Make an argument for why weekends should be longer.
Different cultures expect a different amount of working hours from working people. Make a serious argument for why either you, or your entire society, should have more time away from work.

Besides the obvious disproportionate amount of stress-related heart disease that Americans encumber, hearken back to the last 3 day weekend you’ve had. Generally, Saturdays are busy activity days filled with all of the errands and minutiae you didn’t have time to do during the week which means that Saturday is essentially your OWN work day. That leaves you with one day of rest on Sunday, and by the time you start work on Monday, you were just starting to recuperate and are greeted with a cold shower. People really need two full days of rest to recharge. Mondays are usually the least productive days of the week anyway (rivalling Friday afternoons) because people aren’t fully rested. Most of our work days are busy work anyway, theater to look and seem powerful and important, evidenced by the numerous meetings people schedule to listen to themselves talk. In fact, the less time we are given for work or for a specific task, the more efficient we are. So we are sacrificing our own rest and spending more time at work, draining ourselves whilst being inefficient all for “show.” That’s asinine.
You’re right the last three day weekends have been amazing! So much more relaxing. Maybe they don’t even have to be every week, I’d be happy for one or two a month.

Simple. The average worker spends over 40 hours at work. Some doing things that they don’t necessarily like. Weekends are the only time people have for themselves. Some wash. Some clean. Some even attend church.
Time spent away from work can be really productive. Both for the individual and for the company (see my post on the issue: http://amorsthoughts.wordpress.com/2011/07/29/building-a-modern-office/).

Basically we all need more time to work on our our personal issues!

I would like to see shorter work week so that people can have a day to do necessary chores, a day for Church, if they so choose, and a day for family.
I think that the family is the backbone of any society. We are so busy. We neglect family time. As the family go, so goes our nation.
Because more off-time from work means less stress = more productivity and more satisfaction from work = loyalty to company.

we need to have long week end. two days is not enough to spend with your family and meet old friends. spending time with friends and reunions with old friends is effective in relieving stress. and time for our self. two days is not enough..
When I had a two day weekend, it was great. My weekend started as soon as I finished work on Friday. So I would have started unwinding. Saturday and Sunday were plenty of time to do things I wanted to do, including some errands at a leisurely pace and by the time Sunday evening came around again, I was prepping for Monday readily. Fresh and anticipating the week when Monday came about. But when I changed jobs to include half day Saturdays, it was not very good. For some reason I could not unwind when work let off. The crowds? Everybody else let out and out and about ? Manic? So my weekends felt pressed and I never fully let go. So when Monday started, I carried over the baggage from the week before and it was accumulative week after week. No fun at all. So yes, I went in Monday tired and unenthusiastic. Needless to say, I wasn’t at the job for overly long.
Just half a day extra but what a huge difference. I do not know if this experience carries over to be representative of a population.

This is very important for us to have effective performance in our duties during weekdays..
Even having shorter work days during the week would help. As a teacher, I worked about 60 hours a week, so the only down time I really had was on Friday night. 3-day weekends were heaven, because I could afford to spend a whole day or even more on activities I needed to do or wanted to do. This is why I don’t really want to teach anymore. I have too many things I want to do in my free time.
Americans work too much – it’s supposedly the “work ethic” – and there is not a societal value on leisure time. So our work days are too long, weekends and vacations too short. Not enough time for family as granny said. And although there are many unemployed people (like me) who need work, many companies are “saving money” (and increasing their own profits) by piling more work on the employees they still have. And in this economic climate, the worker goes along with it.
I heard on TV some Congressman say that the retirement age should be raised to 70! This idea is insane, and its advocates probably too young to understand what it’s like to look forward to not having to work anymore!

Weekends should be longer than the rest of the work days because it is a time where your friends and family are available for spending quality moments and it is also a time where you have to do a lot of chores. It is a time to nourish yourself, your relationships and your environment.

quite frankly.. i love traveling and i’m very interested in worldly affairs but too much school and work prevents me from taking many opportunities to travel and usually keeps me in solitude from the world. The only time I discover new things, e.g. SOPA, it’s because someone told me about it.. Some people have much more stress at home or with friends and the stress school adds on is phenomenal. Hard working people deserve more time to relax and just simply, stop.
There is one simple and competent explanation; RATIO. Our Rest to Work ratio is 2 to 5. And since you are living your life on a weekly basis from the age of 5 (elementary school) till the age of retirement (60′s), you basically live your life on a 2 to 5 RATIO basis….
This is an unacceptably skewed ratio to the side of the work. It would have been still more work, if our ratio was 3 to 4, but I could a least say it would be more of a life than a slavery….
