the FP in Spanish shows posts as good as the English version does. Is that asking for too much? Quality is there. I’ve seen it!
Unfortunately, we aren’t able to give Spanish-language posts the same kind of individual attention – yet. So the process there *is* a bit different, and much more dependent on statistics. Creating an engaging non-English FP experience is definitely on the to-do list.
I can understand that but it would be nice to see different blogs being FP since it’s always the same ones. Glad to read this will change at some point though… hopefully, if the item is not too low on WordPress to-do list haha.
Thanks for the reply.
Happy Friday!
FP or not, I don’t think it’s physically possible for a ‘handful of real people’ to go through what half a million bloggers write every single day, so yea..I’d say a fantastic job indeed by your team
On an average, I do enjoy reading at least 16 of the FP articles. Thanks peeps!
16 out of 19 ain’t bad! We’ll take it!
I have no money, but here, have a green shiny virtual apple (no euphemism.)
Very helpful, informative and inspiring. Thanks

your number 4 made me laugh! : )
Reblogged this on cultureyears and commented:
Wordpress bloggers need to check this out noW! somr insight into getting noticed by wordpress.
All I think of when I read “Freshly Pressed” is the line “and the napkins freshly pressed..”
I then proceed to sing the entire song list of Beauty and the Best as theatrically as possible.
Inside my head, anyway.
I don’t think people should worry to much about being FP’d, I was a year ago and it was thrilling for that night but that dies down fairly quickly and of the new followers I received as a result most of their blogs are defunct now, and probably only a few stuck around and contribute from being up there.
You’ll garner more success from following blogs you like and engaging in conversation with them and building up rapports and friendships and it’ll grow from there as you follow the trail of their followers and reach other great writers through them and so on. It’s far nicer to have the regular contributors to exchange great banter with than have passing strangers saying “great post, thanks for sharing” never to be seen again. Then you know people really are interested in what you are blogging about.
Or maybe that is just my experience, no one chose to stick around
There are some posts on FP which make me think how did that happen? But maybe it’s to do with personal taste? Several of the same/similar subjects seem to come up though quite often.
Helpful to have your thoughts about what makes a post Freshly-Pressable. Of course, we’d all love to be FP’d and it’s a great way to find new blogs to follow. But I also agree with those who say you should focus on blogging about what you like (and hopefully what your readers like) and finding other blogs with which you have a rapport. Then being FP’d is the icing on the cake. Speaking of cakes, would double chocolate mousse cake do it for you? Gold bullion is in short supply here.
Double chocolate mousse, you say? Getting warmer…
Perhaps you haven’t noticed my absolutely brilliant blog – haha!
So, no poetry ever, then?
Off the top of my head, I can think of at least two poetry posts we’ve featured in the past few weeks. There’s room for everyone in the pool.
I was being a little ironic, of course
I am glad to learn some of the criteria used to determine how a post gets Freshly Pressed. I’ve been at this a little more than a year and having a great time. I’ve done a couple of posts about WordPress “buttons” I’d like to see and “This Was Freshly Pressed?” always gets the most comments. I have to admit I often cannot see merit in some of the choices.
I am infinitely delighted to see more posts about writing/blogging recently, or maybe I am imagining a shift?
I have no gold bullion. I do, however, have a cabinet full of chicken bullion. Will that work?
My blog is very dense, so the reminder to use pictures and headings is timely for me. Can you use “anchors” in blogs? For example, at the top you have topic titles (Directors Process, Directing in NYC, First Gig, etc) and then people click on that to get directly to that section? And thank you, thank you – I love Freshly Pressed. Though I will admit to being stymied by it’s power to suck me in and remove hours from my day!
Cat,
If you check out my page, you’ll see that my theme has two of those types of navigation bars. One links to my post categories (literature, libation, writing, etc.) the other links to my pages (beer fridge, home, me?). If you click on “Libation” for example, it will go to all of my beer reviews, as I have tagged them as such.
I think it is highly dependent on the theme you are using. I upgraded my WordPress to be able to edit my CSS and was able to tweak some things which helped tremendously. This is pretty technical, but if you’re confident you can get a crash course at: http://www.w3schools.com/css/
It looks like your pages display on the left navigation bar of your site. You might want to look for a theme that includes category navigation. Then you can just put each post in the correct category, and your readers can click a link to get all of the posts from that section.
Just a thought. Wrestling with themes and navigation is both fun and vexing. Feel free to send me a message if you’ve got specific questions.
Thank you very much for taking the time to reply, Oliver. I do have categories set up, but not an “in post” navigation. I’ll check out your blog and then message you with questions. Thanks again for taking the time to help a “newbie!”
Hey Oliver! I found what I needed – called “page jumps.” Check out this page to see how it works – would love to hear your feedback. http://wp.me/p2uyKs-5h
Peace
Cat
Great tips. The Freshly Pressed posts always inspire me.
I’ve been blogging for a few years now but then went into a drought…just started up again and am still trying to garner a substantial audience. I’d love to be FP’d but I relaize that it will take time. To those of you who are in the same boat as me…relax, your turn will come!!! This post was an extremely helpful article and hopefully we can all absorb their “criteria” within our blogs!!!
Happy Blogging!!!
Interesting post and I’ve enjoyed reading the comments! No idea if I will eventually be freshly pressed but in a way it might be quite alarming to go from being a little-known blogger to someone who is being bombarded by likes and comments. I would definitely like to be considered worth of FP status, though
‘worthy’ of, even… definitely time for a siesta.
Great suggestions! Would getting freshly pressed get me any CALORIES burned?
. I’m brand new here and limping along…but finding wonderful blogs for support in my long journey of getting healthier and stronger. My goal for coming to this blog world was just to try and possibly help others through my long journey. Who knew I would end benefiting, too? Thanks.
If you try to keep up with all the comments on your blog, you’ll probably burn a few hundred calories just from typing alone! Just keep at it. Persistence pays off.
Thank you, Oliver, for your humor and encouragement. Cardio from typing…i’ll see what my trainer thinks.
. Personally I love the idea!
Interesting…typing is a critical form or cardio for me as well. (It probably still doesn’t justify the all cookies, but that’s a personal problem. Damn you, delicious cookies!)
Never damn the cookies! The cookies give us writing super powers.
“who knew I would end UP benefiting, too?”……it is a REAL challenge typing on some devices…must figure out how to turn off auto correcting. It always corrects wrongly!
These really are great tips. Thank you for sharing some insight! Being Freshly Pressed is quite the achievement – one a lot of us hope to get. Being picked out of a very large crowd is not an easy feat.
I’d just add that being freshly-pressed is great, but it’s not the end of the world if it doesn’t happen! You can build a solid following simply by interacting with people who share your interests. I wrote a single post in March but then started writing more consistently since April and I’m just under 40,000 hits even though I’ve never been freshly pressed. I’m not sure how that figure compares to other people, but to me it seems enormous as the population of the town I live in is only 15,000
A big “yes” to this – being an active part of the community (linking to others, commenting, etc) is key to building an engaged readership that stays with you.
There are sooo many bloggers here, how do you even chose who to look at for consideration?
what u think about recycle plastics ?
So are you saying photo’s are manadatory? If not mandatory…it seems that you are REALLY in favor of using them.
Nope, just that we find they can often add to a post.
This is an interesting explanation but pure nonsense. There are a lot of very average blogs that make it to FP – if I see another recipe for chocholate fudge brownies I swear I will stop blogging!
There is no quality control – there are some great blogs out there and FP makes no distinction between excellent, good, average and bad. Some bloggers get FP’d after only a week or so! Some are just photo blogs, some are just recipes, some are just plain trash!Just be honest with us and tell us that it is a completely random exercise!
Andrew:
you are definitely on to something. if you’ve suffered (well, it wasn’t ALL suffering) thru’ the threads and strings so far, it seems that the bribery being suggested to the FP-deciders has a decidedly CHOCOLATE QUOTIENT.
(& (shhh!) — it’s gotta have a high RANDOMability factor — as there are thousands of us).

Well, aside from the fact that I don’t think you can ever have enough good brownie recipes, all I can say is that the quality control is human. And we all have standards, although they’ll of course vary from person to person.
We hope you’ll continue using these posts to give us feedback; it will only improve the overall quality of FP.
In the comments here, you linked to the support page Five Ways to Get Featured on Freshly Pressed.
The fifth point on that page is:
Is this no longer the case? I’ve seen so many typos lately in the posts that have been Freshly Pressed that my head hurts and I rarely take the time to check them out anymore. It makes me a little sad seeing poor grammar, punctuation and spelling being rewarded.
We definitely try to screen for spelling and grammar, although we will promote something with minor issues if we think the content is worth it; we also sometimes as bloggers to make corrections. Thanks for the reminder to screen more carefully.
so…at first, i was like gold bullion..like for soups? then i realized that’s bouillon. what about gold doubloons? will you accept those?
Your bullion/bouillon connection made my day. Thanks! =D
lil’city:
lookin’ at a recent copy of “Coins” magazine — have ya’ chect the value of DOUBLOONS recenty? i think the FP-decision people should be knocked over if you had one or more of those! (i’d suspect that ‘regular’ U.S. recent bullion issues should be sufficient?)
numismatically yours,
Rosco
betunada,
yarrrr be trippin! i’m a pirate, i make it rain doubloons.
x
littlecity
Thanks for the catch! And yes, doubloons are acceptable.
Most the posts you FP labeled humor….I find it hard to find the “funny”..
i’m funny!
(i am also SPARtACUS)
You have actually just answered a question that I pondered in a recent article for our own blog – http://wp.me/p2rM9I-5S
In it I asked whether the freshly pressed pages were decided upon/edited by real human beings or purely from the list of most visited sites. The reason I asked this question was because it appears that being freshly pressed can lead to an explosion in visitor traffic to your blog pages… and we all want that.
But if the pages we created purely from the top ranking blogs, then surely this extra traffic from freshly pressed would only result in listed blogs becoming even more cemented into those hallowed pages of ‘Freshly Pressed’.
Thanks for putting a human face to Freshly Pressed machine!
My Post: Dubai – New & Old http://markstraveljournal.wordpress.com/2012/08/07/dubai-new-old/ was “Freshly Pressed” on Aug. 9th. Thank you for noticing. It’s like having cult status.
This was a pleasant surprise on the FPd wall. I’ve lived vicariously through my sister’s blog, Pegoleg. I’ve found many talented bloggers who comment regularly on her posts. Eventually, I, too, joined in the conversations, which led to the creation of my own, little blog.
So far, her community has been very kind to my humble little trifles.
I agree with K8edid about the recent return to well crafted written posts being pressed. Always wondered how some selections were worthy, yet I know the WP audience is huge and the talent you review encompasses many categories.
How’s double-chocolate raspberry cake and a light, fruity white wine sound? (just between you and me … no one else will ever know:)
Why would I want more traffic on my blog?
It doesn’t make me live longer. If at all, it will take away valuable time because I’ll have to read more comments.
good point. “perhaps i’ll subscribe to your newsletter.”
This made me laugh…TY. Personally, I like the map lighting up from all the different countries more than the number of hits on my blog.
Yeah, I need to get out more.
It is great to get an incite as to how you all pick your “Freshly Pressed” posts! I have found several of my favorite blogs through them.
thank you for the great tips. i am new to this ‘blogging’ thing so i do wish one day i’ll be “freshly pressed” it would be like a dream come true. peace, and here’s my blog http://innamazing.wordpress.com/
