Weekly Photo Challenge: Growth

IMG_20120724_102439

Growth. These small (believe me, they were small) grapes in Napa Valley are getting ready for the harvest later this fall, when they will be turned into wine. Plants, animals, people, grow…but so can buildings, shadows, and waves. What can you share that makes the viewer think of growth?

Share a picture that means GROWTH to you!

New to The Daily Post? Whether you’re a beginner or a professional, you’re invited to get involved in our Weekly Photo Challenge to help you meet your blogging goals and give you another way to take part in Post a Day / Post a Week. Everyone is welcome to participate, even if your blog isn’t about photography.

Here’s how it works:

1. Each week, we’ll provide a theme for creative inspiration. You take photographs based on your interpretation of the theme, and post them on your blog anytime before the following Friday when the next photo theme will be announced.

2. To make it easy for others to check out your photos, title your blog post “Weekly Photo Challenge: (theme of the week)” and be sure to use the “postaday″ tag.

3. Subscribe to The Daily Post so that you don’t miss out on weekly challenge announcements. Sign up via the email subscription link in the sidebar or RSS

  12. My post for the “Weekly Photo Challenge: Growth” is this photo shot by my sister, Myraleigh C. Lambino, of a starfish in Tondol Beach, Pangasinan, Philippines, at http://marichulambino.wordpress.com/2012/08/05/weekly-photo-challenge-growth/ when she and her colleagues, a team of doctors and nurses based in Los Angeles under the auspices of the Philippine Minnesotan Medical Association, held a medical mission in Central Philippines where they performed 60 plastic surgery cases, 28 ENT surgeries and 28 OB-gyne surgeries, multiple minor surgeries and dental procedures and saw hundreds of patients, mostly indigents. I chose the photo of a starfish for the theme “Growth”, maybe because I was being literal: a starfish can grow or re-grow and regenerate an entire lost arm including bones, flesh, muscle, skin, while some species can re-grow the rest of their bodies from a single remaining arm . If you could re-grow and regenerate lost organs and body parts, you’ll never have to see a doctor or need medicine. It’s like entering the phase of immortality, except that the starfish has a lifespan of 10 to 34 years. But who wants to be immortal when the thrill is about finding as much meaning, and helping as many people, within the limited time you have? So… perhaps i wasn’t being literal…. And that’s the starfish.

    • Loved your comments and the tie to starfish regeneration. Terrific post.

If at first you don’t succeed try again. – When the new photo challenge came out I had no idea what I would do. It was by pure accident that I thought: trees, plants…growth? I had already made some images of trees and vegetation already for a test I was running on exposure and post processing. I also have a 7 month old daughter and was borne prematurely at 7.5 months. I’ve documented her growth ever since the first day and she has grown more everyday, but I did not want to post baby pictures in a traditional way. I processed the vegetation images for the challenge instead, but to me they turned out sort of dry and depressing. Then it occurred to me maybe I could combine the two ideas to have a double-sided story of what growth is to me. I made two different sets of images. One is with transparency and one without. I decided to go with the last one. These are the resulting images. Maybe they will set the spark to try something new in you. :)
